How to Share/Link POTCO Accounts - MACs

With the June 2nd 2009 updates, players can no longer tab between linked accounts.

To play multiple pirates on one MAC-

1. Follow the steps In The Setup Multiple Accounts For PCs (Click Here)to set up a linked Basic (free) account on Disney's piratesonline.com

2. Open the Pirates Online application. For this guide I will assume you have the Pirates Online launcher in your dock. Sign in using your Unlimited account's ID and password.

3. You will need to quit the Pirates Online launcher application, and this process is a bit different on a Mac than it is on a PC. You can do this in one of several ways.
** Right click on the launcher icon in your dock and select "Quit" **
** Press Command+Option(alt)+Esc and force quit the launcher **
** Click on the launcher icon in the dock, and simply X it out **

Now, you must restart the launcher. This, again, is a bit different than doing so on a PC. If you try to restart it by simply clicking on the launcher icon in the dock, you will notice that.... nothing happens. The steps to restart the launcher are as follows-

-Open your Finder.
-Select Applications
-Right click on Pirates Online, and select "Show Package Contents"

-Expand "Contents" and then expand "MacOS"
-Scroll down until you see the "Launcher"

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...icture1-13.png

-Double click to open it up, you should get a window that says "Terminal - Launcher" and the little Pirates Online launcher box.
-You will need to click in that little box to actually get the launcher to start loading
-Log in using the account ID and password of your linked (Basic) account

Now you should be set to play both pirates. When the pirate-select screen loads, you should be safe to exit the finder and the "Terminal - Launcher" window, as well as the Terminal icon on your dock (YELLOW below).

In order to access your Unlimited pirates from the linked Basic account, click the arrow in the top left corner, RED below.

On my Mac, using both pirates rarely causes me to lag. However, if I go to a busy server of if I SvS, I usually log out or minimize one pirate.

If you plan to use this a lot, there is a quicker way to play two pirates. As you can see on my dock and in my applications folder in the screenshots above, I have three Pirates Online launchers. One is for TEST, but two are for open. To do this, I put my first launcher in the trash and downloaded the game again. I then got the game out of the trash and put both launchers in my dock, and they open as different, separate programs. This (I think) is the only way to get two launchers in your dock, because you can't put the Terminal - Launcher from the Pirates Online Package Contents in the dock. (Well, you can, but it won't work unless you open it directly from the applications... weird...) I tried to do this (trash game, download again, get two launchers) on my PC and it didn't work at all.

LadyDi. One of our esteemed test members here checked with Live Chat support about this subject and said this about her conversation (i bolded the relevant part):

"I was on live chat about this issue. What little she could tell me is this isn't planned to go to the live server. The linked accounts on test we stopped in order to stop the abuse of those that weren't invited from accessing test through friends accounts."

So it does not appear that it will be moved to Open.

Thanks Zep (and LadyDi) - that's good to hear.

wmah 06-03-2009 01:16 AM

It looks like it has been moved to open. In the house right now I can't get a linked account to be able to use the paid account. I think they need to fix this issue. I don't like the way it is right now as it takes away the fun.

I think what Zep quoted above sounds like a made up reason to me. I'd bet it is an idea to get more than one paid account out of a household.

Dr. Zeppers 06-03-2009 01:20 AM

Yeah, its big news now... everyone is complaining.

I encourage everyone to send in their complaints on this linked account change.

Disney's reasons sound like a total snow job that in reality equates to $'s

You are totally and completely right - it is a money scheme.

As a linked account user, you realize just how important they are. PLEASE, bombard them with negative feedback! This update HAS to be reversed. With enough pressure, maybe, just maybe, they will see how irrational disabling linked accounts really is.

Again, please, PLEASE tell Disney we wanted our linked accounts back!

Sven Osymthe 06-03-2009 01:26 AM

Hmmm... perhaps someone should email this, and the other thread to Disney. Show them just how much it "doesn't effect" us :D

wmah 06-03-2009 01:28 AM

Just saw this on pirates online, It all sounds to me like a way to get more money out of us.

Thanks for your feedback regarding the change made to Linked Accounts. We understand your concerns and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, we'd like to take a moment to address your questions and comments:

Q: The Linked Accounts feature was implemented from the beginning, and used by a large number of subscribers and families, why remove it?

A: We removed the feature because it was being exploited more often than it was being used for its intended purpose. Players were using it to work around suspensions and holds after these players were removed from the game. In addition, many players were allowing other players to access their account with the feature too - In both cases, this compromised game security on several levels. Please know before we implemented the change we collected data on exactly how many people would be affected by it, in reality this change affects an extremely small number of our players.

Q: With this update, you have effectively made my character (that I have spent many hours to level and master) totally inaccessible.

A: If the character you're trying to access is yours, you should have the account information to access it. If you don't remember your account information, please use our Account Services to recover your Member Name and Password. Can?t remember your password or account information, then use the links below for help:

Forgot Your Account ID?

Need to Change Your Password?

Q: Is this so Disney can make more money on subscriptions?

A: We did this strictly to address security concerns. We?ve removed the ability for you to tab between linked accounts, not to link them, so families can still have multiple accounts and pay for those accounts through one primary account.

For the few families that actually used the feature to play with other members of their family at the same time using the same account, again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We're working on a solution that will directly address your concerns, until then, please access the account you want to play directly by using your account information.

Thanks for all your great feedback. We know any change takes some getting used to, but feel the change will not only improve account security but help make the game better as well by making players more responsible for the actions of their own accounts. Keep those comments coming!

Thats the way it seems to us all, since it pretty much is the case. What they don't realize though, they aren't making money, but rather losing money off of this move.

wmah 06-03-2009 04:27 AM

I was thinking of another possible solution.
Set up the system so that anyone logging in with a linked account and restrict it so that the only way they can get into the paid account is they have to be on the same IP address. If not then only the person logged in to the paid account would be able to play.

Unfortunately, not all households share one ip address for each user.
It is quite common for isps to assign different ips per user in a household (its a way they charge more...)

Plus if im on a business trip, I still want to be able to play with my family when im not doing business. ;)
