Savvy Swashbucklers - April 09, 2010

Savvy Swashbucklers
April 09, 2010

Thar be no finer collection of rascals, knaves and scoundrels than the Pirates sailing our Caribbean! Whether it be beating back Jolly Roger's invasions or evading Beckett's EITC forces, all you Pirates have shown extraordinary skill by combining your individual strengths in defending the Caribbean against our evil foes.

We want to recognize the Pirates who always lend a helping hand, and demonstrate great courage and outstanding wit in the face of any ferocious challenge the Caribbean has to offer. If you know a Pirate (even it be yerself!) with a stout heart and able mind who never shies away from danger and upholds the Pirates Code, let us know by voting for them! Whoever gets the most votes will be recognized as being the savviest Pirate in the Caribbean - a true Savvy Swashbuckler!

Sending us your votes is simple. E-mail us at [email protected]. with the subject line, "Savvy Swashbucklers" and include the following information:
  • Name and level of the Pirate you are voting for
  • The Guild the Pirate belongs to
  • Reason why you think this Pirate deserves to win. Are they wittier than Jack Sparrow himself? Do they go out of their way to help others the same way Will Turner would? Does this Pirate show no fear in the face of Jolly Roger's invasions? Are their jokes the talk of the tavern? Tell us their tale!
  • Which island can we find this Pirate on if we want to go sailing with them

The voting runs from April 9th - 30th. All entries will only be accepted through e-mail so make sure you are sending your votes to [email protected]. with the subject line, "Savvy Swashbucklers".
Help us is giving a mighty "Yo, Ho, Ho!" salute to the fine Pirates in the Caribbean and start sending in those votes!

Pirate J 04-09-2010 07:40 PM

This will be enjoyable but i doubt i will get any votes :-(

gingeeann 04-09-2010 07:43 PM

:laughks2:Hurray an old fashioned popularity contest just like when I was in middle school and about 12 years old.... oh wait minute Disney POTCO is geared toward that age group.... Glad they keep reminding me of that fact:mybadki6:

Eliza Creststeel 04-09-2010 07:47 PM

Actually, I did vote... but I voted with my heart for a dear mate who loves this game and has been an amazing asset.

It doesn't always have to degrade to pure popularity.

Though I do wish they'd pick more than 1 person to honor.

Li Wildtimbers 04-09-2010 07:54 PM

I agree with what Eliza said. Tis be an honor to have more than one pirate to keep hard feelings down bc they werent picked.

The Evil Will Mcbain 04-09-2010 08:03 PM

Well, I'm voting for myself. Seems like the piratey thing to do.

Pirate J 04-09-2010 08:29 PM

Do we win anything?

Cannonfury 04-09-2010 09:27 PM

Disney rules state

Rule against " Favoritism Posts/Polls

This includes posts that indicates "Who's the best poster, player, character", etc. These often lead to confrontations when a person expresses a negative opinion about another person. "

Disney fails....
Biased:

Bias is a term used to describe a tendency or preference towards a particular perspective, ideology or result, when the tendency interferes with the ability to be impartial, unprejudiced, or objective. In other words, bias is generally seen as a 'one-sided' perspective. The term biased refers to a person or group who is judged to exhibit bias. It is used to describe an attitude, judgment, or behavior that is influenced by a prejudice. Bias can be unconscious or conscious in awareness. Having a bias is part of a normal development. Labeling someone as biased in some regard implies they need a greater or more flexible perspective in that area, or that they need to consider more deeply the context.

BlackBeard101 04-09-2010 09:33 PM

Lame lame lame! I can't believe POTCO staff has been working on this " popularity " contest, instead of working on getting the new updates on the live server. This is really pushing the limits.

Jamesvsthekraken 04-09-2010 09:37 PM

Um excuse me Maria but not to point out the obvious but Disney did not fail they are just adding more exciting new news and stuff which is great. This is Pirates Online Forums therefore we would not be here if it wasnt for this awesome game we now know as Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean Online. Why do you have to go out and post POF rules and be mean like that geez.

james, I said they fail because disney just broke THEIR own rule :)

Zilly 04-09-2010 10:05 PM

I was unable to find a Disney rule regarding favoritism. While POF has a rule against it, we don't have a thing to do with Disney's policies. Were you able to find a different source?

And while I don't particularly like a popularity-based contest, eh... Their playground, their rules. I'll just sort of roll my eyes and get back to not working grenades.

Captain Del 04-09-2010 10:06 PM

In my opinion, while this is nice and all to recognize pirates from the Caribbean, this is NOT going to be a fair contest.

Lets say, the Guildmaster of a guild, that has 500 members, asks everybody to vote for him/her. And that, basically, is right way how people are going to win. This isn't a "Savvy Swashbucklers" contest, so much as it is a popularity contest.

What about all the regular pirates who go out of their way everyday to lend a hand? The pirates nobody knows, yet are always there? Are they going to be pushed aside, so that the popular kids can win?

In the end, I hope Disney makes the right decision on who they pick. Give the regular folks a chance.

P.S. They aren't working on this instead of the content, they are doing this to distract those without Test access from the overbearing wait of the inventory release.

I clicked on site rules on POF home page...then on the page that opens under content I clicked #"1.7.11 Favoritism Posts/Polls"

while these are pof rules...disney wrote it not pof..

I think I see the confusion. POF rules were written by POF admins. Not Disney.

Bubba Bunny x 04-09-2010 11:41 PM

All I have to say is that there is WAAAAAAAY too many people that play this game and not everybody knows everyone. And I agree that this is not a fair thing to do.

The Skirata Clan 04-09-2010 11:48 PM

Vote TSC!!

Do we get to campaign for this? Vote TSC. What is the point? Vote TSC. Why would Disney have an event like this? Vote TSC.

