Names are non-unique??

I got an awesome name for my secondary character approved the first day, because I KNEW it would be taken (Dread Pirate Roberts) now I finally got on that character and I found someone else with the same name! That's not cool... Either someone has the same name as me, or I have some weird bug where I see my name over someone else... Which is it?

Well, at least his character looks old, while mine looks like Wesley (if you don't understand, don't ask) so I can pretend that he's the old DPR and I'm the new...

MariaSeaMorgan85 11-06-2007 06:07 AM

That's a good question. I have never seen anyone with my same name on any of the servers. But, who knows? I am leaning more towards it being possible for two people to have the same name. Creating a unique pirate name might be difficult considering how many people play the game.

happy plundering!

Sarah 11-06-2007 11:47 AM

I agree, prpbably possible to have several pirates with the same names. At least you look different :)

Oh, and look out for the Rodents Of Unusual Size, heehee, great name!

Shabby_Skipper 11-06-2007 12:46 PM

Lol, nice choice. You might see Indigo Montoya running around next! And instead of Undead Pirates they should be Mostly Dead Pirates!

DreadPireateRoberts 11-06-2007 08:09 PM

It's me, it's me. (of course, I fat fingered the name for the forums). Dread was my second choice, since my first was taken. If Dread was taken I was going to try Edward Teach or some other real pirate.

Looking at my name on the post I'm shaking my head and laughing at my mistype.

Silver Beard 11-06-2007 08:48 PM

DreadPirEATeRoberts? that sounds weird...

I noticed that there were people with the same name...like i see Elizibeth in the morning and then Elizibeth in the evening.

funny thing is I just noticed my typo this morning when I finally finished the activation. maybe I'll fix, who knows.

In game it's correct, Dread Pirate Roberts.

Gabyta 11-07-2007 01:03 AM

hehe I saw a lot of Bucaneers and Pirates ;)

Rob 11-07-2007 01:40 AM

I assume this is a bug and needs to be reported. You cannot have people with similar names running around an online game. Reason being when a player is reported for abuse, the pirate name is given. If, for example, you have 20 Dread Pirate Roberts running around and one is reported, there is no way for POTC admin to determine which is which that received the complaint.

Not to mention, it is greatly confusing when whispered as who is who. I have to assume it is a bug and needs to be fixed ASAP.

If you want a unique name, make your name 'I'llCleanYourShipIfYouPayMe'. I tried that, and they didn't accept it... but who knows?

I think those are the names they assign when the custom names are still waiting to be approved.

Goldfish 11-07-2007 11:57 PM

Well at least mine is original (goldfish)..

Unless you've seen somebody who doesn't look like an asian grandpa and is named goldfish..

Colombiano 11-08-2007 01:35 AM

I really hate how people copy other names. It <irritates me> big time. Now if it was from the randomizer then I really wouldn't care because chances are that it could be picked again BUT if I typed it in and another person took it I would be <irritated>. It is just wrong......

billieboi 11-28-2007 03:11 PM

I'm guessing that names are not unique. The reason I think this is because you need to click on a person to befriend them. You cant merely type their name in. The only reasoning I can think of to support this would be that there could be more than one person with a name.

WizardHawk 11-28-2007 04:16 PM

Doesn't disney allow the same name on toontown? I'm almost sure they do which would mean they intended to do the same here.

NannerFL 11-28-2007 05:02 PM

Yes in Toontown you can have the same name as others so assume it's the same on POC?

Thalore 11-28-2007 06:22 PM

It makes sense when you think about it...

Just because all the other silly MMO's save all your character data using your character name as the key, doesn't make it right.

Wouldn't it suck if we couldn't have the same names in real life :laughks2:

"Sorry miss you can't name your child John X, cause some guy in New Mexico already did!"

Grim Lightning Gate 11-30-2007 06:18 AM

Chosing a name like that hardly classifies as unique, there are bound to be many people that know about it.
To say you are the first is also a bit silly.

I see Dread Pirate this, Dread Pirate that, Dread Pirate so and so; At least once a day.
There is also a guild named Dread Pirates if I recall.

Great name, but expect others to use it too.

gigarichard 11-30-2007 11:17 PM

I would wish they would approve the names already. I am stuck as "Pirate" and I am a little tired of being addressed as a newer player because of a title.

I had a toon that went nameless for 7 months, the give-away that he wasn't new was his laff and gags.
Might I suggest the same thing, if you haven't already. :D
Just up your Notoriety and weapons and ignore the "children" that think that you are new.

GL with the name!
