Sailing Reputation Chart
About Sailing Reputation We can get Reputation point during high sea adventures by defeating NPC (Non-player character) ships. We DO NOT get any Reputation point or plunder or quest credit from NPC ships while we are in Privateering (Ship PvP) mode. The total Reputation from a defeated ship goes to our Notoriety experience. For more info about Notoriety please visit Potco Wiki. This Reputation point is earned by using these skills: - Sailing Skill Attack enemy ship with Broadsides and Ramming Speed. These are the only skills that give Reputation point to Sailing experience. When we are steering the ship and have crewmates on board we also get Reputation point from their cannon/grenade attack to enemy ship. - Cannon Skill Each type of Cannon ammo has different usage and capability and when used in battle will give Reputation point to Cannon experience. - Grenade Skill If we are close enough to enemy ship we can throw grenades and get Reputation point for our Grenade experience. For more info about sea combat please visit Potco Wiki. Sailing, Cannon, and Grenade give a maximum of 100 Reputation point each, so we can get up to 300 Reputation point (without bonus) by defeating an enemy ship. Sailing Reputation Chart This chart shows the Reputation point we can get for each skill used in sea combat. Multiply this number with how many time we use that skill, repeat for all skill used in that combat, then we get the Total Reputation from that enemy which is always displayed after we sink the enemy ship. Example:Also included in this chart is the Damage caused by using each skill. The numbers represented here is based on a pirate with Notoriety Level 40, Sailing Level 25, and Cannon Level 25 (with only one Skill Point applied to each combat skill). http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...RepSailing.jpg http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...artRepCrew.jpg http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...tRepCannon.jpg http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...hipGrenade.jpg Enemy's Level From the Reputation Chart we can see that high level enemies (yellow or red) give bigger Reputation point than medium level (green) or low level (grey). This classification depend on our Notoriety level, our sailing/cannon/grenade level and the enemy's level. But unlike land enemies, NPC ship's level tag are not colored so it's difficult for us to know exactly their level category. To determine which color/level an NPC ship belong to we can use this formula: http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...eMinYellow.jpg http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...EnemyColor.jpg Example: Enemy's Hull Point Hull point of enemy ships depends on their type and level. Most of them have less Hull point when compared to the same type of our ship, except those with level 30 or above. I tried to calculate Hull point from different type of NPC ships and the results are shown below, but these numbers are rounded down and only approximate. Also I may miscalculate some so you can help improve this table by trying to calculate enemy ship's hull point in game and give correction or contribute new ship type/level that are not included here yet.
Counting Damage Point Skill Panel To know the damage capability of our cannon skill we can press "K" and the Skill panel will be displayed. Select cannon and hover mouse cursor to the prefered skill and in the small info box we can read the damage range of that skill. These numbers are true only when facing an enemy which level is EQUAL TO our Notoriety level. Damage points are higher for lower level enemies and are lower for higher level enemies. As our cannon level grows the damage point for each skill also increase. Basic Broadside damage in Sailing Skill Panel is equal to basic Round Shot damage point in Cannon Skill Panel. Skill Point We can increase the cannon damage point by putting skill points to any Ammo skill. Each skill point will increase the damage point by 25% of the standard damage point. 1 skill point applied - standard damageAnother way to increase cannon damage point is by putting skill point in Barrage (Passive Skill). Each skill point will increase all cannon skills damage point by 5%. In Sailing skill panel, every additional skill point applied to Broadside will also increase its damage point by 5%. But one skill point is only good for Left or Right Broadside. Choosing which skill to be upgraded depends on what kind of pirate we want to build: If we want to focus more on Reputation point then we should not increase the damage to cannon skills that we often exploit in building our Cannon/Sailing experience and no skill point at all in Barrage passive skill. But if we want to build a pirate with powerful cannon/broadside capability such as to gain an upper hand in Ship PvP then we might want to maximize the Barrage passive skill and certain cannon Ammo skill like Thunderbolt or Explosive and also to Left/Right Broadside in Sailing skill. To build a pirate with balance capability then we can apply one or two skill point in Barrage, maximize Thunderbolt and one or two additional skill point in both Broadsides. The choice is yours, but remember that skill point should be spent wisely as once applied it cannot be undone, at least for now. Inner/Outer Hull When we attack the hull of an enemy ship, our cannonball or broadside only deal normal damage at first. But with more attack at the same section of the hull we can see from the target's hull meter at the top of our screen that its strength is decreasing. When that part start to burn/emit smokes then it means that the outer hull is already broken and further attack on that area will give us damage bonus. Hitting the rear part of the target ship also deals bigger damage and when that rear part is broken then the damage bonus here is also bigger than the damage bonus from other part of the ship. If we want to get more Reputation point then we should not hit the rear part of the target ship and also avoid the broken section of the hull. But if we want to sink the target ship immediatelly then we should aim our cannon/broadside to these parts. Target Distance Attacking enemy ship when they are still far and outside radar will deal less damage. As it approach us and get closer the damage point from our cannon and broadsides will increase. But the bonus damage point when we hit the inner hull (broken part) is the same regardless of the distance to our ship. If we want to get more Reputation point then we should hit the target ship as it is still far from us. To ensure this we should first take down all masts then position our ship so that the target ship sits around the edge of the radar map. This is the optimum position because our cannon and broadsides can reach the target ship but still maintain a minimum damage possible and the target ship's cannon and broadsides can't reach us. If we want to sink the target ship quickly then just aim for masts and hull especially the rear part and broken hull regardless of its distance to us. Tips to Maximize Reputation for Sailing Experience When firing Broadsides (Left or Right) only cannonballs that hit the target give Reputation point to our Sailing experience. The damage from each cannonball is the same with Round Shot skill in Cannon, but they don't affect each other. Putting more Skill point in Broadside skill doesn't raise damage to Round Shot skill and vice versa. Ramming Speed gives the biggest Reputation point for Sailing experience, but using this skill put us very close to enemy ship and thus vulnerable to their broadside attack. We have to be agile in maneuvering our ship to avoid them and Round About skill can be useful here. From the Reputation chart above we can see that damage from Ramming Speed depends on our ship type. Weakest is Light sloop and strongest is War Frigate. Again we have to remember that the maximum Reputation point we can get for Sailing experience is 100, so by using Reputation chart above we can estimate when to stop using Sailing skills and switch to cannon or grenade to get the most Reputation point from the target ship. The Captain at helm also get Reputation point from crewmates on board who attack with cannon or grenade. But the points are so small (see chart) that even with Crew Bonus the Captain rarely receive decent Reputation point. So the Captain