Your thoughts on the new beta 2

Ok, let us hear (I mean read) your thoughts on the new beta. What do you like or not like about it?

MAJOR LIKE: LESS LAAAAAAAAG!!!! :dancetl6:
I can easily move around town and other places without pausing, stopping, hitching every second. Very improved.

Like the new interface. Less cluttered, can see more.

Still getting used to the new camera controls.

Dislikes:
When more than 1 of us is fighting a mob, the mob won't change his focus on anyone else that is hitting it. 4 of us was hitting a undead pirate, and he targeted me. I ran far away from him, to the nearest exit, and he followed me all the way, with the 3 other players hitting him the whole time.

The music for the cut scenes are sometimes MUCH louder than the person speaking. Or maybe the volume of the person speaking is too low? hmm

Badpete 09-25-2007 01:00 PM

I think that was teh case before as well. whomever hits the "enemy" first becomes the target of the enemy, which is one reason if you travel in "bands" you should have the strongest person attack or take turns so no one in teh band gets too weak.

Bands seems to be working nicely (easier to communicate than both guilds and crew)

graphics seem more smooth and havent had teh problem of dropping to weird levels of teh screen ( ie under a house or a boat)

Much easier to get on and off boats now ( row, row, row you boat :sailr:)

Can't really say yet as all i get is my launcher has news of the beta in the side bar and I can log in but it says closed for maintenance and doesn't even try to download any new updates. Maybe a glitch?

Edit: Working now, will update this shortly

Pirate Funnymush 09-26-2007 01:07 AM

Yeah it was down for maintainance a few times today.

Sinking ships is definitely more difficult now. They've sunk me so many times q: Makes it more challenging. Can't be a loner out there in the High Seas.

I do like how the seas have names.

Sr.Penguin 09-26-2007 03:08 AM

Excellente! The minimal lag is awesome. In just three hours, I have got 5 in Overall and Cutlass, & 2 in Pistol and Cannon.

Unlike last Phase, I only got 4 Overall and no pistol.

I can look forward now to coming home and playing some great pirates.

Pirate Funnymush 09-26-2007 03:20 AM

I agree, the seas are very difficult for a loner. Have to get a crew to help out.

I also find that it is very hard to get gold, yet many of the items are pretty expensive.
For example, early in the quests you are asked to sink navy ships. Can't really sink navy ships with your small boat so need at least 300 gold to buy a bigger boat.

But majority of quests and drops barely give 5 gold much less 10.

Now if only I could find a treasure chest full of gold. :D

Tonguetyed 09-26-2007 05:00 AM

Well, if you're decent at poker you can gain some gold over in Port Royal's tavern (I had about 350 in gold in about 20 minutes). But I didn't really look into buying a bigger ship, which I should. I do agree that sinking ships is way more difficult now. They keep running away. That or they're super high lvl and I get blown away, lol.

Ms_Moofers 09-26-2007 10:07 PM

Well, I was really glad to be back however I hate the new camera controls - maybe I am doing something wrong but to have to hold down the right mouse button the whole time (esp in a fight) and left click on special skill icon or to swing - very confusing for me - and hard on the hands...

BUT, I really do like the reworked special skills being available on screen AND the way they have reworked the tonic system is really good - I am disappointed the gold rewards for quests are so low - everything is so expensive it will make it really difficult to make much. See you on the high seas mates!

HaveAMagicalDay 09-26-2007 11:47 PM

I think the game has some BIG improvements since Phase 1. The things that I like are not much lag at all!!!! Also, no buggy quests, so far.....!!!! The things I don't like are, the camera, and shooting on a ship. But overall, better!!

Couldn't agree more. Trying to follow a navy or trading ship when they are circling around you, using the camera, is a difficult task. Considering it keeps reseting to a behind the ship angle. Think they should allow the camera to stay where it is, once you move it. Easier to keep track of the enemy.

I agree with the earlier comments about ships being much harder to sink, and about never having enough gold. I'm spending a fair amount of time killing soldiers and skeletons just to pay for my ship repairs, bribes, and such. But I'm early into the game, so I'm hoping that'll change later. And I got used to playing alone in the first beta, but it seems like I'm going to have to spend more time on crews. That's fine, and it'll probably make things more fun.

I kind of miss the animation of boarding my ship. It seems a little odd to just click on a little boat, then suddenly I'm on the deck of my ship. And vice versa, when you click on "Drop anchor", and suddenly you're on land. I'd prefer that they have SOME kind of short little animation in between, similar to Toontown where you jump onto your racecar, golf cart, etc.

Yeah, it's not all that fun when more gold is coming out then coming into our treasure chests. But its okay to me, because then we are actually EARNING the better ships. In Phase 1, the baddies just floated and didn't attack. I actually feel more accomplished when I sink baddies now lol...

