POTCO Crashing More?

(I think this is the right forum. :P)
Recently, the Caribbean has acquired a horrible plague of game crashes. An unusual amount of people have caught this crashing epidemic (not to mention how many times those individual players crash themselves o_o). This can get very annoying, and really doesn't help when your internet connection isn't very strong. I know that some players are experiencing this sickness, but how many pirates here are getting affected by it? And what do you think may be the causes of this issue?

I have noticed this a lot lately, people have just been randomly logging of and coming back on saying things on the lines of, "POTCO!!! Y U CRASH!!!" Luckily, this has not been happening to me though.

P.S.

Wondrous phrase created by the one and only, ME!

It makes me angry when I do extremely well in an invasion (like I probably earned about 3000 rep), and go to jail... only to crash and find that everything is over. >:O

Stephen O'Malley 11-05-2011 04:24 AM

I haven't noticed much crashing, but certainly a lot of server lag lately. I have an 18MB connection, so I know it's nothing on my end.

Yeah, today I was leveling Dog off of the veterans, and I usually experience no lag at all, but it took about 5-10 seconds for each loot drop to show it's contents, tonics were VERY laggy, and enemies were responding weird.

POTCO Developers refuse to do weekly maintanance to remove numerous packet files constantly hogging the server tower's memory.

Geez, even a restart for the server would free up some resources, yet they never do so because that counts as a "server disruption".

They must be too worried that a simple restart can damage the whole game and others game files.

I have a high end pc and sometimes i am walking around and the game completely disappears! then the report a bug page comes up. i had no idea what happened but it says the game was experiencing issues on the log in page.

Just logged into the game today this morning, wanting to create a new pirate just for the fun of it.

Crashed after the loading screen reached 30%.

Logged in again, same steps.

Crashed after loading screen reached 30% again...

Something is wrong with the small patch they gave to the live files.

yeah... I have been getting tons of those kind of things when I crash. I have probably sent in about 15 bug reports by now. >:O

Pirates Online is always in a "crisis" state every patch.

Always problems.

Plus...

Some bugs that came up during launch still exist in the game today!!!

Why is that? They were reported, too!

List of old bugs still not fixed:

"Fast Switch" being one of them. Always had existed.

"PvP Glitch" being another. Still works to this day.

"Voodoo circle rendering" being the third I can think of. Lags you so bad when 2+ circles are surrounding allies or enemies.

HammyTheSquirrel 11-08-2011 11:43 PM

I'm getting REALLY mad because of this issue... I have already crashed about 20 times in less than half an hour. I can't even play the game anymore. >:O I think I'll try reinstalling the game and see if that changes anything. :(

EDIT: No... I will not reinstall unless it would actually work... :/ I only posted that ^^ because I was a little annoyed. @_@

Cannonfury 11-09-2011 12:39 AM

I have crashed when I try to switch to a different pirate.

Chalupa 11-09-2011 12:45 AM

I think Ice Storm is right, and the POTCO servers are just getting severely backed up. Hopefully they will reset and move at a faster pace once the new updates hit live.

HammyTheSquirrel 11-09-2011 01:01 AM

I went to Live Chat (again) and didn't get much out of it. :/ Here's the copy of it... (with Me as.. well... me ;))

info: A Technical Representative will be delivering World-Class support to you shortly. With 1 guests in queue, your wait time is expected to be 1 minutes.
info: You are now chatting with 'Chris'
Chris: Hello Me!
Me: Ahoy!
Chris: Looks like you are experiencing some latency issues?
Me: Well... some part of the issue is from my internet connection, I know... but the game is crashing a lot more than it should be, and other players I know are also crashing or getting extra lag.
Me: well... crashing more than normally.
Chris: One moment while I check our server status.
Me: okay.
Chris: Everything looks fine on this side! I suggest you check your connection matey.
Me: Hmm... would reinstalling the game change anything?
Chris: I doubt it.
Chris: If you are using any messanger services while playing (AIM, Yahoo, MSN or skype.) I would suggest shutting them down.
Me: My connection is shown at "Low", but I have played it before with that... and I tried reconnecting and it didn't change anything.
Me: The game is also sending me to the "Report a Bug" page a lot of the times I crash. I have probably sent in about 20 of those reports.
Chris: Lets take a look at one.
Chris: What is your email address?
Me: [insert said "Me"'s email]... most of them were just ones that only told you to submit the logs it had opened.. I sent about three of the ones that require a description.
Chris: I am showing that you have a firewall up.
Me: yeah
Me: the responses to those reports told me what to do to "fix" the issue...
Me: and I still had the issue after
Me: I sent in a couple of reports after I tried fixing the issue with those instructions sent to me.
Chris: I have a very high latency.
Chris: You ping is around 606.021 ms.
Chris: You may want to contact your ISP.
Me: Hmm... well we just switched to another ISP...
Chris: That may be your problem.
Chris: Contact them and ask them to run a line test.
Chris: Then make sure your speeds are what you pay for.
Me: Line test?
Chris: They will know what you are requesting.
Me: I'm still kind of confused why other people are getting similar issues.
Chris: Some people have slow connections.
Me: I mean that they are suddenly all getting the same issue at the same time as I did.
Me: the crashing and lag has suddenly increase for no obvious reason.
Chris: This is the first report I have gotten today matey.
Chris: I would contact Cogeco Cable.
Me: :/ I still do know that MANY other people are all having the same issues...
Chris: Ok, then I will speak to them when they come into live chat.
Chris: As for your issue. You have 600+ ping at times.
Chris: That high of ping will get you disconnected from Pirate Online's servers.
Me: Okay... thanks for the help anyway. :)
Chris: Also,
Chris: If you are using wireless internet.
Chris: You should try using a wired.
Chris: A wireless connection is never suggest in gaming.
Me: The problem with that is I can't move our desktop computer anywhere near the modem and router...
Me: so I can't actually get it a wired connection.
Chris: That is a real bummer.
Chris: Then you will have this issue tilll then
Me: Okay. Thanks for the help!
I'm still confused about WHY (if it is apparently MY issue) other players are getting this...

