POTCO is free!

I found this on wikipedia today:

Paul Yanover said: "We’re going to let you play this massively multiplayer online game for free for as long as you want."

yay! agrrr! what do ye think of that me mateys?

Here be the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates...ribbean_Online

So long and happy free play!

From what i've read there will be a free version ( ad supported ) with limited access to a few islands and features of the game... unless this has changed the paid version will be unlimited access but i could be wrong.

i think it'll all be free...usually when a game says free it's free. and look at disneys other worlds: you have to pay for toontown and CP but vmk and POTCO will be free

HaveAMagicalDay 10-11-2007 08:33 PM

sometimes game makers say "free" to get ppl to sign up. By what they say in piratesonline.com is that you must pay to get full membership. You can play a free version, with adds, and less options. Also, wikipedia is not ALWAYS accurate 100% of the time, anybody could have put that, to fool people, or they miss undestood it. You can't ALWAYS 100% trust what any wiki says. Disneyonlineworlds.com is based on facts, but sometimes things are not updated when something changes, usually a small thing. The editors at the wiki try very hard to keep it updated, though based on facts. :) So people might get the wrong idea. I might be wrong about wikipedia, because it might be right. So this might be right, but I really don't think everybody will get a free account. Some online games give free memberships to the first so many ppl or for a limited time (like a month). You might be right and I might be wrong we won't know until it's official on the site itself.

Um... I have the FREE Toon Town account and you can only use the first playground, one track for driving, and only doodles in the first petshop... You can not get things for your house, car, or use friends codes...

If you look close enough, Toon Town is all about Disney...

HaveAMagicalDay 10-11-2007 08:39 PM

Yes, this will be like toontown in a way with the free version. People with a free account will have limited access. If you pay, you can do what everybody else does.

I doubt it will ever be free if everything is able to be accessed. We (the beta testers) are lucky to try out this game for free with full access. Think about it, creating graphics cost money, updates cost money, etc.

KellyBloodcastle 10-11-2007 09:48 PM

I really don't think it's going to be entirely free. There will probably be a free limited account, but you'll probably have to pay to access the full version of the site. It costs alot to create and run a game like POTCO, their going to want to make thier money back.

lizziepirateprincess 10-11-2007 09:52 PM

What I've heard is that pirates of the caribbean will be free with ads and not be able to access some of the game. It's true that wiki is not always a good place to get information, anyone can edit wiki.

Ducky Wucky 10-11-2007 09:58 PM

This was taken from the main Wikipedia page at the top;

"Welcome to Wikipedia,
the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. "

That means that someone could have easily just put that there to fool people.

Although, I do believe that POTCO will be free, but limited. Here's my proof:

1. When I log on and i get the "Pick a Pirate" screen, at the top left it says "Unlimited Version", that means that there must be another version. So my idea is that with the Unlimited Version, you can go anywhere you want. But if there is a limited version, then you'll only be allowed to go to certain places and earn certain skills.

2. Why would such a 3D multi player online game be advertised so much. it costs a lot to make a 3D game, not to mention all the workers that worked on it, they need to get paid as well.

Rattlebones 10-11-2007 10:09 PM

Shot Online is already like this in some respect.
You can play the game for free forever.
However, there are special items that you can only access through fees.

Personally if they are going to charge, and remember this is Di$ney, I hope they go that route.

PirateMarioJr 10-11-2007 10:25 PM

Since the wiki is made by people like us, It's known to lie sometimes. But what about beta people? Do they have membership if it's P2P?

Bellatrix 10-11-2007 10:27 PM

PiratesOnline is free. If you like ads. And not being able to get lots of stuff.

Otherwise, it is not.

axel006 10-11-2007 10:52 PM

well it is kind of crazy that disney will actually make this free. (since all disney wants is money and their already swimming in it) but that would be awsome if the unlimited version is gonna be free.

Ninja Pirate 10-11-2007 11:00 PM

Nothing in life is free.

I seem to remember adds when i played beta 1.

you can edit a WIKI, you cant edit stuff from the wikipedia site. (wikipedia makes wiki but you can only edit wiki)

Vandelay 10-12-2007 04:56 PM

The person who put that quote in Wikipedia was me. :)

Disney's Paul Yanover DID say that, I heard it with my own ears during a recording of his speech at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January.

BUT, I agree with everyone else that what he really MEANT was that you can play the limited, ad-supported version for free for as long as you want. That seems pretty clear from everything that's happened since that speech. During the first beta, some people actually tested the limited ad-supported version, so we know that it exists.

