Does anyone else detest being called a noob?

I have been playing almost as long as the game has been open, I remember when I was the purple minority amongst a sea of gold, yet I have been called a noob on more than one occasion. I am considerate to other players, and I play well.. in my mind.. So why would I be a noob? Is it that people are hearing the word and saying it without knowing what they're saying? I don't really let it get me down, but it irritates me that I should be called a name.. Especially when it's one that doesn't describe me.. Is it happening to everyone or just me?
-Irritated in Iowa (only I'm not from Iowa, it just starts with an i, like in irritated.)

Chris 09-24-2008 10:57 PM

I would just ignore it people go around saying it to everyone. I'm a lvl 40 founder and i have been called a noob. Like you say i think they just dont know what it means and find it entertaining to call people noobs.

Swash 09-24-2008 10:57 PM

Noob is used by High levels Meaning annoying Basics. Unlimited shouldnt apply to the term Noob.

Noob: Someone whos new to a game and stinks at it.

Cant say as i've been called one, but i've definately called others one.

However, the circumstances I believed warranted it, and usually only having to do with thier sailing abilities and shooting at my ship.

A ship that keeps circling mine as if im in SvS and trying to sink me... or trying to shoot at my ship period, that captain will get the noob label everytime

I've had low level players doing silly things that define noob, and I will occasionally call them one.

If your an experienced player and acting noobish just for a change, expect it.
Not saying you are or were but there have been a few instances, id come across someone acting the part, wait to be called one, and then state "No im not, I have umpteen maxed pirates.. etc etc". Well my only reply then is, well you were acting like a noob, what kind of response did you expect knowing as much as you say you do? noob.

In the few instances I may have been called one, if I am a noob, I just say "Everyone starts somewhere", and if not I pay the ignorance no attention other than laughing it off.

Captain NightWolf 09-24-2008 11:01 PM

I wouldn't let it bother you...in fact you should be laughing at the person who said that to you...if anything they're the noob for saying it without knowing a persons history or background playing the game...

On top of it they probably say it as a sense of gratification when in fact they're just hiding under their own "noobishness"... :pirate_smiley_capta

AdmiralSavvy 09-24-2008 11:04 PM

I would just forget em. I'm fully mastered AND a Founder but I sometimes have people walk up to me calling me a newb. I'm guessing that they either don't know what the term "Newb" means, or they have been teased around before and they think it feels good to call other people newbs, in other words, an inferiority complex. For you all who don't know, an inferiority complex is a mental condition in which they have very low self esteem and may believe that giving others a hard time would make them feel good about themselves.
You can imagine the ones in game name calling to be children but it can always be an adult with a mental complex too. You never know.

Correction:

Someone who has a bit to learn about the game, or acts as if they have a bit to learn about they game (even if they dont). Some of these people are simply new to the game, while others have comprehension issues, dont care to learn, or simply choose to grief other players.

Swash 09-24-2008 11:05 PM

Whatever happened to the Term Uber.

emmalemmalemma 09-24-2008 11:10 PM

I don't ever act like a noob, Zep.. I'm always a lady wench :). I'm not sure why I get all worked up about it.. and noobishness is a funny word.. I guess you can't expect to be treated like a lady when you're imitating a pirate. I also made my first character on the larger side so that I wouldn't have to be like everyone else and I'd be left alone by the guys and wouldn't you know, they called me fat. Noob.. fat.. I guess it's all the same.. Though I wasn't offended when I was called fat because I don't necessarily look like my avatars..

Uber? like uber cool?

AdmiralSavvy 09-24-2008 11:13 PM

Newb, Newbie, Newbishness, what else is there, lol?

