Mafia Returns?

Dear POF Administrators and Moderators of All sizes and colors,

I address you all with nothing more than the utmost respect. My name is The Skirata Clan, maybe you have heard of me. I wish to propose the Return of one of POF's biggest traditions, The Mafia Game.

I remember what happened last time. But I believe that The POF Members have learned their lessons. Proof of that was the honesty and Fair Play during the last contests that you guys have so gallantly put together to entertain all of us here at POF.

One of the reasons I joined and remained a member of POF for so long was The Mafia Game.

I boldly request the return of such a Staple of this wonderful site that I call Home.
Sincerely and with the respect that you all deserve,

The Skirata Clan.

If I may I ask, what is The Mafia Game?

Cannonfury 04-03-2011 03:54 AM

I loved that game... they would have to start it and explain it all for u to know..I cant explain it lol

The Skirata Clan 04-03-2011 04:23 AM

For those of you who have never heard of Mafia. Here's how that game was played.

Mafia Rules & Instructions

Jack Shipsteel 04-03-2011 04:43 AM

Are there any threads of the game available for viewing? Or have they been deleted?

The Skirata Clan 04-03-2011 05:20 AM

Mafia was so cool and awesome that it got a special Sub-Forum just for it. It comes out only for Mafia and after the game is over it just goes into hiding.

SEAKING23 04-03-2011 06:11 AM

It does look quite fun. I hope the mods will start it up again :)

The Stealthy Pirate 04-03-2011 02:04 PM

This looks interesting. I see why you want to bring it back.

Jack I 04-03-2011 04:11 PM

I realize that for quite some time there has been hope for the Mafia game to return as a contest here on POF, but I'm afraid to say that there is currently not an outlook for the game to return. I do agree that, at least from my point of view, enough time has passed that I feel we could attempt another shot at the game, but there are other issues to be had.

First off, another GM would need to be trained to run mafia, as we've always allowed for two in the event that the lead GM was not around. At this time I am the only member of the staff left that actively participated in running Mafia, and I am too busy with school and other things to actively moderate and run the Mafia forums and such. Just as well, I had begun a reworking of the rules and what not but have never had time to finish such work for the same reasons.

I realize this may come as a disappointment to some, and I do apologize. I enjoyed Mafia just as much as everyone that participated surely did, and I would have loved to see it return later on. At this point though we just don't have the hands or the needs necessary to restart.

On a side note for those who asked what Mafia was, if you follow the link that Skirata posted above, you'll find information on the game and how it is played.

The Skirata Clan 04-03-2011 09:47 PM

Thank you Mr. Ironbones AKA Jack I.

At least there is hope that someday down the road we can enjoy Mafia once more.

Hookshot 04-03-2011 10:00 PM

This really sounds like a fun game. I am a bit confused on exactly what happened for there to be a ban on this game. I hope that things can be worked out fairly because it would be a lot of fun to try this game out. Thank you.

There was serious violation on the game rules. Which ended in people being angry at the Mods and Mods being angry at the people. It was a BIG mess that we all have left behind. There was no winners, only everyone lost. We all got a participation award at the end.

Tiberius Fireskull 04-03-2011 10:27 PM

Err... I know I have never done this, but would it be possible to have someone other than a POF staff member run it? I mean, there are plenty of people here who know how it worked, such as our dear Skirata here, and I'm sure there are people that would be more than willing to help out in it. Even if we didn't get the award for it, I'm sure there are people that could organize it. Although if a POF staff member must run it, then I understand, but I'm just throwing this out there.

Batleth 04-04-2011 12:15 AM

We might consider it if a set of rules could be created to prevent the amount of cheating and rule breaking that was going on before. I think we can all agree that we want a fun and fair game. Not let's see how creative we can be to cheat, game.

Hookshot 04-04-2011 12:31 AM

I'd be willing to help prevent cheating. Maybe have a Mafia Mod who just looked over possible cheating. Would it help if I offered myself to try to get this game up and running so that cheating would not take place?

The Skirata Clan 04-04-2011 12:44 AM

Garfieldo and Jack I were the Mafia Mods. I thank Davy for thinking I might be worthy of such task, but no. I want to play.

I agree with my Star Trek friend, on the whole cheating thing. The thing that affected the game was PM's and Outside of POF communication. In fact I'd be OK with PM blockage if there is such a thing and temporary deletion of that contact info.

Swash 04-04-2011 01:08 AM

If the mods do decide to bring back Mafia, then count me in! On a side note does anyone remember who played the very first game of Mafia on POF? I know I was there, but who else played?

The Skirata Clan 04-04-2011 03:18 AM

I don't know. I was in Round 2 and 3.

Captain Del 04-04-2011 03:27 AM

I, unfortunately, never got the chance to participate in Mafia, but it did always seem like a fun event. It is unfortunate that some people had to cheat in order to try and get somewhere, but I'm almost positive that we would be able to rework the game in order to prevent any sort of tipping off (aside from blocking PMs - that could be a major problem for urgent means of communication between pirates.)

