Test Release Notes - April 18 2008

Release Notes - April 18 2008
  • Added level 4 weapon upgrades for Sword, Pistol, Dagger, Voodoo Doll, and Voodoo Staff. You will receive new weapon upgrades through new quest lines. *Update: these are currently turned off as we modify the way you will obtain these quests.*
  • Can now purchase ammo pouches. These pouches allows you to carry more ammo (i.e. bullets, cannonballs, daggers, grenades) than the base amount.
  • Made it easier to find a crew using your crew panel. To open your crew panel, hit the F key, and then press the "Crew" button. You can now:
    • Create a crew: Crew Options -> Start A
    • Crew Search for crewmates (once you’ve started a crew): Crew Options -> Recruit Crewmates. There are also advanced options for more discerning captains.
    • Join someone else's crew: Crew Options -> Search For A Crew
    • Let others near you know that you are looking for a crew: Crew Options -> Looking For Crew
  • Added better bonuses for crewing. The notoriety bonus is 20% for a crew of 2, and it ramps up to max bonus of 100% for an 8 person crew. Note: you currently receive the bonus no matter where your crewmates are. We are likely going to change this so the bonus only applies to crewmates in your nearby zone. We'd love to hear your feedback on this!
  • Improved whisper functionality.
    • Chat panel remains in whisper mode as long as player doesn't click X or try to reply to an absent avatar
    • By pressing Alt-Enter, you can automatically whisper to the player that most recently whispered to you
    • Chat panel provides more feedback when sending a whisper to someone who went away
  • Modified the way NPC's target their attackers: they used to attack the person that first attacked them, but now will switch between attacking the person doing the most damage and others nearby that are doing damage. We will likely modify this after doing some more play testing. Again, we'd love to hear your feedback on this!
  • Removed groggy penalty until you reach level 10 in order to make the early player experience a bit smoother
  • Shortened the length of the groggy penalty
  • Shortened recharge time for tonics
  • Moved tonics to the first tab in the gypsy cart to make them easier to find
  • Added "Welcome Worlds" for players coming out of Rambleshack. These worlds are separate instances and only contain Port Royal. Once a player gets on a ship for the first time, he/she will be placed in one of the main servers.
  • Added /event command so you can see what events are in progress and how much time is remaining. Type /event into your chat panel to activate this feature.
  • Fixed a bug that was allowing strangers on your ship. Only friends and crewmates of the ship's captain should now be able to board.
  • Added new animations and a panel describing your reward when unlocking a new weapon.
  • Added new quests to receive jewelry and tattoos that you can not buy in shops:
    • "Spy Trouble"
      • Receive from Perla Alodia, Jeweler on Padres Del Fuego
    • "Black Market"
      • Receive from Mercedes Corazon, Tattoo Artist on Padres Del Fuego
    • "Eliminating The Competition"
      • Receive from Dajin Ming, Jeweler on Tortuga
    • "Lala's Brother"
      • Receive from Lala Lovel, Tattoo Artist on Tortuga
    • "Smitty's Sickness"
      • Receive from Jeweler Smitty, Jeweler on Port Royal
    • "Family Valuables"
      • Receive from Solomon O'Dougal, Tattoo Artist on Port Royal
    • "Precious Treasures"
      • Receive from Perla Alodia, Jeweler on Padres Del Fuego
    • "Picking Up The Slack"
      • Receive from Dajin Ming, Jeweler on Tortuga
    • "Smitty's Debt"
      • Receive from Jeweler Smitty, Jeweler on Port Royal
    • "Special Ink"
      • Receive from Solomon O'Dougal, Tattoo Artist on Port Royal
    • "Lala's Neighbors"
      • Receive from Lala Lovel, Tattoo Artist on Tortuga
    • "Helping Mercedes Corazon"
      • Receive from Mercedes Corazon, Tattoo Artist on Padres Del Fuego

Known Issues - April 18 2008
  • If you sink during the Black Pearl Boss Battle, you will get stuck at a loading screen.
    • Workaround: you will have to close your window and log in again.

I'm glad to see so many updates to the game at one time. Shows that they really are seriously working at making it better. Well done, PotCO!

thefadedrose 04-19-2008 01:58 PM

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I cannot wait for this to hit the public servers. I get so tired of running to the weapon shop every time I come back on shore. And bless them for shortening the groggy penalty. LOL. Kani

Chris 04-19-2008 01:59 PM

AWESOME awesome awesome!!!! now when are they comin to open!!!

Captain Fireskull 04-19-2008 02:04 PM

Thats awesome!!!!! I cant wait till it hits the public servers

Maximvs 04-19-2008 02:05 PM

This is Ex-x-x-cellent News! And a great start to making major improvements in the game...

