Cutlass-How do I skip Cleave?
Recently, I've seen a lot of threads telling everyone that they should skip cleave on the cutlass, and just go straight for flourish. This sounds great, but I have a problem. How do I do that? Florish says requires Cleave, so how do I get Flourish and skip Cleave? Thanks for answering- Doroda's Sword

I dont know if thats a PvP recommendation or not.
I personally always put a dot in each of the skills, more attacks, more reps. I click once.. get my set of attacks before the mob strikes back with thiers. The more attacks I get in, in my turn... the better! :) Other than that, im curious as well how this would effect the flow of cutlass battle having skipped a cutlass skill. |
Hey Zeppers, thanks for telling me that, but that doesn't really answer my question..How do i get flourish, while skipping Cleave, when Flourish says requires Cleave?
I still need to know how to actually skip the skill, when floruish REQUIRES Cleave. |
Ok, yes I realize I didnt answer your exact question.
I guess im curious as to the answer as well. I am not aware that any skill requires the previous. But i have a pirate i can retrain and see what happens!! |
Lol Zep. I'm pretty sure on cutlass and dagger skills, (idk what their proper term is) but the flourish and so on, do require the previous skill to have a skill point, in order to use them. If that made sense. It tells you that you can't do it, so I don't think its possible. But ya never know.
|
Ok, you cannot skip a skill, just verified it.
"Combo skills must be unlocked in order." is what it says. If it was able to be done before (which I had also read it could be done) it must have been something in an earlier version. The option is no longer available, if it was before. (for those thinking the idea is silly, there are many posts here from earlier on in the game where skipping skills such as Cleave is referenced) |
From what I've noticed since the latest updates, skipping combos isn't working so well. The timing of attacks is a bit messed up (or different at least). I've played around with cutlass and the only one I've been able to skip is the last combo, seems the first four have to be done in order.
|
I don't know if this would work but I've noticed that sometimes when I use Sweep or one of those skills and then attack again it acts like I'm still doing a combo but it takes like a freak of nature timing I've only ever done it on accident- and even then I can't remember if it skipped one of the combo

This is one of the things I have many times complained about on several different posts here. Over half the months this game has been out there has been a hand full of people paying attention to their stats. Those people have been wanting their points back that were wasted in things like blade instinct, that is not giving the percentage increase it states.
This leads to point buy back, and a simple thing of buying that 5th unused point in blade instinct back. Disney as usual, instead of a small adjustment, (or small degrade in cannon for svs) etc., jumps on a full out buy out for the skill. Now that they have insisted on not letting us have the stated values of blade instinct, spirit mastery, barrage, they try to penalize the players for after 9 months of having a lost point - getting it back. This penalization is to get the point back then you have to waste it in one of the useless combos in dagger like gouge. As well if you want to get rid of the wasted point you made a mistake on in cutlass like cleave, you can't. So with the buy back in points, and so few points in skills to use, they made sure to force garbage on us, other than a free choice of building a character you want. Now those who have multiple characters and made other characters right, do have these combos set up right, and everyone else is out of luck. To answer the question to this post, if you want to have a slightest amount of free choice to building your character, other than exactly what everyone else has. This would be such things like skipping cleave in cutlass, and have what others already have. Sit down, get all your friends together, and everyone write a letter to Disney. The main thing to do here is, make sure to say you don't want this, because that is basically only things Disney will do, if nobody wants it they will do it. |
You cant skip cleave, you have to learn all of them in order. It wouldnt make send if you skipped your 3rd combo, and learned your 4th. That would be like counting: 1, 2, 4..lol
|
On flourish, the description says that you MUST learn cleave to learn it. Hope this clears it up!

