POTC vs LOTR

WHat do you think is better? Lord of the Ring or Pirates of the Caribbean. Both are great Action/Adventure movies. I prefer Lord of the Rings.

toanuju22 06-25-2009 12:33 AM

i hate lord of the rings so much its my second most hated movie next to the Hanna Montana 3D concert :laughks2:

POTC is my most favorite movie series :degen:
and my favorite POTC movie is #2 the dead mans chest :psmiley27:

i like POTC even more than

Star Wars :buds:
Transformers :piratear:
Indiana Jones :12_1_138:

Juliana Maria 06-25-2009 12:55 AM

Pirates all the way... One of my favorite movies. I can watch it over and over lol and it still doesn't get old. Never been much of of LOTR fan.....

Erich Uchiha 06-25-2009 01:44 AM

Same as PirateGirl POTC is one of my favorite movies, I will never get tierd of it just like Star Wars.

swashbuckler II 06-25-2009 02:35 AM

if you ask that here, you will most likely get more people that like POTC
If you ask in a LOTR forum, people will most likely like LOTR

Anyway, POTC all the way

The Skirata Clan 06-25-2009 02:45 AM

not me, I love The Rings. I even watched the extended versions. The movies are better in every way. The acting is equally good, the story is not. The Rings remained solid thru all 3 unlike Pirates. Which the story crumbled in the last 2.

Also you must consider the rerun factor. I can't watch the Pirates in a marathon like I do with the rings.

Liz Fireburn 06-25-2009 02:49 AM

I like pirates way better!
Lord of the rings was ok but I never get tired of pirates.
I never get bored watching them.
I have several friends that love them too and we can talk for hours about the movies and the history behind them lol.

Andrew 06-25-2009 03:32 AM

Pirates of the Carribean. No doubt :D.

Stephen O'Malley 06-25-2009 04:33 AM

I was never really interested in Lord of the Rings; didn't quite catch my style.

League 06-25-2009 04:43 AM

I want to see The Hobbit made a movie. Um, yeah babe.

The Skirata Clan 06-25-2009 05:36 AM

Guillermo Del Toro is going to Direct both Hobbit films. Its going to be awesome!

Bug 06-25-2009 08:30 AM

Although I liked both series of movies Prates is very much my favorite. More adventure with lots of humor thrown in & not quite as uptight as Lord of the rings was. Of course I played Pirates alot as a kid so maybe I am biased LOL.

wulfric 06-25-2009 12:16 PM

I like POTC more. LOTR was good, but I am a Sean Bean fan (major fan of the Sharpe series)and seeing him die like he did was tough for me to take. The whole series is too dark for me.

Sven Niscadae 06-25-2009 03:36 PM

Wow. This is like apples and oranges here... I like them both.

Li Wildtimbers 06-25-2009 03:41 PM

perfer POTC over LOTR for the simple fact I can stay awake for Pirates but doze 10 minutes into Rings.

I think most do, so its likely that POTC will win this simply because this is a POTC related community! :)

The Count 06-25-2009 07:59 PM

I like POTC because thats a movie that you cant sleep thourgh

LOTR never liked at all.

Superbob94000 06-26-2009 12:38 AM

True, LOTR starts out boring, but it gets REALLY good. You just have to wait for something to happen. I've seen the Two Towers Extended Edition, which is a true 3 and a half hour master piece. (Yes, LOTR is very long. Return of the King Extended Edition is over FOUR HOURS.)

Maximvs 06-26-2009 01:13 AM

I gotta go with Sven's Apples to Oranges...

Both Movies were very good - but each "theme" is totally different. A futuristic wizard world vs. a pirate world? Not really a comparison there... :) Thats like comparing POTCO vs. WoW because they are both Online Games - comparing two movies with different themes is just too hard to do :)

League 06-26-2009 02:56 AM

This is like one of my favorite games:

"Shoits, or showts?"
"Showts."
"Wrong."

"Shoits, or showts?"
"Showts."
"Wrong."

The Skirata Clan 06-26-2009 05:13 AM

I like the fact that 9 have picked LOTR, but 2 have actually said it.

Superbob94000 06-26-2009 11:48 AM

I know. I liked that. So, either people lied, or people are afraid to tell us what they like more, so they only vote.

LOTR is very futuristic. There's just magic, and very much of the traveling is done by walking or riding horses.

And Talking Trees, and Shape Shifting Lands, and some creatures never seen on this planet, and a "all knowing eye"...