I look forward to seeing them - and I'm willing to wait until they get it right before Live Release :)

Shadow Cat 04-19-2008 02:07 PM

Woot, sounds like some awesome updates! :dancetl6:

Davy 04-19-2008 02:31 PM

I hope the enemy does 3 attacks then switches to the next person. That will make it good for training lower level pirates.

Nick 04-19-2008 03:08 PM

some nice updates but where is trading... :p

Angel 04-19-2008 03:29 PM

OMG Flippin sweet!!! I want to see some of these changes! The crew thing....purrrrrfect!

Sarah 04-19-2008 03:34 PM

I can't find a single thing wrong with anything on that list :) Rock On!

Thrawn33 04-19-2008 03:36 PM

Awesome. I want

The Beautiful Letdown 04-19-2008 03:41 PM

Awesome, this is the kind of stuff I like to see :)

Kat Sheffield 04-19-2008 04:18 PM

This is really encouraging! And what's nice to see is that Disney is actually listening to our suggestions regarding the stowaway issue. So everyone keep making your suggestions too and this way the Summer update is going to blow us away! Or, at least I hope. Great job to Disney for stepping it up with this update, can't wait for it to go live on public.:dancetl6:

Chris Ironhawk 04-19-2008 04:49 PM

This is a good way to get rid of all of the lower level noobs. As long as they r attacking, that enemy will attack them.

Now, I will be killing only guys in Tormenta so that when noobs come, I will go to the level 32 Brinescums and Seabeards so that they will attack and die!!!!!

yes, awesome updates. anyone know dates of when it will hit the public? and you can still hex the brines and the lower levels and others will still come steal your reps and not listen when you tell them to stop

AdmiralSavvy 04-19-2008 05:21 PM

Woot!

Pure awesome! I can't wait for the no stowaways update! Haha about time!

PotCO rolled out the latest update last night on the Test Servers, and it is going to make a lot of people happy. Although there isn't a new storyline, there is quite a bit of new content. So, consider this a preview of coming attractions:
Ammo pouches and cannonball barrels. Available to purchase in small, medium and large sizes (depending on your weapon level), these allow you to carry more ammo than the base amount. No more constantly running to the gunsmith or blacksmith to restock! A major plus in my book. No more Skelly glitch to get more ammo.
Better rep bonuses for crewing: starting at 20% for 2 crew, up to 100% for 8 or more. Not sure how I feel about this. It will be nice to get higher rep and I understand they are doing it to make the game more social, but it will make leveling too easy.
Enemies will now switch their attacks between the person doing the most damage and others nearby that are doing damage -- not just the first person who attacked them. (PotCO expects to modify this some more and is asking for our feedback.) Not sure if I like this either. If I am helping a lower level to level, i would hate to see the enemy turn on the lower level.
No more stowaways! Only friends and crewmates of the ship's captain should now be able to board. Oh my! I think I need a cold shower now!
Tonics recharge faster. Definately do not like this change. From a PvP standpoint, this will be awful.
Improved functionality to Whisper Chat and Crewing Options. I have a bad habit of typing in the wrong boxes, so unless they can analyze what I type and put it in the appropriate crew, local, guild, or whisper box for me, it won't help me.

Great info. Thanks for documenting all those goodies. See the quote for my comments.

Maximvs 04-19-2008 06:28 PM

Well if he get to review the list :)

Well I wanna Critique The List too!!! :)

Quote:

- Weapons Upgrades for sword, pistol, dagger, doll, and staff. The upgrades will be available through new quests. (Note: These are temporarily disabled as PotCO modifies how exactly we obtain the quests.)

Eh, since I don't upgrade weapons at the moment on Pirate #2 (interferes with Hi Rep) - it will be fun for pirate #1 :) Good for general players :)

- Ammo pouches and cannonball barrels. Available to purchase in small, medium and large sizes (depending on your weapon level), these allow you to carry more ammo than the base amount. No more constantly running to the gunsmith or blacksmith to restock!

Thank goodness :) This was badly needed... since I'm not a Skekey Glitch user its painful to keep running back and forth :)

- Better rep bonuses for crewing: starting at 20% for 2 crew, up to 100% for 8 or more.

