The Edward Lowe Challenge/Valentines Day Massacre
In real pirate history, Edward Lowe was perhaps one of the most depraved characters there was. He was a pirate that made this scurvy seadog seem downright nice. Said to have sunk over a hundred ships in his 14 month career...
ANNOUNCING The Edward Lowe Challenge A race to sink 100 ships. Date: Saturday, February 14th, 2009 (A massacre for Valentines Day.) Time: 2:00PM PST, 3:00PM MST, 4:00PM CST, 5:00PM EST, 6:00PM Maximus standard time. Duration: Estimate 1.5 hours for the first winner, 2 hours for most people, 3 hours to close the event. Server: Meeting on Cozros server at O'Malley's on Tortuga. Each contestant will then be assigned their own quiet server to destroy. Prizes: All prizes via poker table transfers, to a single pirate the winner names. * 20,000: 1st pirate captain to sink 100 ships (without sinking or porting your ship along the way.)Completion: A screenshot link must be posted on this thread when complete. (A screenshot showing when you launched - i.e. at the start of the event, is also recommended.) If you launched multiple times, you must link ALL of the screenshots, to show a total of 100 or more ships. Example: 114 ships. Link it however you'd like - any which way it ends up on this thread for all to see, is OK. Only one prize per winner, only one captain per ship. You can use any type of ship you want, have as many crew aboard as you want, matching or no matching, public or closed, any sea (on that server) you want, any ship targets you choose, whatever. But only the captain of the ship is entitled to the prize (transferable to a single other pirate.) And no complaints about someone coming along kill-stealing. Think of it like weather in golf - tough noogies - it is part of the game. Likewise, no complaints about slow-spawning because you kill them all too fast. At the start of the event, I will list pirate names that have accepted the challenge here on this thread (after having told each person "their" server, on Cozros.) If you are not there at the start, reply on this thread for a late-comer server assignment, so I can send you a private message for your server and add you to the official list. 5 minutes one way or the other is not likely to make a big difference. If you are not on the official list by the end of the event, you can't post your screenshots here; you will not qualify to win if you haven't entered. (Entering late is fine, but you must launch after you enter.) A start time will be given, during the server assignments. You can use the few minutes between assignment and start, to scout out your server, but remember to return to Cozros one minute before start time. (If you complain about a server before the start, I'll just assign you to a different one, no prob.) A screenshot link showing your launch/start is highly recommended...it should be posted with your winning screenshot link(s). Note that you should synchronize your computer's clock (e.g. time.nist.gov) before starting POTCO, so that your timestamps are not misleading. Windows users can just double click the date time in the bottom right corner, then select "Internet time" to sync it. If you plan on starting late, reply here on this thread early, so I can have your server assignment accounted for. Well, avast! If ye plan on starting on-time, too. Arrrrgh. |
If you misread my last line above: please reply here if you want to attend.
|
Krewe? Ye up for a contest? Me personally, I won't be able to make is, but I'd love to see BBK represented there.
|
Arrrrrrrr
Lizzy's up for it...if other Krewe members will join her. What do ya say BBK? :pirate41:

Sounds like a blast Ed. Any Dueces or Wenches want to get a crew together? or may have to dust off Sven....rackat you out there?
|
I'm all up for a good sea massacre, but 5pm on Valentines day may not be a good time...we shall see.
Looks good Ed! |

BUT WAIT! Where are your priorities! Sheesh, romance confounding POTCO schedules? Who ever heard of such a thing? |
Maybe ya need to pass out roses to the wenches, Edward. Ya no us lasses are akin to putty when a pirate greets us with roses! On second thought, Ed ya better add fury to that list...pirate wenches aren't that EZ...lol :pirate41:

Looks great but you may have a problem with the poker exchange.
What happens if an NPC wins? If you can change the date I think I might be able to make it. I'll have to practice sinking that many ships in a short amount of time. |
If the prize winner loses money in a botched hand at the poker table, I will just add the amount they lost to their prize. If the NPCs don't fold after the three flop cards are out, everyone stands up to reset the table, then all is good. (NPCs try to lose the first two hands, whenever the table is reset.)
The original date was to be this Saturday, but I didn't want to conflict with other guild activities I saw around here. The Saturday after that is occupied by GM tours of the new Port Royal. So, it has already been postponed twice, before being formally announced. If turnout is good and everyone has fun with it, this could be a monthly event. If not, then I'll have to pester mlratto for new ideas for race maps, for March/April/May. |
then I'll have to pester Miralto for new ideas for race maps
yes, i need to get busy and create another race. sorry, just been so flippin' busy of late. i was almost done with the SvS version of the Ironrat Cup...i remember there were just a couple tweaks left. I'll pm you later today ed and show ya what i had come up with. |
Ooooooooo nothing I like better. 2pm PST is that 10 pm for me in the UK?? I can never get the darn times right LOL
See ya on the 14th Mates!! Is it possible to have XXXXXX please.............pretty please!! :D |