The only thing in common is the horses and the walking! :D

Not to say LOTR wasnt a good serise - I loved it :) But I cant compare it against POTC - Pirates vs. Wizards just isnt the same for me :)

Technically, it's not really the "all knowing eye." It's the eye of the evil king Sauron.

I have always seen LOTR as being Medieval times.
Times of knights and wizards, kingdoms and castles.

Eric Daggerskull 06-26-2009 09:21 PM

Though both are outstanding trilogies, I voted for Pirates. The story is more enjoyable even though it is more complex than LOTR.

The Skirata Clan 06-26-2009 09:55 PM

If anything Pirates is simpler than Rings.

Superbob94000 06-26-2009 10:25 PM

Of course it is! LOTR is VERY complicated.

Eric Daggerskull 06-27-2009 02:23 AM

Not quite for me. Having to follow along with the gold story line, and then the EITC and the whole Davy Jones curse. Pretty confusing.

JM Ohara 06-27-2009 05:24 AM

I like Pirates the game but have not ever and will not ever watch the movies. Everyone I know who shares my taste in movies said they were boring and badly made. I don't know about that, cause it seems to me that the game is pretty good so why make bad movies and a good game? I won't watch because I get grossed out pretty easy, at least by undead stuff and the like.

For me it's Lord of The Rings hands down all the way. If they had a game like Pirates I'd be done. I've watched all three extended movies in one day! The third movie is in fact just under 4 hours with a full half hour of credits. Yes, parts of it thoroughly gross me out, especially the dead city. But Lord Of The Rings is an epic unparalleled to me.

That puts me in the minority here, but here I stand firmly in the LOTR camp and proud of it!

The Skirata Clan 06-27-2009 06:09 AM

Hawke, I would highly recommend the The Black Pearl, but thats it. The other 2 are Fx galore. Other than that I'm Rings all the way.

Dan_OB 06-27-2009 07:36 PM

The LOTR series is one of my all time favorites. I've watched them several times and will watch them many more. The POTC movies I watched once, may watch again, maybe not. Enjoyable movies, but not standouts. I don't play the game because I was entralled by the movies but because it was recommended by a friend.

Captian Quelzar 06-30-2009 07:44 AM

Lord of the rings is good but pirates of the caribbean is by far my favorite series of movies

Superbob94000 07-18-2009 12:33 PM

In my opinion, Pirates 3 stunk! My favorite was the first one, and the second one was just OK.

League 07-18-2009 07:57 PM

The third pirates film really was wacky... though it did have it's moments, like where you saw Davy Jones standing in a bucket of water on an island. It was cheesy for the whole though. The second one was decent though.

Pirates didn't really have a complex story, just complex plots and sub-plots--though it did have turns from the more believable storylines, which I personally didn't like. LOTR is a complex world, complete with stories like The Hobbit and The Samarillian (did I get that right?).

MacIronhawk 07-18-2009 10:07 PM

I've never seen the Lord of the Rings movies from beginning to end. I've seen bits and pieces of all of them but I still haven't found the time to watch them.

I'd go with pirates, although the only one that can compare to what I've seen of LOTR is the Black Pearl.

Amelia Heartburn 07-19-2009 03:23 PM

Only saw the first movie of both POTC & LOTR.
Even though, I'd have to go with Pirates.

Buck Seahawk 09-08-2009 01:17 AM

Well, I like them pretty much the same. They are 2 different movies so it is hard to say. The first movie of POTC was great! The second was awesome! the third was pretty sweet too. But, the other 2 movies completely erased the first movie! The first movie has nothing to do with Beckett or Davy Jones. LOTR is one of my fave movies... if not my fave. It keeps everything together and never changed the storyline of the movie. I love both the movies, but I can't watch POTC over and over again like I do with LOTR. What GAME do you like better? Lord Of The Rings Online or Pirates Of the Caribbean Online? I have played the 10 day trial for LOTRO and I am disappointed that it doesn't have a free option like POTCO does. LOTRO was very fun when I played. But I love POTCO because I have played it longer, and I have many friends on there. My answer is POTCO. How about you? :D

Kraken Guard 09-08-2009 06:11 PM

Lord of the Rings, hands down.

Benjamin Goldeagle 10-06-2009 07:46 AM

Long live POTC!!!

swordshot 11-14-2009 03:04 PM

next person to post.... guess.......

