How do you aim grenades?
How do you aim grenades?
It has no circle like the pistol? How are you suppose to aim or know where its going? ~CLJ |
Trial and Error - that's all you've got. Make sure whatever you're aiming at has a red circle around him (on the ground), then throw a grenade, see where it lands, and adjust accordingly. It's a ridiculous system, but you do get better over time.

I dont see a circle on the ground.
oh okay....Gotcha ~CLJ |
He meant the circle under the enemies.

Yeah but theres so much stuff from grenades that help your character its worth it to lvl |
I'm up to lvl 11, but I'm still terrible at it. The only reason I've gotten this far is because when I use them on the field at Kingshead, nobody can hit me back (although I hear that's about to change, too.)
I started working on them because everyone said they were great once you got the level up enough, and the passive skills available helped in other areas, too. I'm still not convinced. |
Be sure to adjust looking up or down based on your terrain.

grenades are useful only when attacking large groups of things however sometimes grenades will not kill them on the first shot so u end up with a whole bunch of people chasing after you. if u ask me grenades at this point are pointless

Grenades actually are pretty fun when you get them to about lvl 10 or above.
The way grenades work are like using a actual weapon in real life. You have to make sure there is a circle underneath the enemy you're targeting, then click the left hand button on your mouse. Hold it down until you think it's the right ammount to hit the target. If it goes too far, don't have it's range go the same distance on the meter as last time, make it go down a little bit. If it goes too short, then measure the meater to a little above where your previous grenade went, then let it rip until you find the sweet spot. ( Most enemy's will chase after you, so it's better to have someone play a dummy for you. ) NOTE: Grenades can do damage to anything, and usually about 400 damage with only 1 point into it. ( It's great if your weapons are a bit too low to hit a lvl 34 on a Man-O-War. Just get the grenades out, and he'll be dead in no time. ) |
Unfortunately, you're not going to be able to have someone be your "bait" anymore for grenades, because there's a good chance they'll get killed.

by far the worst weapon in the game the grenades system needs tweeked many times i hit enemies it shows damge like -320 but never takes their health only time it takes health is when they are in close
and most of the time it takes from my own as well |
Actually grenades are pretty effective and do a lot of damage. I'm level 23 grenades right now.
It's important to get the feel for the meter and screen angle to adjust how far you throw. For enemies that are kinda close I drag my mouse down towards me to angle the screen and let my meter fill up to about the 2nd line. If I'm throwing further away, I'll flatten out the angle. It took a bit to get the feel for it, but now I'm fairly accurate with grenades. Also when leveling it, use it against stationary enemies. Gypsies are good if you hit them with hex shot first, then throw your grenades at them :p |
Its really unfortunate that it's so hard to use Kingshead to level grenades now. With the wide open area, and small inclines and declines, it was a GREAT place to practice and really get a feel for how to use them. I would highly recommend trying to find one or two people to heal while you train grenades out there.

I have seen that, too. A friend was training grenades at Kingshead from behind the fence and would toss one at the soldiers in the middle of the field. A few of them would then come towards the fence while a few others remained in the middle of the field. You could throw grenades at the ones left in the field over and over and you would see the damage points above their head, but their health remained intact. Not sure how often that kind of thing happens in other places, but I have seen similar happen when using the staff. I think it has something to do with the enemy disengaging. If they become disengaged then, for whatever reason, you cant kill them from a distance. |
I have found that if you're level with an enemy navy dude, aiming right at their chest is the spot to hit.
Also to level, i just go to cuba and attack the fly traps. Got my grenades up to level 4 in a short time. |
I'm having some problems also. I'm starting to figure out how to aim them, but it's still much harder than any of the other weapons. Plus, I can see that sometimes if one goes off near an enemy, the red damage numbers will float above it's head, yet the health bar doesn't go down. It seems like you pretty much have to hit the target dead on. That takes away some of the benefit of a grenade, which is supposed to hurt without a direct hit.

As for the area-effect of the nade itself, different nades have different damage areas, in regards to size. The basic nade has a fairly small damage area, whereas the Stink Pot has probably twice the size area-effect. The Fire bomb has a smaller blast radius than the Stinker, but seems to be slightly larger than the basic nade. Haven't tried Smoke or Siege yet.......it's bloody troubling getting leveled with these things. :piratetongueor4: |
I worked on my grenades the other day at Kingshead. You go in the door of the fort.. and immediately go in to the fenced area. You can stay in that area and hit the guys from the fort door ... all the way up to the officers that hang around that inner entrance way. If you dont get close to the fence.. you are completely safe and dont get touched at all. Its good to have a friend that can come and sit the area for you so you can buy more grenades and tp back to them.

For me, grenades became easier to aim once I added some skill points to the "Long Volley" skill.
I think you also need to get the hang of using your mouse to adjust your camera angle. If you give yourself more of an overhead view, it seems to help with aiming shorter throws. |
I just got my grenades yesterday. They´re hard to adjust to, yes. It would be better that you hold the button and then there is an aiming circle just like that of the gun that begins to blink once you have held it long enough. If you do not release after a given time, then you will throw the grenade too far. If you release it when it starts to blink, it will throw it the distance the enemy is.