must use Broadsides to get more Reputation point for his/her Sailing experience, but Broadsides are very powerful (especially on better ships) they can sink enemy ship quickly and crewmates won't get good Reputation point. The more Crewmates on board the less Reputation earned for each, so everyone then will race to attack the enemy ship and in the end no one get good Reputation point. This is a dillema when going to sea combat with crewmates and it's just like a party where the more guest invited the thinner slice of cake each will get. I believe the only solution here is to have a good strategy and cooperation among all crew so each can receive good Reputation point. Here is my suggestion: First thing to remember is that the larger the crew the bigger the enemy ship needed. Because bigger ships have higher Hull point (see Enemy's Hull Point table above) and that means more attack possible for the group and more Reputation point for everyone. After a target is selected and within firing range, every crewmates should aim their cannon for the masts first and NO one should aim for the hull. Thunderbolt is prefered when target is still far and Chain Shot is best when target is close enough. Since the July 23 update, hitting the sail won't slow down the target and cannonballs must strike directly at the mast. Try to take down all masts before it gets too close and be able to attack us. Then after the target ship can't move anymore, the Captain or anyone in crew who needs Sailing experience should take helm while other crewmates switch their cannon ammunition to Round Shot. If a player had put more than one Skill point in Round Shot, it's better to select other cannon ammo that deals the least damage like Chain Shot. Now everyone on cannon can attack the hull and to minimize damage try to avoid broken hull part if possible, also the person at helm should not use Broadside too often. If necessary we can approach the target and use Ramming Speed to get more Reputation point, while at the same time other crewmates can use Grapple Hook or throw grenades because these ammo/weapon give extra Reputation point but only effective when target is close. It's best to do this when target ship almost sink so we won't suffer too many broadside/cannon attacks. If everyone cooperate and no one is being selfish then all player on board will get good Reputation point and further Crew Bonus will make us agree that to sail with large crew is better than sailing alone. My suggestion above is suitable only when our focus is only in getting the most Reputation point. But sometimes we sail just to get plunder or to finish quest, in this case we can forget Reputation point. Sailing is also a very good activity to socialize with friends or guildmates. The more the merrier, and sometimes it is worth it to sacrifice our pursue for Reputation point and have fun with friends. Remember that it's just a game. But still it's best when we can combine them all: get good plunder, good Reputation point, finish our quest, and have a blast with our crewmates. Tips to Maximize Reputation for Cannon Experience From the Reputation chart we can see that Explosive gives the best Reputation point for Cannon, followed by Thunderbolt and Grapple Hook. But Explosive is good only for short range and the damage is so big it's not wise to use it when we have other crewmates who are also trying to get cannon experience on board. Explosive is also the most expensive cannonball but good thing is we always get free 50 ammo when we first unlock this skill. Thunderbolt can reach very far so it is perfect for long range attack, to lure enemy ship to come to us, effective to take down mast, and it also give good Reputation point. But the damage caused is also big so when all masts of enemy ship are down it's best to switch to other ammunition that deal less damage. Surprisingly, Grapple Hook gives the same Reputation point with Thunderbolt. It's designed to board flagship so it can't reach far and only deals -1 damage but that's what makes it the perfect ammo to get big Reputation point. I tried several position and found the optimum position for our ship to fire Grapple Hook. See picture below:
Fury, Firebrand, and Round Shot give the lowest Reputation point among cannon skills. But Round Shot is free and deals low damage so it is ideal for attacking enemy's hull part. Grape shot gives medium Reputation point and very useful to disable enemies aboard flagships, especially on a high level ship so the captain (usually the highest level) won't be there when we board the flagship. Grape shot won't hit the enemy ship no matter how close we are and won't give the captain at helm any credit when we use it. The Reputation point only for us and displayed immediately when the enemy is defeated while Reputation from other cannon skills are displayed after the ship is sunk or disabled for flagship. When using Grape Shot the level color tag above enemy's head is not for our cannon but it's for our currently selected weapon so we can't use Grape Shot to check the enemy's level color classification (see Enemy's Level section above). Example:Like the previous tip, this strategy is only good when our focus is solely in getting the most Reputation point for cannon experience. When we only seek plunder or trying to finish quest, and especially when in critical situation where we almost lost our ship then we can forget Reputation point and just use our powerful cannonballs to defeat the enemy. Tips to Maximize Reputation for Grenade Experience Maybe not many of us know that we can use grenades on NPC ships and get Reputation point for our grenade experience after it sinks. But we have to get close to the target ship and use Long Volley skill for our grenade to reach it. So we need a good captain at helm to maneuver the ship while other crewmates use grenade. It's better if we first take down all masts of the target ship then the captain must try to get the ship as close as possible while avoiding its broadside and cannon attacks. A bit difficult but still possible to accomplish. But if the enemy is too dangerous too approach (like the EITC Corsair) then it's best to just stick to cannon or broadside and forget the grenades. All type of grenades only deal -1 damage to the target ship but give same Reputation point as when fighting land enemies. Pressing Ctrl key longer to recharge the Long Volley skill won't increase the damage point but only the throwing distance. It's best to fully charge the Long Volley to make sure that the grenade will reach the ship. We can also use grenade to kill NPC enemies on a flagship. Crew Bonus Team up with our friends to form a Crew and we can get up to 50% bonus Reputation point. 2 Crew members - 20% bonus 3 Crew members - 25% bonus 4 Crew members - 30% bonus 5 Crew members - 35% bonus 6 Crew members - 40% bonus 7 Crew members - 45% bonus 8 Crew members - 50% bonus http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...pCrewBonus.jpg Remember not to stand too far from other crewmates or we won't receive the bonus Reputation point. If we can see them well inside our radar (full zoom) that means we still get the bonus. If we use the front cannons of a War Frigate, the captain at helm is too far from us and we won't get Crew Bonus if we use these cannons. Sailing Glitch There are glitches in sailing that some players often exploit to easily defeat NPC ships. The most popular glitch i think is the invincible ship glitch. I don't really recommend this glitch as it is not the way the game is intended to be played and if we become too dependant to it then the sea will be a nightmare to us once this glitch is fixed. It's obvious that if we use this glitch then it will be very easy for us to get the maximum Reputation point from a ship. But if we keep using this glitch all the time then we might lose these sailing/cannon skills: - the ability to shoot a target from very far away - aware of our surrounding and keep checking the radar to see if any enemy ship comes from behind - maneuver our ship to avoid enemy's broadside and cannon attacks - find a path in crowded water to avoid enemy's aggressiveness - and other important skills to survive in sea combat So in my opinion it's best to train our maneuvering skill and cannon skill by not becoming too dependant to this glitch, so that when they fix this glitch we won't be a totally complete noob in sea combat. |