HINT:POTC lol

Midhav 11-14-2009 05:21 PM

POTC over LOTR though both are good. POTC is made up of comedy, a good cast & crew, awesome graphics, explorable storylines and are amazing. When i saw POTC2&3 first i didnt like it, but when i saw it a few more times ( and played POTCO and wikied it ), i liked it!
But the ultimate villain thing is kinda split between Beckett ( ruthless, cruel, evil, but not gifted with supernatural powers ), and Davy Jones ( cruel, powerful, somewhat ruthless, yet lost so easilly and is weak in the heart for love ), whereas Sauron is so pure evil along with the Wich King, and the very thought of Morgoth...

Tuefenhandel 11-16-2009 08:18 PM

I have to go with LOTR. In homage to Spike TV's "Deadliest Warrior" I broke it down when trying to make an honest assessment.

Story - Lord of the Rings. Tolkien created an entire new universe. LOTR is fantasy whereas POTC is fiction.

Characters:
Heroine - giving the check mark to Keira Knightly over Liv Tyler. Anyone who wants to dispute this score can meet me in the alley behind the Rowdy Rooster for a parlimentary debate.
Hero - Frodo wins out over Will Turner. But, as a consolation, Will does get the girl. Frodo is the ultimate underdog, and I always root for the underdog. Besides, Will Turner is Legolas (not the other way around).
Arch Villain - Sauron IS evil. Davy Jones, not so much.

Background - LOTR was written by Tolkien as a way to inspire hope in the darkest days of WWII for the English. Haven't noticed how the West triumphs? Saving the shire, where all is peaceful and happy is the allegorical equal of saving England from the ****'s.
POTC was a ride at Disneyworld that evolved into some very good (but, slightly inferior to LOTR) movies. I scored this category LOTR.

Scope - Tolkien invented races, and languages to complete the myth of his story (he was a language professor at Oxford). Before Tolkien things were elfish, after him its elven (elfs vs. elves was also his). The movie does the books justice. Whereas we have very little to compare POTC to as far as background.

Cultural Significance - POTC is doing a lot to perpetuate the pirate mystique. And, the game is wicked awesome. But, "Frodo Lives" was iconographic in the 70's, and let's face it - you just can't get any cooler than a shout out from a Led Zepplin song ('from the depths of Mordor'). Scoring this one for LOTR.

Special effects / make up - that's a draw.

The all important best battle scene category - pitting the 'duel in a vortex of the Pearl vs. the Flying Dutchman' against the Battle of Pelennor Fields. I have to go with LOTR again as Eowyn's triumph and Theoden's death make it much more memorable.

Checking with the judges, it looks like a 6-0-1 sweep.

Buck Seahawk 02-23-2010 02:37 PM

Lord Of The Rings all the way. I like Pirates too, but the movies are all sloppy. Like, the first one was great! Then the second and third movies just turn into a whole different story??? I don't like how it went like that. I was actually watching some of LOTR Two Towers today.

The Evil Will Mcbain 02-23-2010 05:43 PM

You can't do this to, me! These are my two favorie movie series! Ugh. I guess LOTR because I have read and really enjoyed the books as well. This does not mean, however, that I think the last two pirates are stupid. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
Hey, Tuefenhandel, what about the Jack Sparrow-Aragorn comperison XD

Tuefenhandel 02-23-2010 10:04 PM

Jack Sparrow vs. Aragorn? An interesting debate.

If I was looking for someone to have a pint with, it would be Jack.

If I was looking for someone to have my back while settling a dispute in a bar-room, it would be Aragorn.

Who would you rather be? Who would you rather be friends with?

I'm thinking Jack has had a bigger cultural impact, but Aragorn is the better character. Both are flawed, which is becoming the 'go to' trait for authors these days (thank you Stan Lee). So, since Aragorn came first, he's the one I go with. Always choose the original instead of the update.

Kat Five Knives 02-23-2010 10:28 PM

I agree it is hard to choose because I like them both. I also have to agree with Tue's assessment. LOTR was developed over years of painstaking work by a distinguished linguist (Tolkien) and the depth and breadth of the stories, plots, and characters is so deep, it just could not be adquately put to the screen (although Jackson did an awesome job in whittling the stories to do them justice)
I love POTC because it is pure fun and entertainment. I have not tried the LOTR Online game and have no intention to do so as I have made so many friends here and do not wish to leave them. I also think POTCO is fun and entertaining (like the movies).