Looks like alot of fun, not sure if I can make it, going to see how my schedule ends up here.
Best of luck to all that participate!!! |
okay ed please sign up Sven Ironrat and James Buffitt on a team. team name pending unless we can get Agile, Senile & Hostile back together!
I am good from 2-4 pst that day then i am going out to dinner with the wife...but i'm sure we can sink 100 in 2 hours. ;) |
I'm going to try and squeeze it in... if it doesnt get me a *slap* from the misses :)
|
Note: Sinking 100 NPC ships without sinking, yourself, is much harder than it sounds. I STRONGLY recommend you practice! Some zones are faster than others, but cumulative single stray cannonballs add up. Getting to 99, then getting sunk by a level 1 ferret, means you have to start over! And it's brutally embarrassing.
Team names are very cool. Please remember to designate a SINGLE captain for each ship/team. Quote:

That right Zep? Well, close enough. Roses for all ;) Still going to try to make it. Let us know if the time changes. |
If you see heavy hitters in-game and want to tell them about this, try saying in chat
www.piratesonlineforums. com/forums/showpost.php?p=112712with the space before "com/" and after "nlineforums." So far, only a couple from the leaderboards have signed up; there are plenty of prizes to go around and the whole challenge itself should be a blast! |
One week away...keep the PMs coming. No wait, post here instead, please.
|
Well. Ed, the event has been posted on our Krewe calendar...so we need to get a list of Krewe mates that will be able to attend....
|
Ed ill try to make it. I do need 20k anyway, lol
|
Sounds great. Keep the registrations coming!
|
I haven't been online too much lately - but I'll try and pop in......... nothing like a reunion tour!
Agile, Hostile, and Senile '09 Somebody needs to make a t-shirt. |
|
<looks down at self>
<looks at t shirt> <looks down at self> Sarah Darlin', I don't think it will fit.......... |
LOL that's an awesome t-shirt Sarah!...hmmm may be a bit snug on me as well.
Tuefenhandel - the fact i can't remember your pirates name, well i guess that makes me senile. but none the less...we're on a mission from God. We're gettin' the band back together! Zeps - ya grizzled ole scallywag you wanna tag along too? I can't remember if Max was part of the original crew or not either. i believe i extended the invitation to Bella and Skulley as well. should be quite the party boat! |
Remember: one captain, one prize. Fun being the primary objective, the party boat sounds great - but don't forget your pirate's greed - arrrgh! And don't forget to practice!
Awesome t-shirt, Sarah! |
yup ed got it. i think most of the pirates on this cruise are already maxed if not close.
if i'm wrong about any of ya then i'll be happy to give the prize to you. i think we just are after all the bragging rights that goes with this grand event. or at a minimum we'll have a few more tales to tell and i'm sure we'll have a few laughs. |
The 2/10/2009 ship spawning movements and additional sailing changes sure are making this hard. Hope you all have been practicing...routes that were previously comfortable are now hazardous.
|
ed...quick question. can a captain launch say a war frigate...if necessary land on a wild island...and re-launch with a war galleon? or do we have to sail the same ship the whole time?
edit: just did a practice run...was out for 38 minutes soloing on my war frigate. http://www.piratesonlineforums.com/g...um/sink_50.jpg |

So, if you have to repair, land your ship and launch another or repair, but take the less-than-100 screenshot, when you land. If you sink 60 then 50 then 105, only the third run would win a main prize, even though the total from the first and second runs (if posted here before anyone else) would make you eligible to win one of the lesser prizes. Also remember, if you won 4th prize, then kept going and win 3rd prize, 4th will go to someone else. One prize per captain (with or without a crew.) Clear as mud? |
Tuefenhandel = Nathaniel Warfury
If you're Senile, and I know I aint agile - do I get to be hostile? And, unless they give me a pair of pants with bigger pockets, I got no room for money. If only that were true in non-pirate life! |
Clear as mud?
yes! do I get to be hostile? yes! |
*best Jim Morra voice*
Agile? You kiddin me? Agile? You wanna talk about Agile? I just hope I can sail a ship! |
Please remember to PM me your server preference, if you have one. Hope your practice today went well!

