When do you tonic?
For very low-level (1-29) pirates, when do you press "T" to drink a tonic?
ok I dont use tonics much but keep some just in case. I end up using them (and auto run) when i go to chat and forget to hit return first lol
I said high red. Early enough to be safe, but late enough to make sure no tonic goes to waste. ;)
I voted early red, but I actually like me tonic 3 times a day...ya no to keep me vitality (hehehe)
Low red......and only if absolutely necessary....(Test character -- all others are over 30)

low red ......but seldom use them

I voted for three - Low Red (not Flashing Red though), Healing by Friend and Healing Myself :) The tonics are there in case My Friend gets distracted (remember folks - they are there to assist - don't 100% depend on them as they may lock up / get distracted by an attack - and with yourself between switching sometimes your 2nd pirate freezes which means 'heal ty'self' until he un-sticks :)

Low Red is the perfect time to use your tonic. If you have friends healing you, they might be low in voodoo or something that prevent them to see your health monitor or lost you on attune. Hit the T in the low red :).
Low red though sometimes I'll just switch over to the doll real quick and use drain life. I try not to take on something by myself that I can't take down before a needing tonic though. Reds, yes, but not that high of a red.
If i don't have my second computer running with a second pirate for healing, I wait until I am in the low red. I don't spend much gold on tonics. Well, except for me hair tonic. Got to keep up the look.
You need another option: "Too late". That would be my choice.
It depends on how fast I'm getting damage. If I'm fighting say a boss who takes a long time to kill but is not doing a lot of damage, I'll wait till I'm in low red. If its a high level regular NPC that is hurting me fast but doesn't take long to kill I'll take it when I'm low yellow. I have used my first pirate to heal my second when my 2nd was a wee pirate, but he doesn't need it now. I also stand near healing NPC's as much as possible. |

i tonic when low red
High red--- If I wait til I get to low red, I would be dead by the time I click 'T'.
I usually wait until low red, but sometimes I wait too long and end up in jail with full health.
Depends on the island. I'll use some on Kingshead, never on a tame island.
As well, depends on a character. Characters below 10 don't get groggy, which is about 3/5's of my characters. As well, some of them still have meat tonics as I understand, and I don't want to use them if I don't have to. |
LOL - on pirates that still have roast pork, I can never press "T," instead "I" then mouse down to a tonic I want. 90% of the time, I'm in jail by the time my mouse reaches the tonic. :-)
Higher level pirates don't really need it much, specially with drain life.
My newest little guy though, well when there was just a spec of red showing and the grenadier had a grenade mid flight, I hit the tonic, lol. |
Ha ha ha, I like this question. It really depends on how much fun I'm having with the NPC. Usually I use tonic in dire need, so low red. Then I whip around and STAB! You guys know how much I would Like a good, dramatic POTCO movie ;).
Low red only when needed if i turn red (im lvl 40) and im fighting a vl 18 vet who has 250 health left ill just finish him off. I use tonics when i turn high red when facing a larger enemy (ie. assassin boss)
Yea, I never really need to tonic. Life drain helps, then there's the times when I have a healer with me.
Fine print reminder: this is supposed to be about low level pirates. :-) I.e. your baby pirate, if you have one or more 40s.
Carry on! I'm glad this thread proved to be both informative and entertaining. I'm not so sure I ever made the distinction about rate of damage before tonic, consciously, that someone pointed out above. Also never thought to tonic early, to get a second tonic in. Too spoiled from all the healers in Beckett's Quarry, I guess. |
