The Word "Noob"

Ok, so i have been having a bigger issue with his problem. The other day, I was at Darkhart Abassa and this guy said that he had every single legendary weapon. I said I didn't believe him, very nicely, and he started to flip out on me, calling me a noob about 10 times. I hate when people do this so I was going to ignore him. BUT, then he said something really immature and childish; "see Jack, this is why you don't get dates." Then, his friend joined in saying "everybody, Jack is a noob!" I reported both these people.

Next, I was at Tormenta using sword and this guy started to call me a noob. I ignored him but then he left so I just un-ignored him. He came back and, knowing that he was trouble, left. On my way back I saw a level 50 ( the guy calling me a noob was 46 ) and was going to the place I was just at. I was at the bridge, they were at the Treasure Room, so I could hear them. The same guy called the 50 a noob repeatedly, even though he was a much higher level. Also, the 50 was GM of one of the most respected guilds. Me and the 50 both reported him.

Was I right to report them? If not, tell me why. Second, I don't even know if they got in trouble. Third, I suggest that, like in ToonTown, the word Noob is turned into Arr. Fourht, if you have any stories like these, feel free to post them!

Captain Del 03-09-2011 12:18 AM

If they were acting in such a rude manner towards you, then you and that other pirate had full right to report those pirates. Just because the word "noob" is so commonly used, that doesn't automatically make it acceptable to throw it around at others, nor does it mean people won't get offended if you use it.

In short, yes, you handled that very well. Reporting and walking away was the smart thing to do in the situation, and I applaud you for that. :)

The Stealthy Pirate 03-09-2011 12:21 AM

I think it was a good idea to report those first two guys. Those guys made fun of you in front of (what i imagine) a lot of people... That is just isnt nice my friend.

As for the second, if the guy added on to the noob stuff, then im not so sure, and he probably didnt know who the GM was...

Anyway, I do agree with you on the last sentence.

EDIT: If the third guy did know who the GM and/or who you were, then I would defintely done what you did. I agree with you on both accounts, why they did is a mystery...

Pirate Guy 03-09-2011 12:25 AM

Thanks for the feedback. I understand that the guy mi9ght not have know who the GM was, but he still should have realized that the GM was 4 levels higher than him. I think that most people who use the word noob don't know what it means.

The Stealthy Pirate 03-09-2011 12:29 AM

Here is a little personal story:

When I was in my early levels/teens, a random guy (whom i forget the name) walked up to me and called me a noob. I was shocked and curious to what this word noob meant. At first, I thought it meant stupid person... I thought about reporting the guy, but at the time, ( i dont know if they still have this) it said if you reported without reason/bad reason, they would ban you from POTCO. So i ended up not reporting.

Captain Sharktooth 03-09-2011 12:30 AM

Smart move walking away, reporting and ignoring them. Some people just want attention, and do whatever it takes to get it. In that case, it was acting immature and childish. Even if the lvl 50 wasn't the GM of the respected guild, you still shouldn't call anyone noobs. The word noob is severely being used way out of context. It means, newbie. As in, a new player to the game. Even if someone is only a couple levels behind you, (like a 50 and a 47) they still aren't a noob, because they aren't new to the game. I hope to try and avoid these confrontations with these types of players in the future....

titanic95594 03-09-2011 12:31 AM

Kids. They are just jealous. Try to advoid the A servers mate!

SEAKING23 03-09-2011 12:57 AM

Mate, just becuase they are kids don't mean they are trolls! A lot of kids are here on POF and they are really nice. And a lot of nice people are on the A servers. sometimes i hang around there and chat with random people.

Noob should just turn into arr, like pirate guy said. also, you should be able to say newb, cause i don't see the point of taking out noob, and not letting you use newb.

Captain Celtics 03-09-2011 01:00 AM

Only thing I get out of this is that a guy who gets back at people through an online game certainly doesn't get dates.

Mr. Awesome 03-09-2011 01:10 AM

When people call me noob or other names I just ignore them, why? because they dont know me! Simple as that.

pieisbetter2 03-09-2011 01:11 AM

^^^ True THAT!

Tiberius Fireskull 03-09-2011 01:20 AM

CC, that's really funny. Mainly because its true.

Now, to what you said. I usually don't get called noob. Mostly people call me other names. Once I was even called fat fingers. I was literally laughing out of my seat, it was that funny! Fat Fingers! Who says THAT?! Ahem, anyway, I have been called noob sometimes. Best thing to do is exactly what you did. You can simply walk away and report/ignore. Or you can do what some people do (including me). You can see if you can outsmart them and them make them walk away not knowing what happened, and you don't even say anything mean. Some of you may have seen some of my examples on other threads. Although that's much harder, and takes some practice. As I said, you did the right thing.