Swash 09-24-2008 11:15 PM

There was a Term Called Uber but I guess thats long gone.

emmalemmalemma 09-24-2008 11:16 PM

newbulls, I've never spelled that before.. That's how it sounds, that's what my neighbor calls my second child.. I guess because she's new? Newish, he named her that a while ago.. I'm not really a proficient in gamer talk..

icemage 09-24-2008 11:16 PM

Newb means new to something, obviously where newb came from... noob means you are annoying. If you aren't that then ignore them as everyone else says but if they really got on your nerves feel free to report them.

emmalemmalemma 09-24-2008 11:21 PM

Everyone's always talking about reporting people.. reporting people for shooting at you ship or for taking your reps, what is the point of reporting people? Do they get in trouble? I don't mean to be rude, but with all this reporting how will the people in charge know when someone is doing something seriously wrong? I don't know anything about reporting, can someone please explain it to me? Am I way off base? This thread should be titled emmalemmalemma's q&a session..

icemage 09-24-2008 11:24 PM

Report means to send a report to a GM (Game or Global Moderater or Master) don't know... so just report and then switch servers or just try to run away and hide. They won't know they got reported though but you could say like "Stop annoying me or calling me names or I will report you!!!" Sometimes GMs do something about sometimes they don't but it never hurts to try right? Good luck to you and hope that no one does that to you again :)

swashbuckler II 09-24-2008 11:32 PM

when a someone calls me a noob i say was makes you not one?

icemage 09-24-2008 11:37 PM

Not being annoying?

davy redflint 09-24-2008 11:40 PM

Stormhawk 09-25-2008 12:59 AM

I've been called a noob before on my second pirate. I have no idea why the person called me a noob. All I was doing was killing skels. The person who called me a noob had just come along and started attacking everything I attacked and then called me a noob. Pretty strange.:)

Mr.LoveLocket 09-25-2008 01:02 AM

do u expect a game to have 10000 considerate people?
Nope. Many people are newbies.
Just have fun and ignore them :)

hey, dont feel bad, back in the age of piracy, women had do disgusie as men to be let aboard, and to fit in! btw, dont let anybody tell ye yer a noob. ignore them, and if it be EBK ignore, then RUN.

beserker69 09-27-2008 02:25 PM

If a pirate calls you noob because you're a young pirate then they don't know what they're talking about. Newb is short for newbie, meaning new pirate and wasn't designed as a cut, but more of a descriptive word for new player. Noob came along afterwards from people who couldn't spell, and has since been used as a descriptive word for players acting clueless and doing things that mess other people up.

We're all newbs at one point, so being called that shouldn't be necessarily a bad thing.

Personally I don't like name calling, and don't approve of guild members doing it. I have but one rule in my guild and that's "Respect all pirates in or out of the guild". However, the name calling thing is hard to enforce as I can't be everywhere all the time. But I try to lead by example as do most of the officers.

But when you think of it, noob and newb are basically the same thing, and both stand for newbie, or new player. Some people use it for other things just because they have no idea what they are doing. So next time someone calls you a noob, and you're a young pirate, just tell them, "why yes, I am a new player, thank you for pointing that out."

PvP those who call ya a noob see if that dosen't shut em up

Diego Birmingham 09-30-2008 12:57 PM

Newbies shouldn't be harrassed just because they are new. "Older" pirates should recognize dumb stuff THEY did when new to the game, and maybe even help the noobs.

Remember that may player have multiple pirates so a "noob" doing strange things could actually be an experienced player applying his or her knowledge about things that may be beyond you.

Poison elf 09-30-2008 01:52 PM

Term has been around for awhile now, usually someone being rude trying to announce you don't know what you are doing.

You are a noob, until you are like level 40, than automatically you switch over to "complete computer nerd."

So its a no win scenario with some folks.

My favorite noob story was the guy calling me a noob, and that i didn't know what i was doing using my dagger like that. Soon as he got the words out of his mouth my character popped level 40.

Very true... I and several others I know have test pirates and low level pirates doing all kinds of quirky things :) Now true - we dont do noobish actions like 'friend me!friend me!friend me!friend me!' or those 'cheezy pickup lines' (the true markings of new immature players) - but - I'm sure a few times I've looked silly being in a few locations (lik KH getting gernades by myself at L20... I don't need the help, so I probably looked very noobish doing that :D )

Captain NightWolf 09-30-2008 02:26 PM

Newb: (noun) a person new to a game and/or gaming (newbie<adj>)...usually friendly and willing to learn...