This could go two ways - good and bad. Overall though - combined with the Enemies Attacking multiple pirates I think this finally brings to the forefront that Pirates need to actually tackle NPC characters at their levels / moderately above them - and stops the whole L9 Pirate attacking a L36 Seabeard option. Keeps the Pirates focused on the NPC's they should be fighting - and can take moderately higher ones with a crew (and because of it deserve a bonus for doing so). I'll say its good for now - but I do see a few scenarios where it could go wrong (which is why I don't mind some extra testing time to get this right :) )

- A dozen new quests to receive jewelry and tattoos not available in the shops. (I've started 3 of them so far and they also contain several of the "go and talk to so-and-so" tasks for 100 Notoriety each. And the tasks include sinking Barracudas and Marauders, so they're not all fluff either.)

Sweet :) This is a good :) Just adding content is a good thing :)

- Enemies will now switch their attacks between the person doing the most damage and others nearby that are doing damage -- not just the first person who attacked them. (PotCO expects to modify this some more and is asking for our feedback.)

Combined with the Crew Rep - see comments there :) I'm holding a 'reserved' good on this because of what I think it is trying to resolve - but we'll see :)

No more stowaways! Only friends and crewmates of the ship's captain should now be able to board.

WOOOOO! *two thumbs up*! ALL GOOD!!!

Groggy penalty has been removed for pirates under Level 10, and has been shortened for the rest of us.

For the lower level pirates - I think a really short Groggy would have been better than none - just to show the concept. For the higher... I believe theres a penalty to pay for being 'foolish' (attacking a L40 Uni at L22 is dumb - and you derve to pay a price). As long as this is not TOO short - then I'm ok with it. Too short though does not enforce the idea that 'maybe I need to level up a bit first'.... :)

Tonics recharge faster.

I can see PvP not liking this - where as a general player would :) Maybe they should remove it from PvP all together :)

Improved functionality to Whisper Chat and Crewing Options.

I was reading the other list in the thread - theres been major issues addressed here. Good :) There can always be more room for improvement - but even in just a few short months big steps have happened with chat and I hope to see more :)
Overall I think it will be a good update :) Thanks Storm for posting it :)

Stormrunner 04-19-2008 07:10 PM

OK mates! I've been playing on Test all morning and have a few thoughts about the update.

I completely LOVE this additon! The medium-size cannon barrel (cost 2000 gold) holds 125 of Firebrand and Thunderbolt! No need to use either sparingly now. And the medium grenade sack (cost 4000 gold) holds 125 Explosive and 70 Fire Bomb.

A good idea in theory, but I think they've taken it a bit too far in practice. I was on a crew with 3 others and was getting something like 40% bonus rep. For example, I was killing Big Gators for 20 rep each and got an extra 7-8 as a crew bonus. (They actually show you the Crew Rep separately.) And the numbers we were getting from sinking ships were ridiculous! Sweet when you're leveling, but makes it almost too easy.

Still moving along in the quests. Haven't completed any yet, as there are probably a good 8-10 tasks to each. (And I'm having little luck finding 6 batches of medical remedies from EITC Corvettes. They're being very stingy.)
No more stowaways! Only friends and crewmates of the ship's captain should now be able to board.
Looks like this works, but, as might be expected, I hit a bug. Even though I was on the captain's crew, I could not tp to her. I kept getting a message saying that I needed to be part of the captain's crew! So I had to use the tried & true method of boarding a dinghy to get on the ship.
Improved functionality to Whisper Chat....
As soon as you Whisper to somebody, the chat box stays in Whisper mode to that person. You don't have to keep selecting their name off your list. Makes having a conversation with individual friends/guildmates much easier.

I haven't had a chance to test out the new NPC attack mode yet. But, aside from the too-generous Crew Rep, I think PotCO has done a bang-up job with this so far.

Oh thank you D! I have made some very embarrasing guild echos that were intended to be whispered to a member that was being counseled. This should aleviate that issue with my inatentiveness in the future.

Thanks for giving us the ammo limits as well. It is nice to see some figures on that. I'd rep this post, but it says I need to spread it around a little before I rep you again. :)

I wonder if this could be 'scalable' to the Level of the Pirate? REP I find is an issue for those higher up - but never for Lower Levels (I am semi-ignoring my own theroy of what I think they are trying to accomplish here - in keeping Lower Level Pirates on track, along with the use of Multi-Attacking NPC's) - by increasing the values as your Levels went up would be an answer...

But - if I now take into account that Lower Level Pirates will not be able to 'leech' (not a term I really want to use and don't want to get into a debate over in this discussion pleae :) ) as much as they risk dying all the time - I wonder if the scale is still required for them at their levels...

I do like the concept, and hope the whole 'balence' can be worked out - oh how I wish I had a test account now - so many theroies to test... :)

Thrawn33 04-19-2008 08:00 PM

What will be nice is if the enemies' attacks work the same way for them as they do for players. I know its asking alot but still....