wowsers you really know how to make a guide O_o
|
Great guide Ironhawk, it's a very indepth read for all those people who are getting frustrated with the challenge of leveling sailing/grenades faster, and I for one believe this should be a sticky. :)
|
what an awesome job you did here..
didnt know i could throw nades at ships.. i'ma try that one!!! |
I've had very different experiences with throwing grenades, especially at crippled flagship captains. This will be fun to investigate a little more.
At last, now I know why people who should know better, board my ship then idiotically shoot grappling hooks. Perhaps your guide should remind people to be polite and respond to questions (and/or STOP when asked to stop.) As an absolute minimum, if on a someone's ship who may not know you well, EXPLAIN what you are doing...don't just sit there silently firing grapple hooks like a moron. I'd love to see your crew on a reputaion-only run, use thunder for masts, then park behind stern of enemy ship, let everyone grapple 20 times, then each person take the helm and fire one volley of broadsides. Does each person get 150-200 rep? It makes me want to delete a pirate to start over, just to see. |
I would say that in most cases, those seen shooting the grappling hook are probably doing so by accident because the cannon was left with it loaded last (from boarding a ship).
Most that would make use of this guide, would likely already be accustomed to interacting and working with the crew, etc. As far as reminding people how to be polite, etc. I dont think this guide would be a place for that. That comes down to behavior which no guide is going to change. Most behaving poorly are those that dont take the time to learn/interact like those here, reading the guide would. Intriguing, going to give some of this information a shot... so to speak ;) Thanks Ironhawk... stickying your guides is starting to be a full time job! ;) |
Lol Thanks a lot Zep for stickying my guides.
To be honest I just found out about grenades and Grapple Hook while gathering data for this chart. Took almost two weeks to complete and because my old pirates had maxed sailing and cannon i had to work on my new one to get to level 20 to get the data for Fury. To Edward: Throwing nades at flagship captain always work for me. What did you find out? And yes firing Grapple Hook 25 times give us 100 rep for cannon. Try 24 and we get 96 rep. Better let other take down the mast first so your cannon rep only from Grapple Hook if you want to test it. |

I'll let you know if I hit a flagship captain with grenades. My long volleys have never hit; I'd wait for the flagship to "be in position" ready for boarding before throwing...were you doing something different, or am I that bad a shot with grenades? |
Incredible amount of work on this! Outstanding!

Throwing nade at flagship captain is a bit tricky because the target ship sway around. We have to time it right while at the same time keep the long volley charge not too high or too low to reach it. In the pic below my position is higher than the flagship captain so i just charge the long volley around 50%. http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r...deFlagship.jpg I usually miss a lot here so i prefer grape shot but nade is fun. Good luck! |
wow u make awesome guides!
|
YOU DA KING!
YOU DA BOMB! I hate sailing. Now I wanna go home and sail after reading this! |
lol thanks
btw i just updated the Grapple Hook tips and add new pic for it |

How do you calculate hull points of level 3 or 4 bulwark or ferret? Count up the damage you do, one cannonball at a time? I just have to say, again, WOW what a great guide. It hasn't been said enough yet. |
I don't think we can get more than 100 rep that must be an old beta picture or something like that.
Seriously how'd you get 300 rep? You can barely get 200 with a big crew. |
:psmiley27:
Quote:
A full crew could definately do 300 (with a 50% bonus) 100 cannon + 50% bonus + 100 sailing + 50% bonus = 300 Throwing grenades could up that even more being a 3rd weapon and its attacks to utilize. The picture reflects a person getting 100 pts for cannon, 100pts for sailing, and 100pts for grenades. Quite doable. |
ALso I think you get credit for what crewmates do right?

The most rep i've ever gotten with a crew was 150 so I was thinknig this had to be an edit. Wow I think I need to get a crew and try that. |
Please add a "recommendations" section for the cannon level up tactic: buy a war frigate or regular frigate, launch from Padres del Fuego, but DON'T LEAVE PORT. Go take one of the four front guns and LEARN HOW TO AIM WITH THE MOUSE! People with high sailing levels and low cannon levels get 100 (plus crew bonus) rep for every single kill there. The enemy ships approach, but don't attack much, until someone takes the helm and leaves port.
More should be said somewhere, to remind people to aim cannons only with their mouse. I hate using the computer mouse, but there is no substitute for its targeting accuracy. |

Seems like they are always bringing those ships your talking about upon my ship when im launching, and causing me immediate damage. They also gripe at you the time if you sink the ship they were being lazy with. Unfortunately most are not doing it for the reasons you state either, most are doing it to quickly fill thier holds and port without having to sail at all. Quote:

