Release Notes - January 13, 2009
  • New and improved Port Royal: Players should see significant performance increases thanks to the new layout.
  • New and improved Tutorial: Now more action packed!
  • Added a player Profile Card so you can view details about players you meet.
  • Changed the default graphics API from OpenGL to DirectX 9
  • Early Quest Line has been smoothed out and should be much more fun.
  • Overall smoother gameplay: Fewer hiccups and pauses during the action.
  • Improved crew making and display: Starting and joining crews is easier than ever before.The onscreen crew display is now even more useful.
  • Improved Chat interface: Only one text entry box now and it routes your message appropriately.
  • Clothing Store changes: It's much easier to browse through all your wardrobe choices.
  • Fixed another exploit that allowed you to leave a PvP while still undead.
  • Reputation gains are no longer reduced for Basic Access players.
  • Lots of other small tweaks and improvements!
Test Known Issues - January 13, 2009
  • If you have issues launching the game, please try changing the graphics API back to OpenGLvia the "Graphics Options" button on the Launcher.

Player interface is cool. It's going to take some getting used to, but the options here are awesome. You can friend, guild, report, tp, and open a side bar to check their weapons stats (thought I got a pic of that but it didn't go thru, ty Grace for being my guinea pig ;) )

So, what are the changes to crew? Do you just automatically become crewmates with other pirates that are nearby on compass, now?

And what are the chat changes? Just that it puts (g)/(c) before instead of in the middle?

New Tutorial
 
Looked at all the new feautres, liked them all (including the new way to pick how your friends are sorted on your friends list, they didn't mention that.) But mainly focused on this, new "action-packed tutorial".

Changes to the Tutorial:
  • Rambleshack
    • Rambleshack now hosts Will Turner's Warehouse instead of the bar, so no more getting slapped.
    • On the path to Bo Beck's ship, there are now 2 undead gravediggers to fight. (Will has given you your sword.)
    • Instead of shooting at a sunken ship, you're now fighting a weakened level 17 French Shadow Crow. (Yes, it fires back at ya' mate.)
  • Cutscenes
    • In the final cutscene between Will Turner and you, two of Jolly Roger's minions now spawn behind him to "come after him" instead of the angry mob you used to hear.
    • All cutscenes now have a transparent notice in the top left corner saying "Press ESC to skip."
  • General Tutorial Help
    • Will Turner now shows you how to assign skill points and makes you put 1 skill point into sweep, and then makes you use it on the dummies.
    • The optional compass tutorial now uses a large compass, an undead, and a townsfolk to explain how the compass works.
    • When you shoot Jack the Monkey, a little notice under his health bar gives a message from Barbossa about taking a fine shot.

Other interesting things I have noticed.
  • New music on islands including Tortuga, Devil's Anvil, Port Royal, Ile d'Etable de Porc, and Isla de la Avaricia. (I am guessing all islands have new music, considering this pattern.)
  • Friends List can now be sorted by player name or their online status.
  • Privateering is now listed in the lookout section.
  • Chat has been refined.
    • There are now two buttons, one leads to the emotions list and another to the speedchat. Clicking the arrow takes you to chat.
    • All text said is now white, in all chat channels.
    • Names are now color coded.
      • In Local chat, names show up in Orange.
        Example: Jack Ironmalley:Testing
      • Crew chat unknown at this time
      • In Guild chat, names now show up in the same light blue as before, and now start with [Guild].
        Example: [Guild] Jack Ironmalley:Testing
      • Privateering chat names also show up in orange, with either [Spanish] or [French] as the prefix.
        Example: [Spanish] Jack Ironmalley:Testing (or) [French] Jack Ironmalley:Testing
    • If a user logs in or out, it shows up with a - before it and in orange text.
      Example: - Jack Ironmalley has gone offline.
    • All accomplishments are now in lime green with a - before them.
      Example: - Level Up! Notoriety Level 2

U can boot ppl from ur ship too, but I don't think it is necessarily "Walk the Plank" style LOL, even tho it would be awesome if it was "Walk the Plank" style. And the Player Profile card you can see what level weapons & skills they have, but u can't see where they put their skill points though (unless its a bug thats preventing you to see where skill points are placed).

More content to reach higher levels than 40. Geez, how hard can it really be? Python isn't exactly formidable code so I have to believe the fault lies with the "Imagineers" as Disney calls its creative engineering team. If this game were made in China we would already be up to level 60! Of course it would be in Chinese so it would be a lot more difficult for many of us to play.... jk

I really am excited about all of these. They look awesome, and some of the updates will make the game easier/smoother to play. Not to mention that these are proof that the dev's have not forgotten the game altogether.