Exs:
If an Urchinfist throws a 'nade at you, everyone close to you gets hit as well.
A sweep attack from a sword swinger hits everyone in range around it
Mollusks can attune anyone attacking them
Enemy ships deck cannons can target different ships from those being hit by broadsides

Dare I say, make a few Voodoo staff weilding enemies....

Things could get real hostile for the noobies.

I still wish the ranged undead would show some sort of emotion, like throwing a grenade, so I can tell which of the 5 are actually doing it. Or face me when you throw that at me, at least. Perhaps some aura around the attacking enemy that shows you which one is doing the damage. The other thing related to this, that would be nice, is to have them miss once or twice. They will hit with every throw, but at least they will take area damage as well if you are nose to nose. And dont get me started on the Gypsy attune range. I think one on Padres Beach successfully attuned me in my jail cell at the fort last night.

Happy Days are here again

This posting has totally made my day and just yesterday I started contemplating on canceling my account. Now Im totally going to stick it out through the summer at least. Please keep posting the Happy News!

One thing I do not like is the attacking one. I mean if I'm attacking a brigand helping a lower level get their PR totem, I dont want to have to protect them too. I just want to do it and get it over with. Also, make it fair for both the NPC and us....if a doll wielder can cats hexes from a mile away we shouldnt have to be up in their grill to do it.

LOL nothing like cutting to the chase :) Well, if you have them tuned for healing just tune the Birgade for attacking... or if Attacking the Birgade let them use Tonics (since they will be shorter now - I find too many pirates depend on a doll user anyway and not enough on tonics...) - either way :) True - may slow one down for the Kingshead Gernades runs and the Padres TP Quests - so its another twist to review :)

Bigger picture (I think - only my 2 cents hehe) with correct balence in bonus REP working with the NPC Attack it will severly cut down on the 'taggers' problems (without having to do the REAL right thing and re-design the game engine correctly to balence Weapon Damage to REP instead of Hits to REP hehehe ;) )

As for the Voodoo NPC - really... the RANGE they get sometimes - I wish I could get that :)

Well looks like crewing is going to be a necessity for lower leveled players now and its not really a bad thing.

Nice update, I noticed it beofre I went to sleep, ship joining was fixed and I got a few new Jewlery quests. Looks like they managed to pack a few updates into this Release..

Just for a change in direction. :) This is actually a cool concept... doesn't 'overwhelm' the player when they enter the first world seeing L37 Pirates running past them - I think this is cool idea... and another good thing about the update.

anybody else had problems with guns since the update? both my test server pirates cannot use guns now as when I switch to gun I cant shoot and cant even change weapons so end up having to run away to a doorway or something so that the gun is put awayand I can then switch back to sword or something

Same thing has happened to me a couple times since the update. My pistol will be fine for awhile, then suddenly stop working for me. However, I am able to put it away and switch weapons, although it doesn't always respond right away. The only way I can return it to working order is to relog. Yes, a Bug Report has been sent.

While on the subject, I also sent in reports on the following bugs that I encountered this morning:

1. Crew Rep Bonus was not working. Despite showing up on the screen, it was not being added to either Notoriety or the weapon.

2. Cannonballs stopped having any effect in the midst of sinking a Phantom. Everything was fine until I got it down to about 25% of hull strength, then it suddenly stopped taking any damage. Tried Round Shot, Fire Brand and Thunderbolt to no avail. Finally had to retake the helm and broadside it.

3. I received my Voodoo Staff this morning (nice animation, btw, of Tia presenting it to me) to find that only Blast was unlocked. I got it up to Level 2 and Pestilence unlocked, skipping Soul Flay altogether. Same thing happened to a friend of mine yesterday, so this looks like it might be a real issue.

Actually - same here - I thought at first I dodn't 'pull' it out properly... and this is on live...

It always works, once I reload it and only about 4 times since the updates :)

dizzymommy 04-21-2008 12:44 AM

Love the updates on test so far. I've managed to work through 2 jewelery quests, and on tatoo quest. Not easy to whip through but most of us on live are done the main quests so nice to have something to work on.

What they didn't mention on this update is that they've decreased the healing of tonics. I don't like this and think they went to far. The top tonic now only does 500 healing!!!! yes 500 instead of the old 2000 and it still costs 100 gold. The now do 100, 200, 300 (old 1000), 400 (instead of 1500), and 500.

Also not sure if this is a new thing to make it harder but my hex shot was not working on the gypsies. I think I may know what is happening now but not sure if this is a glitch or new difficulty. Seems to me that I hit them about 3 times once hexed and they wake up. Also it takes me about 3 times as many shots to get them hexed. Many of my shots where not showing any voodoo coming off the enemy. I'm going to test this again right now.

