Have you ever crewed with a stranger(s) to get crew points?

i have! :laughks2: if you happen to be in the same place lvling with somebody, why not crew up and get some extra points? you're both there anyway!

[edit] i was mainly talking about while you're lvling. there have been several times where i'm in Tormenta and someone else comes in. if they're not being annoying and minding their own business, they're there anyway so you might as well crew up and get more points.

I don't usually crew up unless its with friends or guildmembers. The few times I did crew up with strangers, they all asked what type of ship everyone had. I mentioned I had a frigate everyone decided we should use my ship. Okay fine. I had to kick three different people off the wheel. Thats the one thing I don't tolerate is the hijack of my ship. Needless to say, I don't crew up unless I know at least a few of the crew members. Well unless someone asks for help with the Black Pearl. I guess I'm becoming more easily irrated in my old age. LOL.:pirate2:

Remember you're not just crewing with a random person, you're crewing with everyone they crewed with (and maybe everyone they crewed with)

It's just too risky.

On ships I crew with random people all the time, but not really for the bonus - I've mastered sailing and need to up my cannon. Since I don't let strangers sail my ships, crewing for other captains is the way I've had to go. Unfortunately, even on a "good" crew everyone's using lighting and the enemy goes down so fast I'm lucky to get ten points. The alternative, which I've been doing more and more, is sailing alone, parking somewhere safe, and then sinking everything in the vicinity by myself. Better rep, but pretty darn boring...

I will crew with strangers in the cave, though, for points and easy ammo runs. I've actually made some good friends that way. :)

Also, LoL @ mongo's response. Too funny. :laughks2:

I've been crewing up with random people lately and so far it has not become a problem and actually quite enjoyable. I am not fond when some crew members that join my crew sail off in their own ships while my crew and I are already in a ship. Why not just board my ship and take a cannon?

lol, that is really funny!

Since they added the "Find a Crew" feature, before Ruby joined her guild, she would use that every so often for cannon practice.

Sometimes it was like pulling teeth with no novocaine...

Angel 05-22-2008 08:06 PM

I do. Last night I was at tormenta trying to level up. There were a few others there doing the same thing. We all crewed together and it helped alot. Not only were we able to keep an eye on everyones health and heal if htey got too low, but the crew reps and go-to incase u die.....Lets just say I added a few to my friends list last night.

Poison elf 05-26-2008 11:59 PM

I have crewed from time to time, in most cases it demonstrated how many people don't know what they are doing, nor what you are doing. Tormenta is a great example. Even had a guy come up to me telling me i am a newb, shouldn't be fighting like that. Just as this level 39 character finished spitting that out I hit level 40, after a time period of like three weeks.

This sorta is how it ends up when you crew, too many think that means everything you hit (especially the lower levels) is fare game. When working on something like nades, setting it up to use smoke bombs to get more rep, someone comes along and kills it before ya get the smoke bomb attacks on it. This costs ya like 40 rep each time then, and you are actually loosing rep in a crew. Let alone setting up two molusk to hit with each grenade.

We eventually addressed some of these issues within our own guild, many times they would do this same thing as well. We have a few rules to porting to officers, and always coming to them attacking what they are working at. It can get bad if you have friends coming all the time on top of guildies, just the moment you are about to release a siege bomb, and hits the incoming player to kill you.

Now this isn't always the case of course, but more times than not it is.

Chernabog 05-27-2008 03:45 AM

Yes, I do it all the time. I've met most of my friends this way. If I see someone leveling where I am, I wait a while to see if they will mind their own business and not come over and try to steal the rep from what I am killing. If they keep to themselves, after a while I will often go over and ask if they want to crew up just for the rep. Most people will say yes.

Not exactly (unless you are on a ship). If you do this in Tormenta or El Sudaron and all of this person's crew members start jumping in, all you have to do is switch servers. End of crew. :skull:

I'll crew up and join a crew if they have a big health amount and are on a ship, or if they ask for help or me to join them. I can't say I have, however, crewed up with someone nearby for leveling since the new system was implemented.

Dog 05-30-2008 12:43 PM

I'll only crew a stranger when im wearing a coat. Otherwise I only crew close friends.