Seriously though. Vote TSC.

Sven Osymthe 04-10-2010 12:28 AM

Lol Skirata. I don't really like the popularity contest, but i'll still vote for someone.. if I feel like it.

Individual votes don't really matter.. as others stated :D

Oh yea, so you're saying that they should not post any other news to keep Pirates on live excited, while they work on the updates on test? They obviously have to fuel some excitement in the game, instead of use seeing 'Calling All Testers' for like 4 days? I think you believe that all of them get off the computers that they're working on for the new updates, and move to one large comp where they all post the current news of some useless but fun contest ?

Captain Del 04-10-2010 02:29 PM

The guild and I came up with a pretty good idea - just elect somebody we know, or make a level 1 basic pirate and send all our votes towards him - LOL.

But in all honesty, I'm voting for somebody that I know deserves more recognition than he gets (and no, I'm not voting for myself, although it is a tempting offer :p)

Dan_OB 04-10-2010 02:41 PM

I tried to think off one person to vote for and my brain short circuited. Everyone in my guild deserves my vote as do all my friends and then there are a lot of people here who are deserving. Can't I just vote for them all? XD

LOL mate! I haven't decided if I will vote or not. I know people who I would vote for but they have multiple pirates.. so which one to pick???? IDK

So many deserve this honor..

Hey I thought that was MY idea! :laughks2:

muffin pirate 04-10-2010 10:43 PM

LOL Sven......

Dog Firestack 04-11-2010 12:01 PM

Honestly, I think this whole thing is a bad idea. It could cause people to fight for whoever to vote for and it will only help people who actually make a name for themselves. How about the people who are awesome but don't go to abassa to announce it to everyone eh? We don't know every pirate in the caribbean so that's why I'm probably not going to vote. So I choose everybody on pirates online for a vote savvy? :)

Raikel 04-12-2010 12:04 PM

Nothing but a filler from what I can tell. They are just trying to keep live away from the updates until they are completely flawless... Sadly enough, this seems to be even crappier than them old GM event where they told us we would have more weapons quest for level 25 weapons. I don't even think that they knew what we were getting. Because it looks as if they skipped over talking about those quests again to making an entirely new inventory system. So this is bound to be another load of crud, and to that, I be a pirate and drink me rum!!

Basil Dreadflint 04-12-2010 05:22 PM

If I may:

This popularity contest has absolutely nothing to do with the devs or the release of updates. It has no connection whatsoever.

This supposed 'contest' is being run by a totally different part of the Disney organization. It doesn't even have any interface to the game.

Voting is by email or PM. Nothing in the game is being used as an interface.
The Devs are software people. This is bean counting. A promotion such as this is going to be handed off to the most junior summer interns to either just sit and count the votes as they come in, or to actually read them and then "chose" a winner either by voting for the one ballot they liked best, or more realistically, they are going to chose one at random.

More than likely, this is being done by the Public Relations, or Communication, or some other department. It has absolutely nothing to do with the developers.

Should I say it again? This has nothing to do with the developers or the release of any updates.

I give Disney credit that they try things like this. Since they broke DxD last September, and haven't fixed it yet, they can't do anything like the "Best Pirating Contest" So, this at least gives them an 'event' to say that they ran one.

I just wish that they didn't do a popularity contest. Clicks and gangs are no way to run the game or a site.

I do like the idea of someone making a level 1 basic, and everyone voting for that pirate. It would be hilarious if Disney published that as the BEST pirate in the game. (But, then again, I love sarcasm.)

I'm not sure if everything is good to go yet but I logged on and the Player's Page DxD seems to be working now as far as who is on which guild, newly made pirates ect...The leaderboards there should be working unless I'm mistaken, although I still think the Enemies Defeted may still be glitched but I would have to check, the Player's Page for the most part is functional once again.

isnear 04-12-2010 08:15 PM

I think Disney is using this poll to favor who gets the Sword of Patron. For a while now, Disney coders have been trying to CONTROL their user base, that is, to stop any negative feedback from reaching their superiors. They have been doing that via a rumor mill promoted by guilds, Disney employees pretending they're just players like anyone else, and now directly through awarding those who "bow down to" Disney. i.e. The Sword of Patron.

Anyhow, we'll soon know if I am right about the gift theory.

I very seriously doubt that. If this turns out to be true, they dropped the ball with their updates. El Patron's weapons should be for EVERYONE, not just the winner of the popularity contest.

Email to disney

I am very disappointed in Disney especially POTCO. This sort of contest breeds resentment, arrogance and pettiness. You could not think of any other news this week? because your Coming soon inventory system was not soon enough?

I know you are targeting the 10 year old boy crowd, this fits with popularity contests of that age group.

I expect better from Disney , there is where I am going wrong. I should get used to expecting less. Like a Kraken Game that does not work with Vista. No 3D Glasses in mail or a start up kit for my child's account.

POTCO response
Thank you for your recent e-mail and we are sorry for any frustration or inconvenience that this news item may have caused.

We started "Savvy Swashbucklers" as a Community Event allowing Pirates all over the Caribbean to meet other Pirates that they otherwise would have never met. Please rest assured that we thoroughly research each of the nominees that are submitted to us. Also, majority vote does not necessarily mean that a Pirate will be chosen unless they have proven to be a good and trustworthy Pirate in the Caribbean.

We really appreciate your feedback on our Community Events and we will make sure to share your comments with our Pirates Online Team. We are always pleased to hear from our Guests, as we are constantly balancing and making enhancements to the game to make Pirates Online a fun and safe place to play online.

Again, we appreciate your comments, and look forward to seeing you in the Caribbean again soon!

I do not understand this. Am I missing something or is this plain ridiculous?
