Sailing Levels

I'm missing something when it comes to sailing. I have a large (6 gun) ship and am at level 8 on cannons; but only level one on sailing.

How do you increase this skill? I show the left and right broadsides in my skills button, but the only two cannon skills available to me (right ckick of mouse) is the standard cannon ball and the grappling hook. I even bought some chain shot, but it doesn't appear anywhere.

It sure would be nice if they released a preliminary version of the Player's Guide.

The only whay I have gained sailing skill was when I stayed at the helm during battle, which means someone else needs to be with you manning the cannons. I have very little sailing because I am not very reliable on my connection (added to the normal freezes and crashes it can get crazy) and I just sail alone or cannon for people.

I went to the link and broadside cannons for the light galleon and frigate are also sailing exp. You dont have broadside cannons on the sloop.