I've finished one of the tattoo quests from Mercedes on Padres and am part way through the second. But it's going to take me awhile to sink 10 Skellies. (This had better be an awesome tattoo!)

Good catch! I wondered why I only got 300 when I gulped some down, but didn't give it any more thought.

I killed my fair share of Gypsies in the past two days and my hex shot only acted wonky a couple times, so I'm thinking it's a glitch. (In fact, since my new staff is "broken" and doesn't have Soul Flay, I've had to tediously Blast hex-shot Gypsies in order to level it.) There was one stubborn Level 23 Gypsy in the Catacombs, however, who simply refused to stop poking me, regardless of how much hex shot I pumped into him. I finally switched to regular lead shot and ended the encounter.

Diego Birmingham 04-21-2008 07:44 PM

Sounds like they may be trying to slow down the game. I still haven't gotten to the Boss Battle yet; but most people on here seem to be way beyond me and maxing everything out. These changes may be designed to make it harder to do that. I think it would be better if the game were more open ended.

Elizabeth O'hara - live level 35

I noticed the same thing on Open. Only the gypsies seem to be regenerating their voodoo though, the mollusks and brinescum still stand there after getting hexed. Seemed to happen after the Double Rep weekend.

Same thing happened to me a while back. Once I got a few skill points I tried clicking on where soul flay should be and then it turned the lightish color that skills are once you unlock them. Then I added another skill point and then it worked

I cannot wait for these new updates, but I hope they come out this month because they said they were.

I agree, I think they should remove the gold cap,at least, and add more levels to the weapons, too:piratetongueor4:

i think they will raise noto cap to 50 and weap cap to 30 in the summer when the "big expansion" comes

as for it coming to open it looks like mid june from all the bug reports im reading about here

The one thing i dont like is how they put so many updates into one huge one. they should do littler packs and not a huge one. It will take too long:sadmh9:

Agreed. Giving little updates over time keeps a "newer" feel to the game.

Chris 04-23-2008 08:31 PM

yea but i think di$ney sees it as releasing lots of updates brings a BAM! to the game

Soul Patch The Fiesty 04-24-2008 03:57 PM

Smaller steps are better, at getting to the end result, but as a downside, keep them game down for a bit. I've played Everquest for years, and it's constant running jokes about patching after the patches to fix the fixes that the patch patched. If you did things one at a time, you can slip them in, and get the going the right way. It would be nice to see one MMO do things right.

I found the new crewing system very confusing, but I like the new graphics and the crew notoriety updates, SWEET!

goldlover 04-26-2008 11:39 PM

I have been waiting a while for these updates but they never seem to be almost finished.:sadmh9:

here are some questions and comments

Q1: Ok i hear since the last update the crew percents arent great bc u have to be in sight of you other crew mates to get the rep, which means you woulkd get the same rep by yourself?

C1: These new weapon quests can anyone post what they unlock (like someone told me from the lvl 15 pistol u get a pistol with no reloads)

C2: How are those pouches? Do they cost alot? if so how much? and what are their advantages?

C3:how is the new tonic reloads? better? how much faster?

C4: Is the whisper function alot easier to use now?

C5: this new tonic stuff now only give 100 200 300 400 qnd 500 health?????????? is the price less???
ty for answering these questions and i do realize disney does not want pictures of the test servers released however if you can not release this info then just 1 person post saying that u cant disclose any info about the test servers.

C1: These new weapon quests can anyone post what they unlock (like someone told me from the lvl 15 pistol u get a pistol with no reloads) I would like to know the answer to that one

C2: How are those pouches? Do they cost alot? if so how much? and what are their advantages?IIRC the pouch was 3k? and it stored up to 100 lightning/firebrand/fury etc or somewhere in that ballpark

C3:how is the new tonic reloads? better? how much faster? Faster, but the original way is better IMO, now tonics restore much less health then before for the same price!

C4: Is the whisper function alot easier to use now? once you whisper to someone it stays on whisper to that person when u try to whisper.

C5: this new tonic stuff now only give 100 200 300 400 qnd 500 health?????????? is the price less??? Price is the same for less health tonics.

Added to your questions from what Ive read in tis thread or somewhere else on the forums......

Chris 04-30-2008 01:12 AM

ok thx :)

i still think the tonics update was a waste i mean faster recharge but less health the contradict each other and neutralize (ah! i told my friend not to hit me with a dictionary!)

another question

How many of each tonic are u now able to hold?