And yes, it would be good for Noob to be turned into Arrr. Maybe newb too, because that's just getting around the filter.

SEAKING23 03-09-2011 01:31 AM

fast fingers? you really gotta cut down on that fast food mate!:laughks2::laughks2:

I'm kinda confused. I've been told to out smart them, then an officer tells me to ask them nicely to stop, then just report them.

Tiberius Fireskull 03-09-2011 02:02 AM

SEAKING, if you can outsmart them, that's usually what I prefer to do. But if it gets into an insult off, thats when I leave. I don't be mean back, I simply make rebuttals to all of their insults. I believe that Witchdoctor Dan calls it word fencing? I personally like that tactic as long as you aren't the one who ever throws an insult. Of course, the simplest and probably the best way is to just report and leave. There are many methods.

And it was FAT fingers. Not fast.

bartholomew bladeroberts 03-09-2011 02:20 AM

Once two people were arguing calling each other a noob before an invasion meanwhile I was trying to strategize then they brought me into it calling me a noob and each other a noob so then I replied no one is a noob then they kept at it so I reported them

Captain Jason 03-09-2011 02:38 AM

You did the right thing, especially since I would've probably gotten all of the Thralls to attack him at once. Your way probably works better :D

Captain Lightflame 03-09-2011 02:45 AM

ok the truth of the matter is i was in gold room in toromenta for 3 days straigh i was on a very quiet server when these rude players came asking constently to crew them when i want to be alone and then they start shooting at all the kills i was making so then the skull chest came and they said wow they got some swords famed and whatever i payed no heed to them then they said your a noob your a noob and i said yopur mother is calling u ur late for dinner! then i hit all the creatures at once and i ran fast up the hill and they all got passed down and they need tonics and i said that what u get for calling me now im not answering u help cry.

Pirate Guy 03-09-2011 04:02 AM

Lightflame, the thing is if someone is calling you a noob, don't respond. They're just bullies. If you responded they get what they want and they win.

Also, I have called people noobs before. Not in a bad way though. If I'm friends with someone and they get knocked out or something I can call them a noob and they will laugh about it. I think that if you're friends then it's ok.

The Skirata Clan 03-09-2011 05:27 AM

I use the term Noob with friends and never in an insulting way.

Hookshot 03-09-2011 08:26 AM

Out smarting is a mature, yet sly, sneaky, and unexpectedly hilarious way to make people think about what they've said. Is it not funny to the rest of you guys that so many people call others "noobs" but almost almost always are a level 5 basic speedchat? I'm sorry but if you're going to make fun of me, please have some facts to back it up. Haha. End rant.

titanic95594 03-09-2011 02:07 PM

Well at least we have common sense if that narrows it down. You may not know if they are actually offending you though. Noob = new. Depends on how its used.

Hookshot 03-09-2011 03:55 PM

Well sadly most times it's either used offensively or taken offensively so not sure (unless you aren't on abassa :P) that there is a "joking" manner of the word. But I understand, it's like calling someone a name in real life. You need to be sure you're joking because the person you're name-calling to just might take the "slang" or "hurtful words" to heart and you can get in real trouble for that sort of thing. It's abuse. And when you're on pirates and someone is name calling like that, saying you don't get dates, whether it's serious or not... ITS A FORM OF CYBER-BULLYING! so that's why I don't use the term "noob" no matter how it's used.

Pirate Guy 03-09-2011 11:16 PM

Aye Hookshot. If RL if you call your best friend a name, they will laugh about it. If you go up to a random stranger and say the name, it will be considered an offense.

Olgarlenn 03-09-2011 11:55 PM

I just really don't care much about an just laugh at those people they have nothing else to do but call people noobs behind a computer screen. I dont mind being callled a noob it doesn't really hurt but thats just me

Pirate Guy 03-10-2011 01:04 AM

I don't really care about being called a noob. But, when I get flooded with NOOB! especially on my 50, that's when it gets annoying. I play the game to have fun, not be attacked by trolls.

Hookshot 03-10-2011 07:51 AM

Exactly mate. And this is what I based my guild off of, the fact that this is a game. And what are we paying to do? Get bullied by people who don't know what theyre taking about? No, we pay to play and have fun with people who we want to share our free time with. I'm sorry, but the people who are making fun of others in this manner need to knock it off. It's not what I (usually) pay for.

