hey 210 04-05-2010 10:47 PM

should we have telesscopes

everycaptain needs a telescope for a ship do you want a telescope because then you can find people on ship that you can attack

bartholomew bladeroberts 04-06-2010 02:33 AM

there are telescope textures in the phase files

Nate Swordwalker 04-06-2010 02:42 AM

I think yes and no, so i put maybe. Here is why i WANT them:

1) If ye are looking for a ship for a quest, you could pop out that telescope and search the sea for it.

2) I like what hey 210 said, that you could see enemies on the ships. You could use a telescope to see where the ' special ' part of the ship is, such as the Captain's Quarters, AMMO HOLD ( full of gunpowder :D ), ect., ect.

Here is why we shouldn't:

1) If you took out a telescope, it would more than likely make you stop everything you are doing to look through it.

2) Telescopes would make the game very easy, making it so you could find ships you need without using the arrow.

I think i have talked enough, so thanks for listening!

Mark bladeflint 04-06-2010 02:54 AM

I think they should be in the game, but you would have to plunder them from people, like the new wepons.

Bubba Bunny x 04-06-2010 02:59 AM

It would be really cool if we had a telescope. For example, I think it would be great that our camera view changes into a up close view and looks like we are looking out a telescope. The problem is though, what exactly will we be looking at when everything is layed out on a map?

Jason Bilgemart 04-06-2010 03:05 AM

I dont think there's a real need for them in my opinion. Dont get me wrong, thats a good idea.

The Skirata Clan 04-06-2010 03:18 AM

I said yes, maybe it can work for searching for ships.

william kid 04-06-2010 03:59 AM

I think telescopes would be cool, maybe make a crows nest so a crew member can climb up and search while you drive. I think this would be fun for SvS when the ships run off and trying to repair to locate them, maybe make it so they can't leave the nest right away so it has a bad thing ( can't get to cannon right away in battle ) to go with the good ( being able to find them )

Eliza Creststeel 04-06-2010 06:14 AM

Um... exactly how useful would that be?

william kid 04-06-2010 06:48 AM

lol guess that would depend, if you have a crew that fills all the cannons on one side plus one you can have somebody up looking without any real penalty but was just trying to make it fair for both sides, Fine ditch the cannon delay :)

Sven Osymthe 04-06-2010 11:02 AM

Well given the fact we can't see enemies on other ships anymore.. and we have a light that guides us to far off objects at sea.. I don't really see the point of this.

I said, maybe. It depends on if they give us a reason to need them in the future. If not, it just seems like a waste of their time when they could be doing other things at this time.

Ben Lockshot 04-06-2010 01:12 PM

I do not really know, I do not see a real point to it. The only thing that this might bring is lag. But thats all I can think of. As Sven about the enemies and the Great quest light from above, ( Lol) There is now real point too it.

So I put other as not really needed.

Buck Seahawk 04-06-2010 02:08 PM

I don't really see a use for it, but I said maybe just in case it did more than I think it would on this game.

MacIronhawk 04-06-2010 02:13 PM

I think yes, so we can see long distances to find ships. And the crows nest would be useful, too.

seafox 04-06-2010 03:17 PM

...its called a spyglass..and I voted maybe, as I prefer to see the crows nest also....but if the spyglass worked...mebbe give just the captain a wider view..or an "engage" feature like focus it on a ship hes chasing sose we don't all run around searching for it...would be nice.

Dockwrecker The Privateer 04-06-2010 03:31 PM

I voted yes to use at sea (or just mount one on a new musket.... :p )

toanuju22 04-07-2010 01:29 PM

Perhaps, that is if it can prove useful, aside from helping with Quests.

As in to see in a range fight if an Enemies guns are loaded, this does however involving adding a recoil to all Gundeck guns for ships, would be realistic.

I'll give some examples just to explain.

Unloaded Gundeck, just after firing with the effects of the Recoil, or just preparing for battle:

while gunning for another capn recently I actually watched our hatches open and cannons come out...I was on the upper gun...it was cool as I'd never angled me camera down that way during a fight...I'll try to remember to get a pic...or mebbe someone else has one from in game?

Dockwrecker The Privateer 04-07-2010 04:06 PM

What Nuju suggests is interesting but the NPC ships in POTCO don't have much range other than the new Exped. Fleets.I do wish sea combat on POTCO was a little more grand realistic scale....Although... I just realized that Nuju has a point, if unfriendly ships would be shooting from a fair enough distance at you then a typical POTCO pirate ship has more than enough speed to get out of the way,and of couse we can fire back long distance already with deck guns.Imagine a new crew postion:Watchman or something and if he is a quick enough typer than he can shout when the enemies are about to fire, which is tricky in POTCO because the cannons will only come out for a moment and after they fire they stay out longer than before they fired, which is the opposite of the normal.(As far as I can tell real cannons would recoil back as soon as they fired, but not in this game, lol.)Therefore the telescope could help give the driver an idea of when the enemy just shot at his ship.Excellent thought Nuju,ye had me confused for a minute. :p

djr_8fan 04-07-2010 10:41 PM

as of right now the search light we have is suppose to work as a telescope of sorts. I dont like it much anyway.
I think we should have one and also a crows nest. we could have a crew member be designated for the crows nest and use the telescope too. and if we had a crew member in a crows nest then the captain could stay on the helm and not stop what he or she is doing.

blaster54 04-07-2010 11:11 PM

omg omg yes that would be so cool!

Well... not all cannons load at the same rate, that is in reality, so perhaps...... there isn't a good way for me to explain this...... except from Movie footage that highlights it for Epicness,....... In At Worlds End before the Endeavor enters battle All gun ports Open and cannons come out 2-3 at a time,.... was a very cool scene in the movie and is how a ship would ready it's guns for battle , though there are no Gunports in POTCO that open or close, a Spotter looking at 6/12 gundeck guns loaded would mean that the ships deck would almost be ready to fire and "Evasive Action" should be taken.

Yes I see what you mean.Lol,I have a question though...why don't all the cannons roll out in unison? As for "Evasive Action" POTCO ships are more than fast enough for that to be a major tactic because it already works in close range flanky fire.

I'm getting a shot ingame now of a POTCO ships gundeck.EDIT:It seems the guns in POTCO shoot in some pattern:[Click to Enlarge] Click the image to view the full version The hatches do open for a moment since an update last year sometime as far as I can tell.

Dog Firestack 04-09-2010 08:22 PM

I voted maybe because I don't really see a point. I mean yeah it would be cool but there's really no point. I respect the idea of using them to look at weak spots but that's already there, once hit alot fire goes onto the weak spot. Also far sight is ok but it won't really work because you have a compass and it doesn't hityou until you're close to it not when you're really far. On the positive side, they could be used to sight enemies on a ship from a distance or you can use them to look at something mysterious in the ocean that you later could be looking for in the game later. For example skull chests or something like that. Also before you board you could use it to see the levels. There are ups and downs about this but there's alot of things to do. On land you could use them to look across town where you can't see for people but I wouldn't be surprised if not. Fair winds!!!

Slightly too long to quote.

Well then, all that needs to be implemented is making the guns longer, then a Skilled Spotter could be able to see the cannons. Seems easy enough.

As for your question, is that for in game mechanics or in Reality? Cause when brought into reality, the Human Factor comes in, and not always are some lazy seamen quick enough to pull the 32lb guns into place however for POTCO I would suppose that it falls too a pattern or repetition.

I take it I must have missed the update that implemented this.

i think that adding the telescope would be pointless.....??
