Is there such a thing as a GM glitch?
A friend of mine, and guildmaster, was threatened by another member who was upset that she reported him. He told her tonight that he, "Knew how to do the GM glitch" and that he would get into her guild, become GM and delete her guild.
For now she has reported him (again), stopped recruiting, and is making no new officers, but my question is, does this glitch exist? I had read about it happening once, but I thought it was accidental. Can it be done on purpose? Any info and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
To my limited knowledge, there is no such thing. However, the reported cases of "inside deleting" ( thats how I call it), as occurred by "bad" officers that were mad with their GM. The best advice is this demote everyone until everything can be considered safe and promote those that are in the highest of trust, delete such member from the guild and friend lists, and talk to your members about such topics just to warn them of the situation with such member. That is how I would handle such things. That is the best advice that I can give you. Good luck with you guild.

Thank you :) Luckily her officers at the moment are people she has known a long time, so she's not worried about them. Her main worry is new recruits being able to suddenly make themselves guildmaster.
Sounds like a bluff to me, but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone knew anything ;) |
I think it was all smack talk.....however I've seen strange things occur with GM's disappearing and they swear they didn't leave the guild. So.....I wouldn't worry about it.

The GM glitch is rare, but can still happen. If you recruit a member then sometimes they'll accidentally become GM. Happened to me once when I made a guild turns out they just left. At the moment though the GM glitch can not be done on purpose only on accident. Most likely the glitch will occur on laggy days, but the kid who says he knows how to do the glitch is lying, but if he's going to threaten your guild even with a glitch that not even he knows if it will work should not be recruited into your guild.

Simple enough to do but not very useful. You run into this glitch if someone invites you to their guild, you make your own, and accept their invitation. Now nobody will hear you in guild chat if done correctly. It just, well says it. To invite them as an officer have them leave their guild, press guild options, show members, and guild them again. But no, there is no possible way for another pirate to become a GM and delete a guild.

I haven't heard of any way to do this outright either. I think its more a scare tactic threat than actually possible.

Trust me, if there were a glitch like that. It would be posted all over the internet in 2 seconds flat. I wouldn't believe it at all and just report him. If she is worried about new recruits, she could just have a limit of officers (those that she trusts), and not even talk about officers unless a guild member asks. I hope everything turns/turned out well for you and your friend.

Aye, it's happened to me once, and it is strange. I know we didn't recruit the person, but they were in there.

I've contacted Disney about this glitch a while back. It's a server side glitch and not something that another user can hack. If they do manage to become a Guildmaster in a guild that already has a Guildmaster, they will NOT recieve any of the same rights that only the original GM are privy to. In other words, yes, they will have the title "Guildmaster" under their Pirate name, but they cannot demote/promote Officers, they cannot remove the first GM, and therefore cannot delete the guild. I am unsure as to whether or not they have the power to regular members. If knowledge of that comes to my attention, I will be sure to let you know.

Thank you, that's good to know :)
We've pretty much decided this guy was bluffing about the gm glitch, though he was the same person who was threatening to (and apparently did) hit several other guilds. He has used being made an officer on at least 2 other guilds I know personally to delete members. We've reported him, but he just keeps making new accounts. And apparently we are still on his hit list as well. |
Just use unlimited invite codes to give to members so they can reinstate themselves. I've tried much more than that on the idea.

Quote:
a) Allow for multiple GM's or transfer of GM if a player is leaving b) Allow for multiple levels of status - Officer just isn't enough c) Allow for "Setting Options" for higher ranked players by GMs like "Allow Guilding", "Allow Ejection" - so if GMs feel there is someone amongst them who may be causing an issue they can just remove their Eject Status Rackat and I (Rackat - it was us at one time wasn't it? :D ) actually made a detailed post on this, but nothing close to seeing in in game as of yet... |
Max, I remember that thread, but can't recall where it was.
Ok, Item A) I don't believe for a minute that there is a glitch wereby someone can become a GM of an existing guild. According to Disney, even they cannot transfer the GM title to a new player. This is one reason why there are so many 'dead' guilds. The GM quits, and the group can't promote any new officers. Item B) A GM has to be careful about promotions to officer. It is her/his guild to take care of, and he/she must be conscientious enough to make sure that the promotions are to trusted and deserving people. Item C) Should someone unscupulous become an officer and boot everyone out of the guild, they can't boot the GM! An officer cannot demote the GM, nor boot them from the guild. A good guild can recover! If all the members were booted, they just have to put the word out via friends list and whisper, and they can all be reguilded. The guild may end up smaller, because unplayed, or dead, pirates won't rejoin, but the core of the guild will still exist. The GM started the guild all by him/herself and can rebuild it. If your guild has a private website, or posts here on POF, they can all be notified and brought back in short order. Is it inconvenient? Heck YES! Is it non-recoverable? Heck NO! |
Make all members officers, wouldn't that work?