Pirate Guy 04-06-2011 11:44 PM

Aye Hookshot, I think that people need to realize that they're are making this game worse for everyone else by doing this.

James Sunsteel 04-07-2011 12:53 AM

In my opinion, you did the right thing. Also, i've never reported someone because my friend told me if you report someone, YOU get banned too. Once I was in cursed caverns I just wanting to lvl grenades and this guy comes up and says: "sup noob" I replied by saying "Please don't call me that, I just want to level grenades." He kept calling me noob and I got annoyed. So I say "I will report you" I use that as a threat. He said "I dont care" s0 I said "How about we lower the vilonce and PvP" He said okay and I kicked the daylights out of him and he kept calling me noob so I left the server. Please tell me if reporting is safe. P.S. The server Galaira is a bad server to go to to level stuff because most ppl r mean. That might not apply to you.

Davy_Mcwrecker 04-07-2011 02:18 AM

And from then on, POTCO realized that the word "n00b" was bad and the banned. Everyone lived piraty ever after.

So wish that was tue ;)

Pirate Guy 04-07-2011 02:21 AM

Same here Davy, they really should do that.

Dog Gunmorgan 04-07-2011 04:36 AM

I've noticed that people have become more and more rude lately. when I started playing in around 07 the game was a lot different I spent a long time without a guild but when I started people where much much nicer to others I remember being able to stand on abassa tortuga and actually have a good time talking to random people and if you ever needed help you just asked and you would have a huge group of people WANTING to help you. and need guild members? go into the kings arm do the old glitch too get behind the front counter with the boxes behind it and stand with a thought bubble with you're guild and reasons people should join... when I ran a guild back then called "Dog's Daggers" I got many good members that way... if you did that now you would get nothing but terribly rude guild hoppers and if you ask for help you get called a noob even though it might be a pirate you just started when you have a level 50 or even a lot of level 50s you still get called a noob because they don't bother to learn anything about you before the judge you for being a low level.

it really makes me sad to see that you can't really start a crew with random people anymore because one of them is bound to be the classic Abassa pirate we've all come to dislike

we need to get back to the way it was in 07-08

Tiberius Fireskull 04-07-2011 06:16 AM

This was said in another thread in different wording:

The community was smaller back then. Let's say the ration of good to bad pirates was 5:1. There were less people over all, so there would be less rude people, and you would be less likely to encounter them. Now, since the game has grown, that ratio has probably gotten bigger too, perhaps its 15:5. More people have joined the game, meaning more people that are rude have joined, so there are simply just a larger portion of rude people.

(Now this is my message) Also, people probably think that just because they are anonymous, they can do whatever the blazes they please. I'm not gonna lecture, because you've all heard it, but they just think its funny to harass others when they know they won't get more than a ban. There is really nothing that POTCO can do to help rude people. Just have that report button there so that they can (hopefully) get that ban they deserve. And maybe they should make it so that if you are permabanned on POTCO, no new accounts can be made coming from that IP address.

As for Noob being filtered... lets not. Honestly, its a pretty lame insult. I don't think that I've ever called someone a noob in the recent past as an insult. Its actually kinda funny when they say it. Its like back in Elementary School when someone called you stupid. They would just use that insult because it was mean and they couldn't think of anything better. Same idea with noob here. If they call you that, just say something like "So desperate to come up with an insult that you call me a noob, eh? At least use your brain and think of something a bit more creative." Noob is a pathetic insult, used by mainly pathetic people. Just ignore it and report. Not much else to do.

Sorry I droned on... I just wanted to say all that stuff.

Mr. Awesome 04-07-2011 07:54 AM

Somebody called me a noob and I told Him I heard better insults from sock puppets:laughks2:. Hey its a disney site what else could I have said?:laughks2:

Pirate Guy 04-07-2011 08:26 AM

I do see your point Davy, I would miss calling my friends noobs. But lets be honest, if they did ban the word noob, couldn't people just say n00b, nuub, or nuouououb ( :D ) ? I suppose now I take away wanting it to be filtered.

Dark_Pixie 05-08-2011 05:00 PM

I hate that word. I've had an experience like those on two separate occasions.

The first one was at Darkhart Abassa (I realise the error of my ways). I was happily fighting, in a good mood, when I noticed this guy. I made a little joke about his name, I think he found it funny, but this other guy came along and started saying in capitals that my joke was 'hurtful' and I should 'apologise'. I said that the guy didn't really mind, because he was already LOLing. The guy just kept on, telling me to say sorry and stuff. This guy was trying to be the boss of me. I said sorry anyway, because I was sick of him. Then he started insulting me, calling me a fartbag (and a noob), and the other guy joined in too. I reported them both and left.

The second one was a lot more offensive. I was on my little character at Neban (Abassa), about level 8 or so, and I was getting rep, being revived when I was knocked out, which was nice of the guys fighting there. Then this guy joined up and noticed me being constantly knocked out. He started calling me a noob and refusing to revive me. I told him that this wasn't my main character. Naturally he didn't believe me. This nicer guy kept reviving me and telling the guy that he shouldn't say those things, regardless of level. I got sick of it and went onto Misty and to find him, but by the time I'd got to Neban he'd scarpered. :laughks2:

What has Pirates come to?

HammyTheSquirrel 05-09-2011 12:39 AM

Quote:

Then he started insulting me, calling me a fartbag
What??? Fartbag??? LOL! That is messed. I absolutely HATE that word. I actually prefer Newbie other than NOOB because of the key word here... "New"bie. If a level 50 calls my level 36 a noob (or newbie to be exact), he is badly mistaken. Even if a pirate is level 10, they aren't much of a newbie, they probably have been playing at least two or three weeks at level 10, and the game is the cause for low levels and low level pirates dying more easily. Thankfully, I haven't really had too many incidents, but i have had a few VERY annoying ones. I was at Darkhart on Andaba once and i was leveling my staff. I was using Desolation? Anyway,... probably since i was a "Noob" (likely level 32 or 33 at the time), this guy with nearly all of his weapons mastered and around level 45-49 was calling me a "rep stealer" for using Desolation on darkhart (which is kinda weird because that attack on Darkhart is equal to Blade Storm on a level 25 enemy for me). He told me to use a weaker attack, so i used Whither or something like that... but i'm pretty sure he kept getting "mad" at me. I checked his levels on the player card and told him that i'm not a "rep stealer" if he is using a mastered weapon. After that, another guy there started annoying me too. I think more people came and it stopped or... actually, a girl told him to go to another server, but i just decided to go to Abassa or to a friend rather than let it go on.

I've also had a similar yet not so similar experience to Dark Pixie's "Neban" experience... I was on a privateering island and there happened to be many others there. I was "killing" all of the privateers from that island because i was from the opposite side. So I ended up blowing myself up with a grenade and then I was revived and i tried a glitch that involved Desolation and some grenades... died again. None of the higher level pirates would revive me. :D My fault I guess. I think they were calling me a noob though and were getting mad at me for no reason (other than grenades).

Oh... I know this is random, but... Captain Trench or another GM was at King's Arm after an invasion and (speaking of grenades) told me that the bar owner might not be very pleased to see people throwing grenades in his bar (I was throwing A LOT of grenades). hehe told you it was random.:laughks2:

Davy_Mcwrecker 05-09-2011 02:32 AM

I also hate it when people who are level ones are calling level 50' s noobs. Sure if their a level 20 and the lv1 is the second pirate, but calling a level 50 is just pulling a prank on your self. :P

Solomon O 05-09-2011 05:13 AM

I hate people like these. They look for any reason to call a person a noob.

I am lvl 42. I get called noobs by level 2.
Eg
They Whisper "Hey, Noob, Let me use your ship"
Usually I ignore these sorts of people because it drives them insane. They deserve it. But then some people take it over the top.
Eg
I am at Folberto. I wasnt there to fight, I was healing people. At some poitn this person got knocked out. I revived him. A lvl 20 started calling me a noob for reviving the person. Whats up with that? After that I started fighting against Foulberto. Everytime I got knocked out he would yell "Dont Heal Solomon!" But I always do get healed.

Dark_Pixie 05-09-2011 05:20 PM

That guy was a lower level than me as well! :laughks2: Can't stand it when people assume what they don't know.

Hammy's random story made me imagine if a GM called someone a noob. :piratetongueor4:

Captain Hector 05-14-2011 04:37 PM

"dont get dates..." immature. i agree. im not saying you didnt ask them to stop, but, this is probably what i would do
1. ask them to stop nicely.
2. if they dont stop, warn them of reporting.
3. ignore the player
4., if you other people getting mad, report him/her.

I remember, my friend, Phishytwonya, he was doing a PvP against someone and the other person called him a noob bc he thought Phishy was cheating. Phishy just has very good swordsmanship. i think that Noob-callers should just have to learn what is proper and mature.

Leo Dampskull 05-19-2011 03:36 AM

To me the word Noob means Never Owned Or Beaten... I made it mine so when I am called it I say, yeah your right I am a noob... It's just a word and we own them, not the other way around...
