Guild Requirement Silliness
Hello!
Some of you know, I've been on the forums for a right smart piece of time... LOL I've got one level 40 pirate, another level 35, and I now have yet another level 9 baby pirate. Last night I inquired about joining a well known guild and was told they only accept level 25 and up members. Before I was told this, I pointed out I was an adult player, and this was not my first pirate. Now, I have to ask - as the onetime GM of a large guild that I minimalized by choice - what does this accomplish? I know when my guild was at its most active, part of the fun was helping lower level members. We mainly had adult players - polite players - who followed guild rules, and helped each other out. Its just no fun having all members who can fend for themselves. I would be joining my next guild with a partner, and being as though its not our first pirates - we don't often ask for help. We always manage on our own. The point is, may I ask GM's with a level minimum - WHATS THE POINT? We would have liked to have been members of an active guild, that we recognized, and were somewhat impolitely told 'too bad'. No, 'friend me' or 'contact us when you are higher' (Which I wouldn't have likely done anyways - we find a guild, we stick with it.) I would say a level minimum would LIMIT members since alot of people like to grow with a guild, and stick with it! Baby pirates aren't always kids who bug members - and I know when we find the right guild, chances are, we won't be leaving it at level 25 to join one with a requirement. Just voicing an opinion, but this was the silliest thing Id ever heard! A guild full of level 25 and up players has got to be incredibly boring! Theres no one to help!! Oh well.. still seeking a guild who doesnt rule out polite baby pirate players!! |
Aww Nelly that is sad & I agree. Have you checked out Deuces Wild? We are an adult group but almost everyone has several pirates because we love baby pirates & are a fun group that helps each other & have lots of fun together. We are a very close Guild. We have a great GM in Basil & have a guild night each week also. Lots of ingame chatting. We are serious about leveling but just as serious about our fun too!

Will any DW members be on later this evening? We'd love to meet some!
And thank you for the invite - its hospitality like this that gets noticed and remembered. =) |
Just check out the DW Sub forum Nelly. All you ever wanted to know and then some ;) Shoot me a PM if you have any questions ;)

Back on the actual point of the thread, it's probably an image thing. Guilds don't want large numbers of low levels because then it looks like they are just recruiting any players to boost their numbers. It's hard to take a guild seriously that has mostly level 9 players (esp. if the majority are basic). Not saying these are my views, but I think that might be some of their underlying logic.
Other than that, the obviously explanation is arrogance. |
Perhaps that's the way some guilds work. I would surmise that there could be various reasons for the level requirement:
Also, once a guild has a rule such as a level cap, it is generally (my opinion) better to just hold to the standard than to make exceptions here and there. It's the exceptions that cause strife when one person gets preferential treatment and another doesn't. Take DW; they have an adults-only requirement. They stick to that, even though somebody could argue that some younger players could be more mature than some older players. If you have a rule you don't follow or enforce, then you have no rule. Not saying I necessarily agree with the idea of a level requirement. I'm just suggesting why some guilds could do that. As for the Krewe, we don't believe that age, gender, paying status, and level are indicators of the quality of the player behind the pirate. And some of my lower level players have stayed for a long time while some of my high level players have left. However, many of my low-level prospects did join, play for just a little while, and I never saw them again. But that's okay. It doesn't hurt us in any way, and if they decide to come back and try the game again they have a guild ready to help. |
Well. thats why I pointed out the following things to the person I inquired to:
Adult player Not my first pirate Polite Player Bringing someone with - same status Playing for over a year Still seemed disinterested since my pirate I was playing was a level 9. Heres the thing tho - if I was happy with a guild that I enjoyed with my level 9, I would be more likely to move my high level pirates. I think alot of it is arrogance as well.... oh well. Lots of other great Guilds. :) |
I understand, but the key point about the level rule for that particular guild could be that they would have to make an exception to the rule for you. If they make an exception for you, then there is favoritism.
I'm not defending, just surmising that could be the case. And I agree with you that it would have been great for them to at least offer up the guild when you hit their level limit. I also agree that level limits don't make sense to me in my guild, but my guild isn't based on SVS or PVP. If that other guild is, that could be an issue also. I don't know. Just suggesting. However, you WILL find a good guild. There are plenty of them. You just need to find the guild that meets your needs instead of picking a guild based on popularity or size. DW is a fun and active guild with great leaders who really enjoy a laugh. |
Thats my point - I ran a large guild before. Umbrella Academy. We had over 200 members and were ranked. The reason I was seeking a 'known' guild is frankly - I dont have to keep joining and leaving until I found what I want! LOL If its a known Guild I've seen or heard of, or have a friend in, I KNOW what to expect.
Believe me - I was a member of Thieves of Honor when it was at its largest. My own, and a few others. I just would like a Guild where the members have manners, and where we can enjoy ourselves with as little drama as possible! LOL I HATE DRAMA and kids talking about ingame boyfriends and girlfriends. Im not here to flirt, and if I wanted an online thing, Id join eHarmony. Its hard to find a good guild unless you've heard about them and know what to expect. I understand about the exception, but I would think the member representing a guild would be more friendly, or offer a nice statement as to 'come to us later'. But even then, I'd refuse. If they didnt want me before, Im not coming over then. :) |
Good luck finding a new guild, Nelly :)
and as the others have said, its just something some guilds do. But like you said, certain people just look for mature guilds that are here to play the game and have fun doing it. Just because someone is a low level doesn't mean they aren't a good guild member - just means they don't spend there time leveling as much as another. All the points have really been hit, so I pretty much repeated what the others felt. |