Like I said, with the last release and point trade in, this was made that way.
Apparently some think its great being the perfect little navy soldier, 1,2,3,4, hup 1,2,3,4. Some of us like to be pirates though, 1,2,4 or push a chimney duct at a opponent. (Movie Jack Sparrow) = pirate. What I would be worried about is all the people out there already with this and not the perfect navy soldier. |
It kinda makes the Cutlass less of a viable weapon, unassuming the full-combo build with 5 points in the last combo moves. Kinda stinks.
What they need is a viable combo system, a system that actually builds up damage per hits within a combo; then, they'd need to allow us to skip combos properly. (Another idea is to build a surprise stun system, where we don't get stunned in battle in the midst of battle: such would give Hack more pertinance.) |
Basically the cutlass is a giant mess after this. On top of that big D got themselves in a mess. What are they going to do now about all the pirates with skipped combos. Soon all the upcoming players find themselves in pvp with players with 5 points in skipped combos and slaughtering them - complaints.
This only leaves basically one thing, more downgrades to characters. With cutlass having a 5 combo, this leaves a big lack in skill points to build up the combos, and leave points for blade storm or other choices. I know from my end I stated all this on test, but it obviously was another ignored problem. My characters now have blade storm, and passives, and just enough to level in a few other skills. That is for characters that didn't have skipped combos how I wanted them. |

Thanks for all the advice and comments everyone. Hopefully, I will make more threads soon.

My first pirate skipped cleave and it made for a very smoothe flowing 4 part combo. Cleave is just plain awkward. Unfortuantely I retrained this pirate's cutlass and now she has the "required" combos. Face it no one, pirate or otherwise, is going to use an overhead strike unless they're desperate. It is not a "normal" sword move. But that said...
sorry you can't skip it anymore, you MUST use cleave before you can get flourish. |
This is still a non dealt issue at Disney.
I was against the new system, I am a pirate, not a soldier that lines up and fires when told or something. To skip a combo or use a different method of attack than the 1 2 3 4, is a given right to pirates. I do and don't have this on pirates, but what I find most disturbing is the perk out of this to some. Basically what it boils down to is all those pirates starting months before us others, setting this up. Now they have this while others and future pirates don't. The bad thing out of it, they are not likely to give us back freedom in skills, so eventually are going to have to deal with those that have this. With so many downgrades lately to paid accounts so free ones can play as even as possible, past history leads me to believe this to be one of their high priorities. |
combo skips were eliminated a month or two ago and now you cant get rid of cleave.

* Trainer NPC's at local blacksmiths can now retrain your weapons, by retraining a weapon you can refund all your spent skill points and allow you to re-choose your skills for that same weapon. More like 5 months ago back in October when they allowed us to buy back our skill points, same day bosses & the lvl 20 weapons were released. Used to be able to just save skill points and unlock whatever when you level, the old fashion way. There was a maintenance downtime that night for some sort of game update...but the only thing that was even close to that listed in the release notes wasn't until Release Notes - October 20, 2008 * Fixed a bug with skill respec pricing. This is sort of like the whole reduction in cannon ammo thing, it was never in the release notes, it just happened. Well same thing here, I thought you could place your points WHEREEVER after buying them back. Unfortunately, me like most people were busy doing the lvl 20 weapons quests & hunting for bosses, rather than sit and brainstorm on where to place my skill points at after buying them back. Only the people who brought their skill points back and redistributed them on the FIRST day the option to retrain your skills at a Trainer on Oct 17, were able to skip combos. =( The maintenance thing that night updated the game and threw in those Red words that said "Requires Cleave/Flourish/Gouge/etc". Ask anyone who retrained their weapons on the 1st day who remembers the Red words not being there... One of my friends got lucky, his cutlass is just simply maxed "Hack, Slash, Stab/Thrust"... which is as close & similar as you could possibly get to an NPC's attack where Officers/Mercs can just skip combos and go straight to their attacks randomly. |
Back in the day you could skip combo skills. No more. :(
|
Yes, before the updates where you could retrain weapons you could skip combos. I know some of the best pvpers skip it but you can't skip it now. And if you retrain that weapon where you did skip a combo, you now can't skip a combo.:smiley-rpg028:
