Morale - things I've tried to raise it

I thought morale should be boosted by doing things that pirates consider fun. But mine constantly goes down no matter what I do. I tried the following things and did them for about a half hour each to see if my meter would go up at all but it continually declined the entire time:

Played poker, won most hands.
Purchased and consumed various tonics and waters from the Gypsy Mystic.
Took tasks for gold from various townspeople.
Sword fighting with skeletons only.
Then with navy only.
Sailing the ocean blue but firing at nothing.
Sailing and taking down every ship I pass.
Docking which gives us our gold after sailing.
Standing around and moving slightly so I don't log out.

None of those things worked. I haven't tried PVP battles because when I first draw my cutlass I lag severely and sometimes the game crashes and that's bad for MY morale.

Nice work there Stella !!
I think I have noticed that mine goes up when I battle alongside others, but then I may just be hallucinating from too much rum. :D

I think completing a quest or "up"ing a level raises your morale. i dont believe it matters what type of quest either. I was at moral-91. when i began playing for a while last night - raised my cannon levels to level 6 and "up"ed notierity to level 7 and did two sink ship quests from the commoners on Torguga. I also did about 3 or four full pludering loaded ships runs. (so maybe that was it if the quest thing is wrong) I was morale 95 when i signed off. I will pay closer attention next time

Killing navy guards and sinking navy ships raise your morale. Being defeated lowers it by a percent or two.

Each red bar represents a single percent. It's kinda screwy in that the red bar gets shorter and shorter toward the left as your morale is raising. At least it felt backwards to me!

Stella Ruby 04-25-2007 04:51 PM

That doesn't sound like what is happening with mine.

Generally mine stays at 88 now. If it's low before I set sail I let the crabs nibble on me until I return to jail for a full morale boost (how backward is that?!!). Then I sail and sink ships that are levels higher than I am. I also kill the crew members before I sink the ships. My red bar decreases as the minutes pass, I can rarely stay out a full 30 minutes without my morale giving way and sending me to jail.

I was wondering if my battling style had anything to do with it so I've tried the following:

1. Battled with only my broadsides on ships a higher level than me. This took forever to kill one off and my morale declined the entire time.

2. Battled ships using my standard method of firing both broadsides, shooting down the main sail, killing the crew, then sinking the ship. Morale steadily declined and had only a tad left after about 24 mins so had to return and dock.

3. Battled ships using only my cannons and not aiming at the crew. No results other than what I've already listed.

In short, my morale never does boost unless I get a level-up which doesn't happen as often at notoriety 9, cannons 10. After each battle I check my treasures to see if I've uncovered any more Rogues or Gold Teeth or even various keepsakes and when I do that hasn't boosted morale either. Docking and getting gold for my bounty never increases my morale.

Hmm, I don't think you understood what I was saying.

Each bar counts as a percent. If you have the crabs bite you and go back to jail, you are losing morale! The bar looks like it raised, but the overall percentage dropped!

The bar appears to move backwards when you are gaining morale. When out killing the navy, it may look like it's going down, but when the bar runs out, you'll see that the percentage goes up (not down) and you get a new bar to work towards your next percent.

If you are never defeated and just keep shooting ships/crew, I promise you will be fine.

No, this is not what's happening to me at all. My bar starts out as red and I've been stuck at 88% morale for a few days now, it never goes up or down. But the red bar keeps moving to the left, when I have just a pinch of red color still showing, I hit the deck (or sand depending on where I am). I was standing in the middle of town yesterday just watching the red bar decline and WHAM! off to jail I went. I can play the game usually for about an hour before my morale bar gives out but it seems if I'm sailing it declines much faster.
I send in a series of screenshots every time it happens; surely they will fix it just to stop my emails. :)

My moral consistently stays in the high nineties. Does it impact your fighting or anything? It doesn't seem to make a difference in anything to me.

Spandex

Stella Ruby 04-26-2007 04:44 AM

It does impact my fighting because it steadily declines then kills me off.

searage 04-26-2007 02:23 PM

yikes! sounds like yer pirate ran outta rum and has become suicidal!!

Stella Ruby 04-26-2007 06:08 PM

Funny you should mention that, I did try to get her drunk at the tavern to increase her morale (don't pirates enjoy that?) and no one would serve up the rum.