But, as one of my guildies said, these changes are almost exclusively geared towards new players. There is still little/nothing in this for those who have been around long enough to get one (or many) pirates up to level 40, and are getting bored.

So, while I'm hopeful, I'm still not completely impressed.

About getting booted off a ship: is that person KEPT off, or do they have to be booted repeatedly? Do they go to jail, or port of call?

Just had a quick look about the town - its much different than the current one...

No long beach anymore, and no long run to the fort
The fort is now a seperate 'world' via entering a master Gate (much like KH is) - guessing that is how they intend to resolve some lag issues (reducing sightlines)
Everything is 'compact' and closer overall - once again their progress to resolve lag by reducing sightlines.

Its nifty... not sure if it was needed - and better time would of been spent building the new storyline than a 'Port Royal Redo' - but as Edward mentions maybe its in prep for a new storyline... one can only hope...

They do. When you open the launcher up there's a button at the bottom between Release Notes and help that says "Graphics Options". Clicking that gives you the option of OpenGL, DirectX 8, or DirectX 9. Whichever one you pick stays that way until you select a different one. ^^

Yes, lots of neat stuff. Guessing they changed the map of port royal to put less activity in same general areas to cut down some of the lag.

It is quite a maze now, going to take awhile to master its layout.

Unfortunately the update messed up my pirates Journal. :(
Of all things to mess up, it removed the story quest!

Now THAT'S a nice addition! Too bad that one alone isn't on live/open, yet. Be nice if they had a "test graphics engine" thing to confirm that the new settings work for an individual graphics card/computer (or do they? If you switch it, does it have a "testing" thing?)

I guess the tech-support guys at live-chat should add that in, as their first-line of questioning. That's a great change that should help lots of people be able to play.

Things probably going to be awhile before they make open, lots of stuff not right..

Missing signs (or they are buried in columns).

Oh, and "June" is completely missing!!!! Hope you dont need her for your story quest!

Things that can be expected though.. they'll get it right before it hits open (I surely hope).

Noticed that when you "Port" at Port Royal, you are placed on the main dock. You have to run through the maze of a town to get to the shipwright to repair, although you can relaunch from the shipwright. Seems like alot of this is going to slow people down a bit.

A few graphics issues were fixed but in the process it made places harder to get to.
I believe pirates has been working on this for a while now. It seems like a waste when you see how it will slow down players for quests.

I don't know about that. Those things (e.g. the Kraken) have been in the phase files forever, from what I understand. The island BILGEWATER is where you do "Create-a-Pirate" get out of jail, get your sea chest, get your journal, get slapped and find Bo Beck. A long time ago, it used to let you open the MAP while you were on there. The Level 25 weapons look very nice, however...

That was my fault. I think it's 25. 25 or 30. But these dark art weapons look pretty good. They'll probably do 12+ damage or 10+.

The kraken has a LOT of aniamtion.
The DOOM tentacle finishes the players ship off.(it's about five times as big as the other tentacles)
There's a few grabber and holder tentacles.(which pick players up, oh no!)

There's also the head. It is a head in testing. Right now it's texture is rocks.
I think it's only being used for animation.

My guess is that the second story quest will be released, at the very latest, during the last month of summer.
This is just a guess.

The only thing I'm sure about is taht the kraken is almost done and the dark art weapons are coming.(another set of weapons. probably coming after the second boss battle)

There's no texture for the enterance of the graveyard yet.
There's a few bugs but hardly any lag now.

Anytime you change the graphics level there will be a graphics issue but that's because it takes a while to load.
There's also no where to change the size of your screen, change special effects, etc...
I think these bugs can and will be fixed within the next three weeks.

I guess I popped back on yesterday a day to early, after a few weeks.

So looked at stuff for a hour or so today. Port Royal has had a full make over.

So far I saw some good things some bad.

Clicking a persons name out of chat window to bring them up I immediately thought of all the spammers hiding in a wall and spamming their name over and over, haha.

As for a quick view of some things I reported.
Tattoo's and jewelry "my items" not showing up.
In guild options refreshing the list with showing members locked the game.
Port Royal has now one ammo shop (grenades quest) no longer a convenient ammo shop when you dock. Hopefully will be fixed with the empty room of one of three doors by the dock.

40's now have something to do. The pic Sara put up, you can see the code button under clothing. So we now can hit that code button and put in random numbers over and over, and see if we can get something, lol.
(actually didn't look to close to that maybe that is for the color)

Lag better, maybe. Did get a couple stops, but over all seemed better. Going into Quarry on Padres, I use to lag bad from the start with the bat, that area seemed better.