EDIT: OH NO! It's a trap! Now all the ladies I spurned by going off my userfriend list instead of the site list, will be mad enough to sink MY ship 100 times! Edit edit: Why must Valentine's Day be so difficult for us guys? |
EDIT: OH NO! It's a trap! Now all the ladies I spurned by going off my userfriend list instead of the site list, will be mad enough to sink MY ship 100 times!
Edit edit: Why must Valentine's Day be so difficult for us guys? Ya forgot the bottle of rum, Ed...always makes the day betters for ye guys!! |
Hmmm. Haven't touched the stuff (in rl) in years...and the last few V. Days...hmmmm. I thought it was just that I was getting old. :-)

By having both a launch and land picture, questions about timezones are avoided. If anyone has a better idea for showing the filename, I'm all ears...but I'd like this to be as un-ambiguous as possible, so nobody can say I'm playing favorites or anything. In fact, I'd like this event to run itself, almost to the point of the posters here deciding who won, instead of me. I'll even consider amending the rules, so that the earliest "file stamp" time (timezone offset) can win even if posted just after another? Probably better as it is now: first one to post here, wins. (Comments? Yes/No/Maybe?) Oh, and by the way, Happy Valentine's Day Everyone! |
we are done!
100 ships in 45 minutes!
Pretty Polly and Kate Swordfury |
oh well second is good, lol

|
Thank you for your kind words Edward. BBK did drop out at the last minute. Our captain's father was rushed to hospital and is very ill. Our prayers are with him.
|
As are my prayers. I know you've sunk over 100 ships since we last talked (considering you were most of the way there) and as the last officially registered participants that were able to attend, I've amended the winner's list. Let me know who gets the gold (here or via PM.)
|

I noticed several interesting tactics that were not obvious beforehand. Ships with smaller crews fared far better at a speed and aim. (The ship I was sailing was blinding fast with crew of 2, molasses slow with crew of 8. All my broadsides misses were when large crew was aboard.) I was also surprised that war sloops fared as well as they did. It was a race after all. Even though I had to stop the war sloop for most targets to take a second, third and sometimes fourth broadsides shot, the ship speed made up the difference. When I've done this in a war galleon, I rarely - if ever - have to take a second broadsides shot...but crawling too slow to the next target makes more of a difference, apparently. Lastly, I found that with two or more people, calling out the number of ships sunk in crew chat after every ship sunk, helped keep count tremendously. With cannonballs-a-flyin' it is much tougher than one might imagine. I was very pleased to see that nobody brought their ship into port with only 99 ships sunk! Thanks again to everyone who sailed today! Well done! |
Congrats to all!!
|
wOOt !!! WTG Pretty one !! Great job upholding McRaging's honor . sorry I couldn't be there to assist you. :( Congrats to the rest of the top 5 , well done !
|
Congratulations to all the winners... and a big kudos to all the participants.
Sounds like everything went great... I'll tell Carver to put yer rum on me tab fer the day! ;) |
No Words!
Lizzy is speechless..and that is not an ez thing to accomplish!

Wowee what a fab contest and great competitors and a big piratey slap on the back for Ed for doing such a great job at organising us all (especially the late competitors).
I do hope we can do it again, although maybe i'll crew next time :pirate2: |

Next month's event I think marks the return of the "Ironcup Races" so this type of event will be once every two months, perhaps? I know he has a special SvS race map prepared; waiting only for some rule refinement and a formal announcement, I think. For the next Edward Lowe, the only real change will be that I'll want all crew captains to show up (with their team members) in their own crew. That way, all extra people (and latecomers) can stand off to the side or something, to get picked or start their own crews. Other than that, the next event can pretty much run itself. |
Thanks again everyone! Some residual screenies are laying around if you feel the need to verify that winners received their prizes. One is still pending but will be added to the album when done.
|
Ed, for the next challenge, I will add to the prizes.
- 10,000 gold bonus to the ship with the least damage (only 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place is eligible) - 5,000 gold bonus to the ship with second least amount of damage (only 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place is eligible) - 1,500 gold to the final player to finish the challenge (complete the mission, post the screenies) All bonus prizes will only be awarded to pirates that signed up in Ed's next challenge thread. Pirates that show up, but were not signed up in the thread at least one hour before the contest begins will not be eligible. |
Awesome Rackat, thank you. I don't want to have donations coming in from everyone, but those are great prize ideas. Plenty of time now, before the April challenge.