Jack Sunshot 04-28-2007 07:20 PM

I think turning in tasks that give gold is the thing that raises morale the most. My morale was down at about 95%, and I took 5 quests for gold, turned them all in at once, and when I got done, my morale was at 98, almost 99. So I think questing helps your morale the most, specifically the for gold quests.

Stella Ruby 04-28-2007 09:20 PM

I've tried that. My morale is now at 87.

Minichristy 04-28-2007 11:35 PM

I am as confused as you are! Sometimes, my morale goes up when firing cannons, sometimes not. Same with finding gold, or fighting. Maybe we will get an explanation soon!

charlotte 05-07-2007 07:13 PM

Wouldn't it be interesting if each pirate had their own tastes as far as what boosts their morale? Makes it a little more difficult to figure out what to do, but if it were a choice that'd be great! One of the many selections when you create a pirate?

Anywho, as for what's going on now... I haven't paid much attention to my morale as I haven't had it go down that much. Maybe because my time in jail is few and far between?? Last night I did notice though that my morale finally dipped below the nineties and was at 88%. But I was doing crazy things aboard Navy ships and ending up in jail technically. Altho I either ended up back on my ship at full health and lower morale or below the ocean in no man's land (but when trying to teleport it told me I was in jail).

I do a mix of things when I play and I usually never have low morale. So maybe mixing it up helps? I don't do a lot of quests, just complete a thing here and there. I'll fight a guard or undead on an island, go out a sink ships til my cargo hold is full, come back and work on another quest (searching, playing cards, etc.).

piratesahoy 05-07-2007 08:17 PM

Are there any problems with taking quests for gold? I stopped doing it when we couldn't go in buildings because of the black screen.

CaptnKidd 07-02-2007 11:07 PM

I think Morale does effect fighting: I was building up a Pistol level in the Caves of Padres del Fuego with a Character with 76 morale. My hite rate seemed like 50%, every other shot was a Miss or Dogged. I went back to the same area with another character for the same reason - both characters pistols were at the same level, with same shot. Only difference was the second character had a Morale of 96. Only 1 in every 6 shots was a Miss or Dogged this time.:jacksparrowvswillzu

Wow - sounds like a horrible bug - I assume you have reported and complained? I have 2 old pirates (before 18 May mishap) and 2 newer ones - taking out enemies, regardless of what, at a higher level than me always raises my morale - at least a tiny bit - strange bug that makes yours go down. Have you made a new priate and is this a problem with them? Your research seems very complete and I do hope you have reported it with coordinates and screenshots and all. If one person is having this trouble, then others out there (maybe not aware of this forum) are having the same trouble - best of luck mate! :sailr:

Dolnor 07-04-2007 08:01 AM

Morale seems to affect "to-hit" ratios. At 100 morale, I was almost hitting with every sword stroke. At 82 morale, I am hitting about 52% of the time.

To raise your morale, you have to fight mobs and/or ships that are a higher level than your Reputation. If you are sinking level 8 ships when you are a 10 Rep, you won't gain morale. Same with the critters/mobs...they must be higher than your current Rep for you to gain morale.

Think about it...beating something weak doesn't give your pirate any sense of accomplishment and your 'mood' stays the same. Yeah, that was too <yawn> easy. But when you fight something a level or more higher than you, it is a challenge to stay alive and your pirate is thinking "Yeah, that's right you stinking lubber...I'm the Man (or Woman, depending on your toon) and you are now crab food. I showed you! Yeah!" So your morale goes up and you are more sure of yourself and your abilities of striking your next opponents!

Of course, those are just my opinions. Test it for yourselves, fellow testers! -)

I just have fun on the game, and go sink ghost ships off of Cuba with my friends, and my morale shoots up. It was at 92, now it's at almost 95.

berryu 07-05-2007 05:38 AM

I have never seen my moral drop lower than 97.... but i never do anything. lol

Bellatrix 07-05-2007 06:18 AM

Right now my morale is 98 because I forgot to heal while fighting a stump.

The best way to have a 100 morale is to avoid getting killed. If you are ever about to die, just log off. Works every time. :)

Oh, and if you need to raise your morale fast, sailing if the best way.

DreadPirateZilly 07-07-2007 04:41 PM

Seems me morale does better if oi aims carefully and hits rather than just firing as fast as possible and hoping it hits. Hit/Miss ratio?