Noob: (noun) a term used in a derogaroty way by someone with an inferiority complex trying to satisfy their own ego...

or...

Noob: (noun) a person deserving of the title if said person is acting like a moron or being disruptive to others...

Remember...it's not what you say it's how you say it...

ex: "You can lead a horse to water but a pencil must be lead"...

Reminds me of something my great great granddad Poopdeck Pappy always said...

"Never try to teach a pig to sing...it just wastes your time and annoys the pig"...

Draw your own conclusions... :psmiley35:

combatlizzy 09-30-2008 03:48 PM

We have all been newbys at one time or another...In fact my second pirate is low level and I get a kick out of her being called a newby...I think it is just the manner in which the word is said...if it is in a derogatory way...yes it is degrading...but if someone says it in jest...Like a guild member knowing that you have other pirates...It's time to ROFL along with them...Pirate on mateys

Edward Edgemenace 09-30-2008 07:18 PM

" 'Never wrestle with a pig. You get dirty. And the pig enjoys it.' "

noudidnt 09-30-2008 10:13 PM

I dont mind the names...
But I refer to the real noobs...people who bother you to join their crew after you have repeatedly declined, nicely.
My new trick is to join their crew, and go sailing....I just tag every ship I can get a canon on then return to PR...they get jail time, and I have the satisfaction of sending them to the locker.

lostinthelab 09-30-2008 10:21 PM

Aw Emma, don't let 'em get ya down. :buds: I just chalk it up to the teenagers (whether actually or mentally) trying to prove how cool they are. It's rather desperate on their part.

I did that with one of my baby pirates. It was a challenge to not wind up in jail and then have to sail all the way back. But I earned those grenades on my own and without using a glitch.

Reminds me of one of my basic days. I was in PvP and my opponent was attempting the undead glitch. I was called a noob because I was fighting in PvP. So that word gets throwed around alot these days. To be honest it never offended me because i was unaware of what it meant lol.

Chris 10-01-2008 12:35 AM

Sorry i couldnt help but burst out laughing when i read that "I was called a noob because i was fighting in pvp" now THATS hilarious what else are you supposed to do in PvP glitch out to become undead?

People these days never use things they way they were meant to be used.

Noob: Someone whos new to a game and stinks at it.

Correction my good man.

A newb is someone who stinks at a game but can improve and in time, given they are treated with respect and given guidance when they need it, will turn into a valuable veteran, ready to spread good will and basically improve the game for others.

A noob is more complex, yet mentally as simple as a rock. One example of a noob is someone who stinks at a game, refuses to admit their faults and constantly shift the blame to others. A noob ironically is typically the person calling everyone else noobs while yelling that they stink.

Another example known as the Elite noob, is a high level player, who throws their lvl at others despite the fact that a person's level isn't a testament to their skill, but to their patience. This noob will typically hang around lower level areas with the simple intention to grief newbs. A good example in POTCO is a player in a War Frigate/Galleon/Sloop who waits for a beginner to come to sea and then proceeds to kill every beginner level enemy in sight forcing the beginner to hunt down suicidally larger prey or wait for them to respond. After which the Elite noob will simply destroy all the Ferrets, Bulwarks, Panthers, and Sea Vipers again despite the very low income from hunting such small prey.

I wasn't aware of that practice. If people put half the energy into becoming better pirates that they do being annoying, the game would be full of great players.

Em-don't worry. I had someone tell me I looked like a pro wrestler...being a girl that wasn't really thrilling to me. What I would have given for a "pile driver" emoticon right then.

As for reporting people; I've only done that twice in extreme situations where one player was repeatedly interfering with other players after being asked politely to stop. People shooting my ship? Not worth reporting.

The only reason people call you a Noob is because most of the people that
have played where beta testers. So they where playing the game long before
you signed up.

Maximvs 10-16-2008 02:15 AM

Well, I've been around for some time and dont call new people noobs :)

I find there are 'new' players, those who have recently joined and go around doing their quests / levelling / learning - then there are noobs, those who hound you / message you 50 times / are not trying to learn just pester you...

Thats the difference to me I guess :)