Of course, in the same speech he also said that the game would open in the 2nd quarter of 2007, and we all know how that worked out.

munkey458 10-12-2007 07:49 PM

Truthfully I never expected PoTC to be free period so hey I'm happy there'll be a free version, ads or no ads I'll still play. I'd like to pay but I don't know that I'd be able to for sure =P I could pay myself probably by the time we'd have to pay, just have to wait and see >.<

Silver Beard 10-14-2007 04:09 AM

Let me take back most of the stuff i said: i emailed potco and they said that you do have to pay for part of it.

but i have to say something: if you have to pay for clothes, well, duh: i am a pirate. do you see Captain jack sparrow changing clothes every other day? NO!
and i don't think they should charge us for going to different islands, were pirates! we dont pay admission to destroy a ship or travel around the seven seas! do ye agree with me matey?

Blackhole_Galaxia 10-14-2007 01:11 PM

Well that would be good but i heard you will have limited access like runescape. Plus you cant always trust what wikipedia says. And on a side note does anyone else here remember when toontown was completely free. Because a long time ago when i first played toontown it was completely free.

Ah, that'd be awesome if it were like some games and you just had to pay for like different outfits. Not pay to get to go to an array of different islands and such. Guess we'll pretty much just have to wait and see :jacksparrowvswillzu

I just found out you have to pay for special upgrades and to get bigger and better ships...its really sad having to pay for a pirates game...pirates don't usually pay to get better wepons do they? I don't see captain jack payin' for a new cutlass...he just takes one from someone else and thats that.:pirate81::ahoy:

EERaider 10-16-2007 06:22 PM

Ar, I agree w/ silver beard

That be true mate. But pirates never pay right? So, what do pirates do? They steal. But unless somone can figure out a way to steal, an unreal/nonphysical object, such as a game. We are stuck. Ar, maybe I'll rob a bank or somthin' LOL AR, with a sword and all. Back to plunderin'. They sould have giveaways, like if ye complete a certain task ye get free, service. ME like that ,AR!

munkey458 10-18-2007 01:05 AM

Yeah, we pirates shouldn't have to pay. Tis just not right :forum smiley sword:

SavvyPink 10-20-2007 04:44 PM

I was hoping that perhaps the beta testers would get to continue testing with them once the game was fully launched, but I suppose not.

I don't know if it is worth so much money each month...

taylor94 10-22-2007 09:09 AM

it is £9.95 a month on homepage it says pre order right near the top check there for more details

Bluesaucer 10-22-2007 06:18 PM

Truthfully, I had a huge feeling since the day they announced Phase 1 of the beta that this would be a game to pay for, Just like toontown. It has 3D graphics, music, and many other things. I think Disney is going to try and pull this off.

Oh well, Hopefully the basic version will be fun also...

Yes, lets hope

If the PotCO developers said it is free, and it is not (which it isn't), I'm going to get mad at them. Disney is a super rich company, and if they lose a thousand dollars a day by this game, it won't hurt them. Besides, this game will draw more and more people to the park - so if the game is free, they still make money.

Ms_Moofers 10-23-2007 08:00 PM

Okay fellow pirates - here is my experience as a Beta 2 tester and the "free" version. I did have unlimited access - meaning I could create up to 4 pirates on my account and do all the quests that give special powers to TP to the other major islands as well as getting new skills on your weapons. I had a level 16 pirate, level 11 and level 6. (Have been trying doing things differently with each - to see which works best for me) - ANYWAY, over the weekend, I was switched from full access to basic access - which is what you would get if you play the free version. The ads were very distracting; you do have have fullscreen access; quests are locked early on; weapon skills become locked (my 2 that had voodoo dolls could pull them out but they no longer worked) - I could no longer TP to any of the islands I had finished the quests for. That is only what I recall off the top of my head but as a player who isn't very skilled at these kind of games, I can tell you anybody with any experience will max out of the free version (as far as leveling up) most likely in 2 hours. I did tell them in my bug reports I thought they should make more of it free but I suppose they want those that pay to feel like they are getting something... I mean you could continue to play - sailing around in the smallest boat and watching everybody else with much cooler weapons - but I didn't find it any fun. They did switch me back to unlimited when the weekend was over and everything works perfectly like it did - but the bottom line is this - Yes, there will be a free version - it won't include much. To fully enjoy the game, you will need to pay for it. And as a footnote, IF they ever let us change our clothes (something girls like to do from time to time anyway) I doubt we will have to purchase them - I think it would be more like VMK where you just pull up the menu and change that way) However, I would be surprised if we were allowed to change clothes - too many other things going on in the game and that has got to be the least of their worries. Sorry to be the one with bad news here but I have first hand experience.

munkey458 10-23-2007 11:03 PM

Ouch if that's the case with Basic accounts I don't know how long I'll play. I'll wind up getting bored and sick of it :zu02zq:
Then again I don't know. I'll have to wait and see really.

When the developers said that the game was going to be free, they meant it can be free with limited access to some features. There's no reason to be getting mad at them :D

Trevinator 10-24-2007 12:55 AM

Free and pay version

You can either play for free with limited gameplay or pay 10 dollars a month and get the full gameplay!