If it does come to the day where people are needed to help run the Mafia, I would be more than glad to put my talents to use. But, otherwise.... well, let's just say I've seen Goodfellas way too many times to be trusted. Watch yer back, kiddos

Well, you got the Iron part right. :laughks2:

As for those discussing the issue of people to run mafia, in the previous 3 rounds we had 2 moderators running the contest, myself and Garfieldo. I had to be taught how to run the game over the first round and essentially sit back and watch. It is something quite confusing to be taught at first, and I'm lucky to have picked up on it as easy as I did. On top of that, you have to be able to be here for the entire event and keep a close eye on everything. I have always said and still admit that part of the issue with Mafia round 3 was on my behalf. I planned the event and took charge, and issues came up that left me only able to check in every now and again. We're all human, mistakes will be made, but we must learn from them.

I've already said there need to be at least 3 GMs this time around just for good measure, and they would all need to be existing POF mods. While the offers are kind, it is easier and overall just more convenient if those running the event are already on the staff. That way, no-one else has to be sought out to moderate, and they'll already have the means necessary to run the Mafia game as it should be run.

It all does come down to the cheating issue though. There was just far too much of it in the last contest, and it had to be stopped. As I said, I had started working on a rework of the rules and lost the time to work on them, but if there is that much of an interest in having another round of Mafia I will look into finding some time to work on new rules. That being said I still will not, for my own account and the better of Mafia, return to GM another round. I've run my course and feel that it would be better suited in the hands of a more active group of moderators. :mickeypiratezd4:

Ironmalley!

I am sorry, I have been calling you Ironbones... Which makes me question where I got that from.

You did an awesome job last time around. It was in no way shape or from your fault. The ending was shaky. I wasn't to happy about the Turtle. I don't want to know where that idea came from. :buds:

CaptainMonkeys 04-04-2011 02:00 PM

I, too, wish we had the chance to play Mafia again. It's such a wonderful game, and I'm pretty sure these members can understand cheating will make a game such as this go away forever.

Toby is the magical sea turtle that we hide away on between Mafia and Mod Hunts. You cannot discover a moving uncharted sea turtle the way you can a stationary uncharted island. :psmiley35:

So, is this game going to come back? It looks quite fun and I have played it before in real life. (just with mafia and a detective) Maybe we could have a vote on who would be the third Mafia Mod, aye?

Jack I 04-05-2011 01:29 AM

As we've previously stated, that would be up to the administration and moderation staff whether or not we return, on the basis of if we can allow for a new set of rules that is virtually fool-proof. There will be loopholes, there are always loopholes, but we would hope to have as few as possible and expect them to not be exploited. Those who did attempt to exploit them would be punished and most likely have future contest privileges removed for a set time.

As for the third Mafia mod, that would again be up to the administration and moderation. We would want to know that the person is actually willing to take up the role as a GM and had the time and experience to do it. Besides, you need all 3. Garfieldo is Hall of Famed, I am Semi-HOF, and we never had a third to begin with. The want for Mafia to return is a reality that we do see, but there is a lot of time and work to be put into it before it can be ready to return.

Swash 04-05-2011 04:01 AM

I remember it worked out so well the first time. The navy only lost 2 members, and 1 was because of inactivity. I don't remember any cheating with it, but the game worked out good. If a 4th round is ever planned, then I'd like to play. I have faith in the staff and Jack that someday Mafia will be played again on POF.

The Skirata Clan 04-05-2011 04:45 AM

It seems I opened a can of worms... SorrO!

Captain Sharktooth 04-06-2011 03:54 AM

This would be very fun and cool to play. It would be nice to see it return. I used to play this game with a bunch of my friends all the time a while ago and I liked it a lot, it was always one of my favorite games to play.

EDIT: If I remember correctly from playing with my friends there are "bonuses" or whatever they're called such as Guardian Angel or Detective. Did you guys have those?

There is a doctor who can save a person from the mafia, and a cop who can guess a person that's in the mafia, and if they guess wrong then that person they guessed is removed.

Jack I 04-07-2011 01:23 AM

We usually had 7-8 made up for each round of mafia, divided about 4-5 or the pirates then 2-3 for the mafia depending on the size of the group we played that round. We had designed quite the interesting ones too, but I can't give any details of them. We like to re-use a few (because clearly they're the best ones), and I wouldn't want to spoil them if we play another round.

Captain Sharktooth 04-07-2011 01:27 AM

Swash, yes that was what I was talking about but with different names.

It would be really fun to play again then and see the other titles for different members of the game. I would be epic at this, since I have played it so much... just not on here.

swashbuckler1 04-09-2011 10:18 AM

may i join in if they bring it back??? i read all the rules. and it sounds rly rly fun