Thanks again ironhawk!
You got my other's account sailing from 1 to 8 in one day with a light sloop lol |
Quote:
How do you make your pirate run, using only the mouse? |
Quote:
2 are set special. 1 is R for run, another is SHIFT to open doors, etc. Although my mouse emulates these keys, the game doesnt recognize my use of them as being on the keyboard apparently. |
What is best to go after
Have you ever wondered which ships offer the most exp?
Well that depends on your sailing level. The best shp i think you can have is a war galleon[/COLOR]. you may not get enough exp from sinking ships with it but you can sink ships faster. I want some people to give me answers on what the best ship people should have and the best kind of tarets for that ship. For the war galleon i say any navy skeleton or eitc ship lvl 30 + is best for the war galleon :rip: to all others. for the war frigate any lvl 30 + ship from man o war to juggernaught to death omen this ship can sink them all please! dont hesitate to reply!!!!:Hcool::Hrolleyes::candycorn::pump kinani: |
Well, which ship is best has been debated before in a few threads.
Since whats best is really going to vary from sailor to sailor it always ends up being a matter of whats most popular. If anything it has been pretty much determined the most 'popular' ship is the War Frigate. Personally I prefer the War Galleon as any 'perks' the War Frigate has over War Galleon I personally do not need for successful plundering. I find the larger hold allows me to stay out longer and get more plunder for my troubles. I generally have no problems filling the ship up and staying in the 'green' hull wise (usually 2-10 gold damage a trip). Additional hull strength, or broadside strength of War Frigate, I do not require. As for gaining for reps, there is a Sailing reputation guide: http://www.piratesonlineforums.com/f...ead.php?t=7141 It may help in deciding what targets are best, as it also depends on your own notoriety and sailing levels im pretty sure. In the long run the higher the numbers, the better the reps (up to 100). If your getting 100+ reps on a ship, its a high enough level :) As for plunder, I find all the higher level 25+ War Galleons, War Frigates, and War Sloops all do somewhat the same, varying in amounts, and type. Alot of which I think is random, with a touch of "treasure sense" thrown into the equation. (Until reassignment of skill points comes about, i still think Treasure sense a waste of skill points, unless you anticipate using it to reassign your sailing as soon as it becomes available. As you progress, gold gets easier and easier to obtain. |
Thanks for the reply. Hope to see all of ye lookin at this

war frigate is nice and all but....
1.broadsides command(usually/ 2.more cargo=more$ 3.more armor so that your ship doesnt catch fire:laugh:(this has caused me to sink before) 4.you can do man over board glitch:pumpkinani: 5.war frigates lose their crew bonus.... 6.more sail life war galleons are great but... 1.war frigates are faster 2.war frigates got more cannons 3.war frigates got more life 4.war frigates can carry more people 5.ramming speed is inhanced by drill so it depends on who you are.... but i like war galleon best :devil8: |

Great guide!
But could you clarify one thing for me? Do you get exp from PvP or not? |
Sorry that I'm late on this. But I gotta say that:
THIS GUIDE IS SICK! This deserves more then a sticky, it deserves to be on the POTCO website! Great job Ironhawk! :) |

This is perhaps the best guide I have ever read.
This guide has helped me level up my sailing and cannon level. Obviously Edward read this before me because he helped me get my cannon level to 20 to 21 in under thirty minutes.(or within an hour.) I will continue to use this guide until I master my cannon. |
got a quick question. im mastered on sail. however i cannot get the last skill level to open. its the one called leadership. it comes after the take cover skill.. im a level 40 pirate master with everything except cannons mastered.. am i missing something. do i need master cannon for that sail skill to open.. arrrrrghhh LOL

Master Sail is the prize you get for completing the Pearl Quest - it is not a 'weapon earned' skill but a 'quest completed' skill :) Once you see jack after saving th Pearl - you are awarded Master Sail. It also holds no 'earned points' - so you do not need to save points for it to make it better. |
Great Guide! Subscribed for future updates :) *Can I use sailing to lvl grenades or is my best bet just sticking to land?*

I GOT A STAFF!!!!!!!!! |
How did you get 155 fury? I think it only goes up till 125.
|
nicholas, i think those pictures were taken before the limit got set to 125, we used to be able to carry 175 explosives lol
|
Clear as mud ! But ty very much. This is gonna be one of those u have to keep coming back to ... Still not sure how a pirate with lvl 25 sail n lvl 25 cannon at lvl 40 is gonna get any rep... were u meaning notor or did u fry my brains so Im just not gettin it?

again another great guide

I gotta agree with the guide! I got atleast 4 cannon lvs when I started using that trick. I have already started teaching my pirate friends to de-mast a ship then attack it with round shot. I hope everyone else found this guide as helpful as I did
|
WOW u made a good guide.
