POTCO chat problems?

Well , I've been playing on my new account, trying to regain my once glorious title of sultan, but just today I was banned for a day on my new account for saying infidel, now I'm really confused, for every almost every Korsair has muttered the word infidel about five....thousand times. I read through Disney's chat rules 16 times trying to find out why the word infidel can get a pirate banned, but I found nothing.
So if anyone can point out and underline where it says that infidel is a mean/bad/hate/evil/pizza word, please tell me.

Anyway, this is what my 24hour suspension was for:

Dear barbarykorsair,

We are writing to inform you that inappropriate language has been found within a chat log attached to your account, shown below:

* 13:13:00 : And I promised Leon I would protect it from infidels

Due to the nature of the language, we have placed your account on a 24-hour hold. To regain access to your account after the 24 hours, please review and agree to our Terms of Use and House Rules here: http://www.disney.go.com/youraccount/

We wish to create a friendly online environment, so using language that could be deemed inappropriate on Disney's community of web sites is not permitted. Remember to keep it clean and keep it kind!

Please take this time to visit our netiquette page at: http://home.disney.go.com/guestservices/netiquette to learn more about online safety and manners. Understand that this 24-hour hold serves as a reminder to promote a safer, more pleasant online experience for all Guests. However, keep in mind that further violations of the Terms of Use may result in a longer account suspension or termination.

Thank you,

The Disney Online Team

Remember now.... Disney has that "new" chat system. If it finds it say goodbye to your account.
I don't think this is a good system.
Many people are being banned for rules not stated in the house of rules!!!:mybadki6:

Well the statement alone doesnt seem to warrant any such action however, if the statement were targeting other players in the game, it could easily be construed as an insult, in which case that IS in the rules as being against chat policies. One should not make the mistake of looking for their specific word in the rules, but the meaning/intent of the word, and how it was/can be used.

The root meaning of the word itself is a religious reference, which could also easily be construed as against POTCOs chat policies.

^Not to differ too much here, but that word is in top most common usage. Absolutely everyone has used it once in their life.
I called some NPC's that killed me crazy, you don't think that they'll ban me for that... Do you?
Because I just bought a membership. :(

Most words of profanity are used ten-fold beyond the top most words your likely referencing, and are against the chat policies.
Frequency of usage bears no relevance when it comes to chat guidlines/rules.
Meaning, intent, and purpose however have a great deal of relevance.

Chris Stormshot 10-11-2009 04:03 AM

Then why doesn't Disney actually read the chat logs?
There's no way a Disney person would think that was a bad saying if they actually read it... Right?
At any rate, I wasn't joking about the last part...
You don't think I'll be banned, do you? I hope not, I wanna be a part of the test server. :(

I have to agree, if they would actually READ the chat logs they may know what we were meaning, that's why sometimes you need to contact them and straighten things out.

Like the one time I got suspended, the filters had it all wrong (It was something about another game), and I contacted customer service and it was all cleared up, the 3 day ban turned into like a day and a half ban.

Well , this is the reason I brought this chat topic up, I know almost every Korsair has used the term, and I fear for them all getting banned, so I told them to lay off the word for a while. But even after googling what Infidel meant I just arrived with this,

But the way we used it as more for doubting or rejecting principle or system ect.
As is rejecting gravity or rejecting that donuts are good.

I did email Disney on this topic to try and find out why infidel was worth banning, and so I am waiting for some reply. I do find it strange that when typed, Infidels does not come up in italics or red, just as regular chat comes out, which is very deceiving. And I'm starting to think autoban is malfunctioning.

I'm sorry, but I am starting to think that might be the reason you got the other account banned.

Don't think so, they almost banned me before on the same account for just saying infidel, but I wonder why POTCO ban pirates for saying a word that they already approved with their chat. This is what they gave me a 10 hour ban for:

It was just me having some fun with friends and using the term infidel as we most commonly did.

You never learn, mate. If they banned you from saying that word why oh why would you say it again. Keep in mind that the word has been used in context that I think its best not to discuss.

I though the first time that Autoban was malfunctioning, and thought it would be repaired within the week, but I guess that it hasn't been fixed or explained, figuring that if infidel was worth banning from the beginning of the Korsairs, a good 9 council members would be banned, so it lead me to believe it was either Disney hating on Korsairs, a Malfunction of auto ban, a evil mod, or changed chat rules.

Perhaps D might be assosiating the word with Korsairs now if they noted any patern.I do agaree with Skirata on his last post. But for investigation.... Do you say it more than anyone else?Have any others on the Korsairs been banned or suspended for it?If your not careful they might notice its you again and ban, unlikely but possible.if the Korsairs need a reference outside the guild or something to help with the D issue I might be able to help in a non e mail way. though I understand use of the word as fun and not meaning any real harm of it in your case?

Achilles 10-12-2009 03:39 PM

very offensive word...

Ahoy toanuju22,

I think the problem here is two fold Mate, One, as TSC (Skirata) has clearly stated, “If they banned you from saying that word why oh why would you say it again”.
First, I think you are trying to simplify something here that is clearly a not simple or acceptable by the obvious looks of Disney’s response and by many other people as well.
If you ignored the first warning Mate, then what recourse do you have when trying to defend the second action of the same wrong doing?

Secondly, the root of the problem may lay here… the term “infidel” is basically viewed as a ethnic slur. A derogatory remark to another group or individual and in light of recent actions worldwide by a few militant individuals this term has world wide defamation associated with it. It may seem simple to you and simply fun, but to most of the world, there has been real life hurt and deaths by such misuse of the word and those using it. I have family members who are African American, there is a known slur word that starts with a “N” that is also racially and ethnically verbalized by wrong motives. Keep in mind Disney is the largest world wide entertainment business and employs many different people of races and backgrounds. These are the people who have world wide experiences too and probably have also seen and know the reality of the term and it's effect on others.

There is one program Disney has implemented for swearing that is not human specifically but that is new and this term “autoban” has been used long before that newly implemented program, but the fact is, there is a moderation team, real people that reviews all words, in every form of chat, nothing is overlooked and certain terms carry a flag with it.
We can all assume the term “infidel” is amongst them.

Having fought in the Persian Gulf war, I am all too familiar with the term and it’s use of such against many westerners. I am glad it is not allowed.

My hope for you Mate is that you can accept it, and just come back and play this game with a simple lesson learned. :)
