is explosive worth it??

well i just noticed this and i am 1 lv away from explosive and i see that it shows that how much ammo you get per buy and it says that it cost 15 gold for 1 explosive... And i noticed from the chart on wiki that you can only hold 2 with out any barrels so is this reallly worth it? do share your experiences:pirate2:

The Skirata Clan 11-15-2008 06:10 AM

it is utterly useless mate. you can trow a grenade farther. it does a lot of damage. but takes a long time to load and has limited range. spend a point and no more. that is my most humble opinion.

Samule Sworddogger 11-15-2008 06:18 AM

Hey POTCO fan i just got explosive and it is very limited. It is a close range weapon and very slow to load. on the good side if you can reach your intended target it almost always sinks in flames. i use it on front guns when we do ram and slam also if im with a captain that scrapes the barnacals off with the enemy. hope that helps a bit

POTCO fan 11-15-2008 06:20 AM

ok so i best just spend 1 point on it for when an enemy ship comes very close?:bookishfj7:

The Skirata Clan 11-15-2008 08:28 AM

yes, very very close.

davy redflint 11-15-2008 12:06 PM

aye 1 point is enough.... nice effects when it explodes

Bartholomew Foulsteel 11-15-2008 04:20 PM

Well, you may THINK explosive is too limited to be worth it, but that's just because you're not being creative enough.

Imagine this:

War Frigate. The four front guns are manned. All are loaded with explosive. The captain sees the target... he calls out, "Ramming Speed!" He hits his victim, causing damage! He drops sails and Immediately he calls out, "Open Fire!" Immediately after the order, all four crew members pound an explosive right into the damaged area, causing TENS OF THOUSANDS of points of damage, sinking the target ship immediately!

Yup. The Krewe does it (we call it the Ram and Slam), and it works GREAT!

EDIT: Just saw yer post Sam... right on target, mate.

...and that's why you should put a point on it :) I donno about more (Bart may be able to provide how many points each of his crew have on theirs) but I have done this same tatic with the Colossus, and it works well :)

POTCO fan 11-15-2008 04:47 PM

ok yeah i think i will put a point into explosive for close hand cannon oh and i dont mind having slow recharge rate becasue i have 5 points in rapid reload :laughks2:(for training purposes)

Bartholomew Foulsteel 11-15-2008 10:30 PM

I only have one point.....

Jack Sharkbane 11-15-2008 10:36 PM

ok, I am aperrently a victim of the ram and slam!
I remember, some faint memory of SVS being him with ramming speed and saw a couple of cannons fly out the front, and next thing I know I'm having tea with Jones. huh. THAT is an impressive move.

Sarah 11-16-2008 12:46 AM

May I just add that if you are TOO close to your target, with two pirates side by side on cannons, the backdraft of explosive will send your cannon mate to jail. Trust me. Some of me guild think it funny to send Sarah off to the locker....

One point is sufficient. ;)

League 11-17-2008 01:33 AM

A Sloop croop is quite effective with that explosive ammo as well.

I guess the one point is good, seeing as the next four don't unlock anything new and drastically help the ammo, so eh.

On a different note, I take it the larger barrels don't help?

Kitfisto 11-27-2008 02:09 AM

I was shooting explosive the other day and it when a ways. I find it effective when you have an enemy ship close to you. Otherwise, stick to other ammo types.
PS: This is my first response hi everyone!

team black aumbu 12-02-2008 11:22 PM

i feel that one point should be put into explosive because in my opinion youd be better off maxing furry and lightning

League 12-03-2008 04:09 AM

So I take it the larger barrels don't increase how many rounds you can hold? Question still unanswered.

Bartholomew Foulsteel 12-03-2008 05:01 AM

AFter the "UPGRADE" where we went DOWN to being able to only hold 12, I believe that is the ultimate cap now.

Arioch 12-08-2008 05:04 AM

The ram and slam tactic is useful however the range on explosives is really short and the ramming technique is actually a sure fire way to ensure not missing the target.

However from prior experience I have noted that the reload times are so long and the fact you have to pause and make 100% sure your only good shot does not miss you could have pumped about 9 rounds of max fury into ship instead of that single round of explosives.

If you max explosives your other rounds will be that much weaker.

better to invest in MAX fire as it eats through take cover. if your gonna invest one point in a skill make it grape.

Fire is always a good investment as all ships use take cover and maxed out take cover is a full 20 seconds your rounds are ineffective.

I switch to fire the moment I see the take cover icon on a ship and the moment it appear to wear off I switch to Fury or Round shot depending on the pirate as a special mix off skills makes round shot more deadly then fury.

Jack Gunhawk 12-22-2008 11:47 PM

Hmmm, I think i wanna try a ram and slam on an ususpecting juggy

christopherocks 12-29-2008 04:24 PM

well i love it but doesn't mean you do it doesn't go far but it works good during a black perl it does about 3 k damage but also takes long to load

jason davy 01-10-2009 07:11 PM

if you decide to get it, dont waste more than one point. personally, i didnt put any in explosive at all.

akamystic 01-10-2009 07:54 PM

My personal opinion...only place one point in explosive. Unless you're in a close combat, it does not go very far and takes forever to recharge. If you do happen to land a shot it does do some nice damage. I don't even have a point in grape or chain shot as I do just fine with thunder or round shot taking out sails and players.

Passive cannon skills are also a matter of opinion. Some of my characters utilize them and others do not.

Rapid reload: does work, but do you need it when you can allocate those points into other skills for more damage? Six one way half dozen the other way perhaps?

Barrage: I cannot confirm if this does much of anything (can anyone?)

Shrapnel: I cannot confirm this either (can anyone?)

I personally would place as much into shoot (firing rate is crucial), round shot (it's free and does nice damage at higher level), firebrand, thunderbolt and fury.