My new one should be over level 20 in a few days likely! =) |
Nice Nelly, but what I mean is that is sometimes the case. Never the less, the guild should not judge members based on their level.
No wonder you were the exception! lol |
No... we still havent joined a guild yet. We're waiting to go on later and figure it out! We have had some WONDERFUL guild invitations, and I thank all who messaged WHOLEHEARTEDLY!
=D |
Just a quick note Nelly, many of us are on throughout the day & much of the evening, some are in & out. As Sarah said check us out here & ingame any time.
|
I think its fun to help new players in my guild it makes them intrested in the game more than being turned down by every guild I would never do that as GM of O'fury's court

Last night I guilded sakara a level 9. She was in a similar predicament as you we took her in and I really hope she gets on often.
....our site launching soon http://spaniaguild.org Our guild was about to be maxed... so we added a cap limit... ( a while back ) and one of the reasons is because young pirates tend not to get on as much or they have other pirates in other guilds that makes it so they are not active. If they were active then ..... why would they be low level??... yet I know for sure some members low level or not they are active, and nice people so as long we know what we are dealing with.. it's ok.. at the moment our cap limit is 10. But if you are lower than that and you talk to us and say you are going to be active, we would take you in! |
I accept anyone at anytime but I do pruning of members who I have not seen for a long time, now mind you that a level 34 may come in infrequently and still be a 34 for a while, but a single digit level or teen-leveled pirate who has been the same level for oh,,, a long time,,, I cut them lose.
Also I use an unofficial probationary period at my own discretion, basically, it isn't written on stone, it's kinda like,,, if you are not mature enough and have no common sense I will cut you lose as well. Yesterday I cut lose a guy that I had for a LONG time and NEVER once talked,,, every greeting ever made, inquiry, anything always ignored, nothing bad happen, it was just rude so I gave him 3 warnings on 3 different days and booted him off on the last warning which,,, he ignored. We are not a chatty guild, well, right now is dead quiet, hardly ever anyone comes in anymore,,, but that's the guild curse affecting many of us I guess, I don't like guilds where you come in and have to spend 5 minutes saying Hi, Hello, How do you do,,,, just a simple "Ahoy mates" upon arrival suffices the acknowledging part,,, departures can be unexpected so I don't care if you split without saying a word,,, as long as that isn't your signature we are cool. Please, join me guild if interested. Adult player here. Open invite here if ye wanna drop by and say Hi! Better if ye stay! ;) . DYAT3327 |
Personally, I would NEVER post an open invite code! NEVER!!!
|
ye can try any of the guilds on the forums (Black Bart's Krewe, Deuces Wild, to name a few)
aye, i dont like those guilds that have lvl requirements, but age requirements, are ok by me mate, ye dont want to post an open-invite code unless yer happy to have some unpleasant people (not people on these forums, but other people can veiw the posts) |
Remember the story I told you about sakara, well... guess what.. I never saw her again.. Just that one night. This is why we have a level requirement. That spot could be use by an active member that could contribute some how to the guild. And by the way, our guild has been maxed so any spot left (or that opens) is very limited and that is one of the reason we try to make every spot valuable. As members are the most important asset of the guild.

It can be changed anytime and meself or any officer will boot ya if you come in to misbehave. Open codes are just fine! |
Nelly, I can not speak for the other Guilds on POF but we Deuces would love having you. Though I do not play as much as I wish I could.... Whenever I do come in game my Guild Mates treat me as though I am in game constantly, Always willing to let me join in on whatever. I always feel welcomed!
The few Guild nights I have attended have been a Blast (no pun intended). I wish you the best in whichever Guild you both choose. |