Chat no longer has the + sign. Typos turn red in the sentence you are typing, but still go through. Sentences cut after like ten words and automatically sends, and cuts to send rest in a second sentence. At least in guild chat, not liking that much cutting part of the sentence off or word off you are typing. At least better than typing things over and over to get it to finally go through.

A quick run through on all the new material only saw a couple wall glitches.

And yes. ... we will have to start using our tracking beams just to find our way around Port Royal.. has anyone been able to locate June with a beam?

I did a run through the back areas last night - and they all look the same to me (though all the entries are in different locations now)... only PR itself has had the 'Extereme Town Makover" by Ty and his disign team :D

First time I have seen this thread I guess these are mainly info and screen shots of the test server?

Can anyone with access to the test server that knows how to perform the undead skellie glitch for unlimited ammo actually try it to confirm that Disney has finally fixed at least that particular glitch once and for all?

Glad to hear they are still working on the kraken and that it is being tested on the test server. Also never knew they where using open GL still for POTC and always assumed they where using Direct X

Why on earth would POTC be not using Direct X 9 from the start is beyond me.

No wonder people with newer video cards have not been getting the most out of this game.

POTC should be running Direct X 9.0C and contain an update in the launcher for people using older versions.

Just wanted to note, that the Kraken is not on the test server. The only information about the Kraken at this time is that MacIronhawk found the animations and the part of the textures for it in the phase files.

The kraken isn't on the test server yet.
It's really close to being done but just because the kraken's close doesn't mean the story quest for it is. But I'm pretty sure the second story quest is fighting the kraken.
P.S. The third story quest will probably be fighting davy jones and his ship.

There's barely any animation for jolly roger other than the sences in the tutorial. The third and fourth story quests are a while away.

Maybe they like having customers? The lower the hardware requirements, the more people can pay (and play.)

Sounds like something's wrong with your DirectX9 driver. Have you tried using the "Graphic Option" button on the launch panel to change the graphics mode back to OpenGL?

Do you have an old voodoo graphics card? Think they were 3DFX they were bought out by Nvidia years ago but those cards where only open GL if that helps.

Think they were from 1996 to 2000 I am guessing and in computer years that is decades ago at least. (computer years being much longer then dog years) 1 year for a computer is roughly 15 human years in comparison

A 6 year old PC is more then old enough to retire.

Now a Mystery is Solved....

I know why they did a Port Royal makeover. It's my fault. Not long ago... I glitched my burning ship into Port Royal with... yes, I confess... and intense urge to burn down June's house.

Which explains her temporary housing situations as of late.

But not to worry.. and I"m sure someone already beat me to the post.. June has been given a beach front apartment. She now lives in the building right along the beach.. First door on the left.

*evil grin..at least next time I glitch to burn her place.. I won't have to destroy the whole town.

I got two additional screenshots to show how the tutorial looks..

First .. no screenshot.. but in the jail..when Jack starts his speech you can hit escape.

You leave the jail and go up to Rambleshack as directed..they call it a warehouse now... Will Turner is in there..

When on Bo Beck's ship.. you no longer shoot 2 or 3 shots at a sunken ship.. you shoot at a sailing moving skeleton ship.. lol.. it's a blur.. I think you sink it .. then Jolly Rover yells SSPPAARRRROWWW!!

Yeah, found her last night.

She wasnt there originally, that was an empty room, similar to the empty room that PR on open has near the shipwright when the updates first hit test.

Well this isn't big, but it looks like they might've snuck in a maintenance/update overnight and didn't tell us, cause the Graveyard entrance is now appropriately textured.

Yes, they fixed a number of things, journal is now fixed, shop signs are fixed, where they remembered to put them in, it appears they forgot a few. They are fine tuning it without letting us know.. but they definately did slip an update in somewhere on us.

this is awesome ive already seen it first hand! but they really need to UP THE CAPS AND NOTORIETY! ive got so much friends quitting because of no story quest and notoriety caps its really sad!

Many have vented their frustrations over the past year (including myself). However, we do need to keep in mind...this game is only 1 year and 3 months old. In my opinion still in its infancy. You cannot compare POTC Online to WOW or EQ as they have been around for years. For content and price, I don't think we can complain. What is it $79.00 for an entire year? You can spend that on 1 XBOX 360 game and lunch.

I truly believe we will see many changes in 2009 and I will continue to support both the game and the POTC forum as much as possible. I’m Robert Darkskull the pirate, and I approve this message!

I agree. Now as relating to the DX9 thing, I think I did switch regular POTCO to that thing because of a thread I spotted on here. Still, I'll try it out.

I would have to disagree with the point of content and price that we shouldn't complain. I don't believe its my solo voice, or others, the issue and how much they pay each. I do think it is the 1000's of people not paying the $79 a year no longer that matters. If people are refusing to pay any longer, than someone better say or attempt to do something about it. This is where it leaves the complaint department and becomes a serious issue.

