Thoroughly confused
I am a complete newbie to this game as of today. I was trying to follow the Player's Guide, but it has absolutely no relation to what I am experiencing on screen.
The guide talks about one set of character I am supposed to meet and talk to, and a certain strategy I am to follow. So far, I haven't seen much tutoring. I'm still trying to figure out how to effectively use my sword. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
ok glad to see you in game to use weapons in general press ctrl or right click but for specific issues i recomend checking the wiki can someone get this guy a link to the wiki

I am not sure about the online players guide for the game itself not having used it much as a reference, I do know that our Wiki's information is out of date in some areas, as we struggle to keep up with POTCOs updates. But the start of the Story Quest tree, including the tutorial portion of the game there is accurate: DOW Wiki - POTCO
Regarding using the Cutlass. Make use of combo moves as they become available for your most effective fighting. To obtain more combos you assign skill points that you earn with each level to them as they become unlocked, press K for access to skill point assignments, etc. You will have more combo moves available as you continue to level up on your Cutlass. Time your cutlass attacks so it uses the combos, instead of a button mash approach that simply uses the basic skill. It gives you more attacks compared to each of the enemies attacks against you. Please feel free to ask questions, lots of helpful pirates about. |

In your Treasure Chest - there is a Book which records your quest and the next items you need to do. When you click on an item, you can select it to follow by using the Button at the top of your Journal to mark it. This in almost all cases shows you a "beam of light" to where to go next (and if just beginning even gives you an arrow on the ground to "follow" - though you may run around a bit because it works like a compass and not a direct path). Since the start of the quest is mostly on Port Royal, until you meet with Elizabeth at the Mansion and she gives you your first boat for free (you have to see Darby Drydock at the woterfront to pick it up) - don;t worry about sailing. Once you get the boat, then your off... head for tortuga (it already in front of you - just sail across and go past Devils Anvil) then follow your quest journal to visit Gibbs and Sparrow in the Tavern there. As another note - you can see the Map in your chest when your sailing - and it also will have the start marker to at least direct you to the next island you need to go (should you be told to see someone else on another island) After you get going - you'll be ok :) Take time to level your sword on the weak soliders at Port Royal before heading out too far (you may even be told to get your pistol at Devils Anvil before having to sail to Tortuga and talk to Sparrow and Gibbs - so stop there an your way since that island is invetween Port Royal and Tortuga). Finally - as mentionsed the POTCO Wiki has lots of good info and the Main Quest and the Side Quests listed - just follow along :) Good luck. :D |

Hi Moby Duck! Welcome to the POTCO world and the best POTCO forum ever, Pirates Online Forums.
A suggestion - when you log into the game, hit F7 and choose the "Interface" tab on your left. Make sure that all of your check boxes (Disable basic game hints, Disable intermediate game hints, Disable advanced game hints) are UNCHECKED. This will help give you hints as you move through the game. They should already be unchecked, it sounds like they are already anyway, but just in case you're in a game glitch, this will help. Also, if a Non-Player-Character (NPC) (a green dot on your compass) gives you a quest, there will be a ray of white light to lead you where you need to go. Left-clicking on your mouse fires/activates the current weapon you are holding. You can change your weapons by using your F keys: F1 is cutlass, F2 is pistol, F3 is voodoo doll, F4 is dagger, F5 is grenades and F6 is voodoo staff. You can also change your weapons by scrolling your mouse wheel. You don't have most of these weapons yet, but you can use it as a reference as you progress through the game later. Enemies are easily identified as red dots on your compass in the upper right corner of your game screen. Their danger to you can be determined by the color of the name above their heads as you look at them in the game...Greys are pushovers, Greens are easy, Yellow are harder and Red are extremely difficult. You can click and drag your right mouse button to swing your view around in the game (this is known as your camera...you can use this on land as well as at sea on your ship to change the angle of what you see on the screen). There are many helpful, giving people on this forum. Please feel free to ask questions here and you will have members giving you advice as soon as they are available. Also, on the home page of this site is the Wiki. It is a marvelous resource. Look to the list on the left side of the home page that says "Our Wiki Guide". Yes, it's a bit behind, but for your purposes right now, it's a priceless resource. There are threads devoted to Quests to help you along here also. So, ahoy matey, and may fair winds follow you! |