Chalupa 11-09-2011 01:33 AM

I don't know why this has been happening, but they may be hiding something just because it will be hard to explain and may take a while to explain, or maybe they just don't feel like telling why. I suggest that you follow their suggestions, but I too have been experiencing this too, and my connections haven't changed for over a year.

@ the big text:

Hahaha! This excuse again?

They blamed the ping issue on me every single time because of my "ISP", too.

This is obviously NOT an ISP problem, this is Disney's server towers recieving and registering too many packets at once/being overloaded with packets that it is time for maintenance again.

If you guys remember this notice:

Quote:

Service Notification (Update)January 31, 2011

Due to upcoming planned maintenance, Pirates Online will be taking outages on the following days and times:

February 2, 2011 - 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM Pacific Times/Los Angeles. Pirates Online will be available during this time but may experience intermittent connectivity issues.

February 7, 2011 - 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM Pacific Time/Los Angeles. Pirates Online will be unavailable.

Please pardon us as we work to improve your experience in the Caribbean.
This was the only REAL maintenance Disney has ever done for the Pirates Online game. And guess what it did...

You got it! It made Abassa ping times always 130ms or lower, playing the game from the East Coast.

Not only that but, even game actions were responding much, much quicker. I couldn't believe how much of a performance increase I got that day during a PvP match. Gosh, I was able to play "High" graphic settings while maintaining a solid 40 FPS in a 3v3 match.

That's how much the lag (ping times) disappeared after this major maintenance.

In conclusion, the tech people blaming it on you, is, most of the time, Disney slacking on their server maintenance to keep the game running at optimal download/upload speeds in retrieving/registering packets sent by our client.

By the way, they probably use Windows Server 2003 or 2005 for their towers.

And probably sharing it with the other Disney games.

Maybe it's outdated technology too. They refuse to upgrade from XP D:.

Okay... now this is rather strange,... I went online yesterday and probably leveled for about two hours, made a new pirate, and jumped around a few islands without a single crash. o_o

It was probably server-related, your computer received a different order in commands to process efficiently, or something with your connection changed/improved.

It could be many things, but these make sense in my opinion.

Chalupa 11-10-2011 11:28 PM

You could also try a wired connection, assuming you are on a wifi connection.

HammyTheSquirrel 11-13-2011 07:18 PM

Hmm... I actually think a lot of this issue is from POTCO. Everyone was fine for a few days and now they're all crashing again... and my internet is acting strange when I try to connect to sites. Could POTCO actually be affecting internet connections at all?

HammyTheSquirrel 11-13-2011 11:16 PM

Hmm... thanks to Sharky, my issue is resolved... ~_~ apparently I had to change the graphics setting to fix it. :p

Didn't you crash like 10 times today?

Captain Sharktooth 11-14-2011 03:51 AM

I'm definitely crashing more. With the browser, I maybe crashed once or twice. Now, it doesn't come as a surprise when I crash around 5 times a day.

Aye... I had been thinking about that. I was starting to remember how I would never crash while playing through the browser unless my internet started acting weird... maybe there's an issue with the launcher connecting to the internet? :O

No.

This problem started occuring after a small patch from last week or two that is causing the game:
  • To NOT load into PvP matches
  • To crash when the game is first loading up after login
  • To give you the message "There was a problem going to the destination"
  • To give you high ping times (Exceeds 1000ms at times)
  • To give no support via Live Chat for subscription refund

Man, I honestly can't believe that small patch caused so much more problems to arise. They should have did a rollback last week. It's terrible.

Platinum Pirate 01-08-2012 03:10 AM

Most curious after reading these posts, "Has the latest game update in December resolved many of these issues?"

HammyTheSquirrel 01-08-2012 07:12 AM

For my part, the lag has been reduced very much, but crashing still occurs due to newer issues with the update.

leo 01-08-2012 07:37 AM

Even with some lightspeed internet you will still lag. I have 27 mb/s download speed and 4.6 upload speed last time i checked. I checked my ping and got a line quality grade A with my ping being 14, 2 jitter and 0 pocket loss. These good results are because i pay extra for my internet. But this shouldn't even be an excuse for them because most games will run perfectly fine with anything above 2 mb/s...even when there are like 50+ people in one spot.

This site will tell you:
http://speedtest.net/

If Disney goes against your results here than you know they don't know what they are talking about.

Ice_Storm 01-09-2012 02:13 PM

Pirates_Online.exe uses bandwidth in a strange way.

I honestly can't tell if it's optimized for P2P or P2S. It can become a mess when you enter a heavy populated area. Panda 3D was never meant to run "Top Dog" on a connection. It was more for local creations.