In regards to the new boarding animations, I think its way better. No more having to get on the ship before you run out of time. Also, grappling and boarding is a smoother experience.

Ms_Moofers 09-29-2007 12:40 AM

They do seem to want us to be in a crew or guild as opposed to being a loner - which would be okay if I could find one to join! :( They few I have joined the capt were lower level and the ship sank - making me wake up in jail time and again - and trying to get a crew for my ship - been trying for 2 days with no luck - maybe more people need to be on - wonder how many phase 2 keys they gave out??

IceSphere 10-01-2007 11:18 AM

The lag is a little better. Still turn way too far when walking, running, or SHOOTING a cannon...(or not at all).
Can NEVER aim right on the ship (let alone a mast)... Sorry, I just expect more than Toon Town by now (2+ years waiting for the game).
I hate that they think making a task like, yum... sailing take 5 times longer is a good way to keep you in the game more than the three month it would take you to finish the it... Insted of making it more FUN
What do you do after the quests are done?
Even VMK has things you can trade to keep things FUN...

One of the things that really bugs me about the new version is the placement of the tonics which you use by typing a "T" I wonder just how many tonics has been taken because people forget to use the enter key before they start typing? I know that I, for one, have kept those gypsies in business. In case you did not know yet, most of the gypsies on the islands now sell the tonic, which is a little pricey. As is the case with all items you need to purchase.

It seems the Pidgely quest is bugged and you cannot advance (after killing 13 of those Navy buggers!)

The Will Daggar quest works great now, however Lizzy falls a little short on her training for the use of it. But with practice it becomes easier to use. I love throwing that Asp!

Teleportation must be earned to go to the major islands. When you get to Level 12 notoriety, Tia will offer the teleport to Cuba. That was one of the easiest totems to earn and a necessity in this game!

Most of the NPC have received an update with regard to their looks. Plus there are many new NPC I have noticed around the Islands! Will have to upgrade my manual extensively!

Have received many "whispers' from fellow pirates which appear to say "blah blah blah blah" Might have something to do with not actually using a friend code (as in Toontown). Was wondering if anyone actually received a normal whisper?

The Voodoo Doll is the greatest thing since sliced bread! Several of us have leveled up by attacking the undead relentlessly while one of our party "cures" us while we fight. This will certainly come in handy since many of the enemies seem to have extremely high levels.

I wish there was a way to scroll through the list of your hearties easier and really wish you could remain in someone's crew even after a crash. It would be nice if everyone in a guild could automatically teleport to each other without having to add their name to the friend list as well. That would cut down on a lot of the repeat of names.

But most importantly, for me anyway, it is so good to be back sailing the high seas! Thanks, Disney and all of you that worked so hard on the game during our hiatus!

See you in the game!:dancetl6:

Tell me about it!!! I have wasted so many tonics doing this!!! I can only imagine when I reach a higher notoriety and using higher lvl tonics...I'm suuuure gonna be even more upset. lol

I LOVE the dagger as well! With the way my character spins it in his hands. It's quick, it keeps the enemies stunned and you can hit them first from afar. I just got the "Fight Dirty" skill which throws dirt in their faces and blinds them for 10 seconds. Love it!!! Helps fighting higher lvl enemies a little easier now.

DITTO! Found that frustrating as well.

I have a lot of the same issues as most here. However I do not hear anyone talking about the low frame rates. Anything under 30 is not good. I average about 17 FPS and I have a decent machine and T3 speeds in connection.

Also the latency that is experienced when you approach an island. If you have no ships around it is usually a 2 or 3 second hiccup. But one time I was fighting and there were 4 ships near. I got a bit close to the island and it took over 20 seconds for the island graphics to sharpen. Needless to say I was sunk and never saw the battle end.

Yes the latency and frame rates have improved, but it is not good enough.

Pirate Rose 10-02-2007 01:18 PM

I mostly notice the lag when in battle with ships or other characters. The health and characters do not aways respond.

I also noticed another good thing, the cost of repair a sunk ship has gone down yet again, so no more 28 gold :)

IceSphere 10-04-2007 01:05 AM

I can walk, and turn just fine in a shop... BUT in the game, all that other stuff starts downloading, my frame rates drop to under "3" UGH!!!

The only thing that saves me is the dagger... I don't have to move much, they come looking for me.

I don't think they can fix the lagggg unless you move onto your own spot of the server for the game play (like when you are in a shop), and there would be too many players to do that... They might be stalling for faster servers.

How good of a game should you have for 10 million dollars..?

They bought Club Penguin for 350 million dollars... that is a lot of millions, and look at the graphics for that game...

JoG 10-04-2007 01:38 AM

A lot of the issues with lag stem from syncronization issues. I see this most prominently when my wife and I are playing together. The POC network is not the fastest or the software that is in beta is just not finely tuned yet. ToonTown suffered the same thing years ago too. And this game is written off of the same platform too.
