Star Trek (2009)

~Hailing all Star Trek fans...~ :dancetl6:

So I just saw the new Star Trek movie today and I must say.. IT WAS AMAZING!! There were some little things that I didn't like (mainly minor differences from the original series) But overall it was great! I have been watching Star Trek since since I was a kid and have always loved the concept of exploring the universe. I guess that's why I got so into it. So I figured I would make this thread for all those fell Star Trek fan's out there so we can discuss the new movie :)

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD.. YE BE WARNED**
Spoiler for Star Trek (2009):
Now I'm not giving anything away but for those who have seen it you will know what I'm talking about. The way they decided to go about the movie gives them a lot of options. Since the future is now changed.. they could either continue the movies or even continue the series if they wanted. So what do you think they are going to do?
What did you like about it? Dislike? Who was your favorite character etc. :D

I havent had a chance to see it yet, but now I am very concerned.

I have been a Star Trek fan since I was youngin (since the 70s)

The idea of changing something that the series/movies has made it a big point to adhere to (ie the timeline) is quite distressing.

Sure it brings up new options... but it also unvalidates the entire Star Trek franchise already in place which made it what it is today.

Im sure the movie is great, but if they changed the timeline... IMO they screwed up.

**SPOILER AHEAD**
Spoiler for Star Trek (2009):
What they do is make a time warp. Since the movie takes place before Captain Kirk becomes Captain, they change it up a bit. He still becomes Captain, but what they basically say is that everything that had been their future is now changed because of this time warp. So the whole Original Series, technically doesn't exist. I agree with you though, its like undoing everything we have seen. All the same, I am interested to see where they go from here. I do think it would be nice if they come out with either another movie or another series..

Ever been to visit "The Star Trek Experience" in Las Vegas?

It is very cool, and one of the coolest things is the timeline presentation of the entire museum.

Tear it down, its obsolete.... what a waste. <sigh>

Dissapointed, but who knows, maybe they'll make a sequel that sets everything right again.

Not really - because, in essence, they could have the same thing happen repeatedly and invent different POSSIBILITIES of what could happen. I mean, as per butterfly effect, any one thing can change everything. Right?

I mean, someone could basically come back and change things back to normal, yet again... LOL Over and over, indefinitely. (Anyone see that Family Guy episode where Peter keeps needing do-overs?? LOL Thats my point!)

Seems like an interesting concept - I keep hearing wonderful things about it.

All I'm going to say is that I enjoyed the movie a lot. You can't really give any comments without spoiling the whole story. It was good and it's worth seeing.

I think you just made this thread to brag that you know how to make spoilers. That being said, the movie looks interesting, or so I gauge from the Burger King toys.

Juliana Maria 05-27-2009 06:12 PM

Actually I didn't know how to make the spoiler tag until one of the mods edited my post.... Learn something new everyday!

Dr. Zeppers 05-28-2009 02:25 AM

Got free movie tickets here, and still cant get a chance to go...

Hey Zeps, what state do you live in? I'll fly there.

Anyway, how would this movie appeal to one who doesn't like Star Trek?

Well, appealing to one who doesnt like Star Trek, IDK. But I love both Star Trek and Star Wars.

As for the timeline change, I dont see it as a problem. If I remember correctly from all the different series they had of Star Trek, this is something that fits in. Yes, it does throw a BIG kink in the orginal time line from the original series, but Spock did tell Jim that he had to regain the captainship of the Enterprise. That was the only way Jim could correct the mistakes caused by Nero. I know there are a couple things, what hapened to the Vulcan planet and to Jim's dad, that couldnt be corrected. However, in order to get the time line back on course with what the orginal was, or close to it, Jim had to become captain of the Enterprise.

So a few things will be different now, ie Uhura and Spock instead of Uhura and Jim, but that doesnt change the captain or crew of the Enterprise. And that is the important part of Star Trek. They did keep the little quarks between the characters relationships in the movie. The most obvious is between Jim and Bones. I was rolling when Bones was constantly giving Jim shots!

I do hope they make another movie with the same cast. I think the casting director did an excellent job filling the roles of all the main characters. It really amazed me how much they looked like the original cast members. ie Spock and Bones.

Everything was perfect to me. Action, special fx, acting, directing. And because of those things, I would bet that a person who was not a fan of previous Star Treck would very much enjoy this movie. Personally I never liked Deep Space 9. The point of Star Trek was "to boldly go where no one has gone before," and all they did on that show was sit around on a space station.

Anyway, I do suggest that everyone see it. Enjoy the new Star Trek!
