The first one is sorta bulgy eyes...for if someone says something shocking.

kk means okay.

BRT - Be right there.
ATM - At the moment.

Dr. Zeppers 09-24-2008 05:58 PM

NVM - Nevermind
k - also means "ok" easier than kk by one keystroke and just as silly. ;)
FYI - For your information

Heres a few FYI's:
"Aye" is not an acronym or abbreviation, its a word, and it doesnt mean "Yes" it is in an affirmative response, similar to "Yes" but not the same.
"C'mon" (self explanatory) is neither, its a slang term.

Please lets not start with the O_o stuff, those are more akin to smilies not acronyms.

Ok, these are just straight out lazyiness, and should NEVER be used unless you want to show your ignorance and lack of spelling ability.
One actually suggests you use an entirely different word, with an entirely different meaning to mean something else?

I must also add, in many years ive never seen these ever used in this capacity.

But "kk" passes the plus-sign chat, while "k" does not. "kk" should not be mistaken for "Okay, okay!" but rather, just "okay."

Ah, good clue, being one that never requires or cares for the plus-sign chat I didnt realize.

Rackat 09-24-2008 07:11 PM

Chris 09-24-2008 08:37 PM

Dr. Zeppers 09-24-2008 08:52 PM

yeah, I hope noone expects me to use or understand the numbers I will ignore such communications as garbage.

(sounds like the stuff that scared me out of TT)

Dont be using these things to give out PI either!

Hey theres another one: PI - Personal Information (or 3.14 depending on your perspective)

This thread is about COMMON shortenings and abbreviations. I personally do not like any of them, but they are absolutely prevalent in this game. I was dumbfounded hearing these. Again, this thread is not a dictionary, it is just a tiny list of the very most common shortenings commonly used in this game. A raised eyebrow googly eyes "o_O" certainly is one such thing. Are there a million variations? Yup. Are the others used in this game? Nope. Are any of them linguistically correct? #$@& no. So what? All the more reason to list them somewhere relevant.

If you don't turn on [+] a large portion of players can't hear you.

Noob
It is spelled "n00b" with a lower case "N" and zeros instead of the letter of the alphabet.

Swash 09-25-2008 08:18 PM

Noob is spelled Noob or Newb not n00b if you spell Noob n00b then your not using a word at all your using a new made up word that refers to Noob.

Aye, but to include them on the list also encourages one to use them.
Plus those are not common shortenings, they are common mispellings. There is a difference.

Just because some show POOR etiquette does not mean the rest of us should acknowledge it.

Swash 09-25-2008 09:55 PM

This Guide Is to Tell Parents and children what brb and lol mean on POTCO or POF.

n00b is a valid entry... don't know much about l33t sp3k? d u n00b :)

In fact - much of the compiled list (outside of the POTCO pirate-y type communicato) is actually just off-forms of l33t sp3k :D

Is this coming from the same person that makes the egregious mistake of thinking that "irregardless" is a valid word? :laughks2:

The point is, to list the common ones somewhere for people. I did not know that you are able to read minds...amazing. How do you know when something is a misspelling vs. something being a shortening (that happens to pass the [+] filter.)

Anyhow, you can't guess the motivation for someone using a common POTCO shortening, acronym, smiley, abbreviation or even a misspelling. For example, to type "what's up" in an eye dialect, I usually type " 'sup " to show the elision. In this game, only "sup" is possible to type - without its essential preceding apostrophe. Yet every time I log in, I hear someone say "sup" or "Sup?" or "Sup." being used to mean "hello." Obviously, the kids today are not using the archaic meaning of "to eat one's supper" for the word "sup."

Note: The light-hearted teasing above is being said (typed) with a friendly smile on my face. No insult is intended in any of what I've made friendly jibes about, above. On some level, I strongly share OfxZepper's hatred of these mistakes. If it were me, I'd auto-correct all the common errors to proper standard English. But for the purposes of POF, there should be a short list here, of the common stuff one encounters in-game.

And what drawn out research have you done on this topic? Swash, you weren't even born yet, in the era of "leet speek" - how on Earth do you propose to validate your incorrect position? Sorry, but "n00b" has been the proper leet spelling for over 25 years.

Stormhawk 09-25-2008 10:53 PM

whats the purpose of typing n00b when you can type the actual word Noob?:)

AdmiralSavvy 09-25-2008 11:11 PM

Mr.LoveLocket 09-25-2008 11:13 PM

As declared in the Urban Dictionary - the official source for all short-speak code:

n00b

Someone who is new at something or unexperienced (also called a newbie)
Johnny: What does "omg" mean, Stacey?
Stacey: Omg, Johnny, your such a n00b!
n00b noob newb n00bie newbie
Jun 17, 2008

Noob and n00b are both listed and accepted as current speak.

Now - if we are going to open this to "Real Dictionaries" - almost NONE of your list qualifies.

So the thread continues ONLY if everyones contributions are allowed - otherwise the thread is closed for being biased.

You decided...

Mr.LoveLocket 09-27-2008 03:54 PM

Very Good :)

Of course if the games + chat wouldn't filter SO badly we wouldnt need 1/2 of this list (espically numbers... and the words 'steer' = stare and 'wheel' = whee - asking someone to drive or not drive the ship is a pain :D )

Chris 09-27-2008 05:45 PM

Yea i tried playing with the + on last night and couldnt stand it i dont know how people play like that you cant say anything!

MacIronhawk 09-27-2008 07:29 PM

The um...Ex. I have won tree sven zero gold left.
Well....I can use numbers 11 and higher without them saying arr or not showing up on my chat.
Are there that many limited access palyers?
Sorry but it seems as if numbers work fine for me because I'm unlimited access.
But good idea to use that for basic access members. :D
I'd use that if I was a basic access member.

Some accounts have restricted chat access based on age/parental controls.

This has nothing to do with basic vs unlimited.