I don't believe it to do with any other game whatsoever in comparison, but a fact people are leaving. So, if you would like to see every friend you have made in the game leave, feel free to never complain. As for me, I will push to keep people in the game. This is going to require complaints to give people things in the game to remain playing and enjoying it. The more complaints for the same thing by everyone, the better chance for it to maybe sink in.

Now back to this thread, I did get a download, but didn't see a lot of changes.
June was changed to the open shop, which I was hoping for a ammo shop there. Still no tattoo or jewelry my items. Signs still missing. One shop exits into a wall glitch. Some still with black out furniture. Seeing graphic issues now, and am going to have to test the different settings in this area.

Many found the setting in the game options file of Directx10 to be helpful (particularly Vista users I believe). I wonder if this is still possible with the new interface/configuration option.

I understand your view on many paying users leaving the game. However, user retention is something all games face for various reasons. As I stated, most of us (MYSELF INCLUDED) have complained and it appears some things are beginning to change. I can't even begin to place a number on the calls/emails Disney received that were voicing complaints. A major expansion is definitely something needed...no doubt. I have lost friends and guild members...some switched to basic access and others called it quits.

I'm trying to remain positive here and contribute in anyway possible to enhance the game play and keep everyone involved. Tossing in the towel is not my style. I'm certain Disney has a huge finance/accounting department providing statistics on profitability on a regular basis. They know how many long time users they have lost and how many new members they have gained. The intelligent thing to do after the expansion would be to reach out to those that did leave and offer them a special rate to reactivate their accounts. I encourage feedback (positive and negative), but it's all about how you deliver it. Are we finally being heard? I do believe so. Hang in there....

My own facts are this, I came on this forum here after our full guild began the diminishing to nothing that many others have seen. At that time it was issues over bans in giving guild sites info etc., maxed characters, and no new content to continue forward.

Perhaps not as aware one way or other of the ban issues as much any more, but surely can see the other issues. 8 months ago that torch was lit with no change, so that fire will continue to be kindled. Have they heard us, which month? What has been seen for it?
My view will remain the same, this torch will remain lit, until the light is seen and the path actually followed.
There is no throwing in the towel here, this is simply a continued plea to keep many others from throwing in the towel.

I would also agree to try to keep positive. It just won't make somethings go away though. To keep people involved, requires giving us the things so many are leaving over, not completely unrelated things.

I haven't got into Cuba swamp yet, so not sure about that. Have seen some graphic issues, mainly when holding right mouse button down and rotating pictures. Inter phase now with plunder popping up seems also real slow. Both these things I am unsure about on the quiet server for test, and what will happen on loaded servers.

Have seen overlapping several places, some are from entering a shop and then exit and it appears. Have to see as things get fixed what happens.

As for a dx10 on the new options that is not there at this time, but haven't got any of that to work yet anyways. Seems to be remaining at the written in files so far, such as pandadx9 etc. It automatically chose dx9 for me, having pandadx10 though may also end up at dx9 as well.

The difference in chat is words turn red that are typo's, numbers, banned words etc. They go through to other players now instead of cutting your entire sentence. (good thing) I don't like the auto send they have either. (cuts from back spacing something you didn't mean to say)
As I understand it, those on parent controls don't receive the red words you have in the sentences you sent.

I have found no point to the players button either.

Crew and all options now are based off clicking a player/player name and the pop-up window Sarah has a pic of.
Seeing a few issues in crew, but it pops up as before with members in crew. Now a little icon by crew leader, and what skills are being used by others as before.

Crew leader having issues when they log, they remain leader. (perhaps how its meant to stay)

edit: After testing sailing out today, the word of advice this patch is work your sailing now live.

The 25-50 character thing I think is going to be D's new method of trying to limit larger conversations they think are inapporpriate... and not going to go away :(

As for my pink Mod Tutu Text (as shown in your screenshot LOL) - just switch to the Crew Tab once you crew up - you Get Pink again :D

After this past weekends event I now understand the "C" or Code by the clothing. Seems that they may give us stuff that others will not have or when we fight creatures we'll get a code that we can enter to purchase.

It is easier to search for clothing as there is a "color chart" instead of the same design over and over just in different colors.

Another Improvement is that when you're on a crew and a ship is launched up pops a message saying so and you can board from that message!! That one I love!

I'm not impressed with the all-white-chat anyways - I find it harder to tell the difference on whos saying what to me...

Better than nothing. But just like ship repairs, would also be very useful in normal sailing. Do they get eaten by sharks when booted?