JamiSings 06-02-2008 01:32 AM

The few times I crewed with strangers at least one person would act so childish and annoying I wouldn't even sail with them. Now I only crew with guild members. Though if someone from these forums wanted to crew with me because we had a quest in common I'd be willing to accept.

Dr. Zeppers 06-02-2008 03:28 AM

I have occasionally crew'ed up with strangers for the rep bonus, however I have only done this on land, not at sea where a team effort (or at least coordination) is alot more important.

Angel 06-02-2008 07:42 AM

LOL I wont crew at sea with people I dont know. If I know a few shipmates, than thats a different story. Most of the time I crew with friends at sea and keep the strangers to land where I can run away if they start to scare me.

Joseph 07-18-2008 05:58 PM

Ive made a lot of friends being crewed up with random people

Harukantos 07-18-2008 05:59 PM

Some reason, I feel my best of friends are people I meet in random spots and ask them if they need assistance.

davy redflint 07-19-2008 03:20 PM

done it in king head when g-nadin also give u a way to tp f ammo plus the extra reps. work well we took turns

fire monkey 07-19-2008 03:40 PM

i only crew and judge ppl that i crew by their health that shows on the crew list if they have under 1500 health i leave the crew

QoTL 08-22-2008 12:48 PM

I crew up with random people all the time. Only had one bad experience so far (partly my fault.. partly not. Had to leave computer for a minute, came back and the capt'n was a jerk to me.. I jumped ship because I was mad, and he threw me off the crew lol!). Otherwise, it's been wonderful. I have found that I tend to crew up with people who are obviously over 18, although it's not really deliberate (at least not conciously lol). I am honest about my cannon skills (stink but getting much better with practice). I've had people do a goto and come on my boat- in one instance that rocked, because the girl was terrific. Usually, though, it's a mixed blessing.

I have noticed onboard ship that either the captain completely understands what it means to have a crew (as in.. try not to lose cannon time by switching sides) or he/she doesn't get it at ALL which has me running back and forth practically foaming at the mouth (not so bad if there is a larger crew, but stinks if it's just me or even me and one other on the cannons). It's all fun, though.

As far as in a random fight- I will if they seem like a nice person, who is also fighting. I won't crew up with people who ask if I'm just running by through town though, since it usually seems like they expect me to follow them around on their errands like a puppy.. which I'm not.

I can't say I've ever joined a crew just to get extra points while leveling though. Great idea!

This is how i met 2 of my best friends in the game. Met both in El Surdaron leveling weapons on the stumps. Played with both ppl for several months together now. Both ended up coming into my guild.

I don't do it as often as I used to, but sometimes you take a chance and they turn out to be great playing partners and great friends.

Edward Edgemenace 08-22-2008 04:10 PM

The whole crew matching thing is an important part of the game. I almost always have it turned on. For privateering, that is disastrous, as most "randoms" are actually Spanish spies that rejoin one second after being kicked (even if ignored or reported.) I think the new style of excluding all newcomers from experienced crews, is a cruel mistake. I was once level 1. So were you.

Before privateering, it was rare to have a complete lunatic join by crew matching. (The day they released the new islands was a notable exception to that.) Usually, a clueless noob would be just that - clueless (but willing to learn.) You used to be able to TALK to someone shooting grappling hooks, to explain the green circles concept. Before ship-vs-ship, people would listen if you took the time to explain it.

While the crew matching thing is better than it was with manual crews only, there are serious defects that make it increasingly hazardous. People kicked don't STAY kicked. People ignored or reported can still join crew. SvS flag affiliation is ignored - you can become a "spy" accidentally.

For sailing, the concept of a crew is quite different than the POTCO concept of a crew. What might work a lot better, would be if a new "crew" was started every time you launch a ship. If you had a way of connecting with people from your last three (or four or five) crews, there would be the needed continuity. (Without it, we'd need larger friend lists.) With crew matching turned on by default with each launch, you'd never be waiting around to find a ship to board, to level up cannons. Problematic people could be kicked (or keel hauled, or made to walk the plank) and crew matching could be left on, if only the crew matching would KEEP them out of crew, once kicked.
