Windows 7?
I have been thinking about changing my operating system over to windows 7 and i was wondering if anybody knew much on if these programs i am attached to so dearly are supported by windows 7.
POTCO(live and test) ToonTown(live and test) FreeRealms CombatArms XFire mIRC ITunes A couple of these i know are supported but i think they are only supported to a certain extent and want to know if anybody may know what limitations there are. |

Windows 7 is a beta OS, not even released 'officially' to public. When you load 'beta' software/os's you are getting exactly that.
(Windows 7 is not scheduled for release until October) Personally I would have to recommend NOT going this route, as there will be little or no support should you have ANY complications whatsoever. Availability of drivers, etc for your hardware configuration maybe an issue as well. Running on OS such as Windows 7 at this point is something I would only recommend for the very computer savvy (when your run a beta application EXPECT problems, thats the point of it being a BETA release) as running beta os/software can end up being a frustrating venture irregardless of someone elses positive experience, the product is BETA, if it were ready for release.. it would have been already. |

Computer vendors are offering "free upgrades" when the OS is released, but not offering any systems with the os on it as of yet. Microsoft site says October is when they are scheduling its public release. There is also a downside to using these releases. They are usually "Time stamped" and only work for a period of time, as Microsoft expects the users to upgrade (likely for a fee) to the release version of the OS when it becomes available. Matter of fact, I quote this from Microsofts Windows 7 page regarding their current "Release Candidate"... Quote:

However I do not want a volume of members to take such a venture lightly. Having worked in the technical support field for 20 yrs, one of the most common mistakes are novice/basic computer users attempting advanced user alternatives like beta/rc operating systems, and applications. Usually due to them playing some game, and catching wind of such ideas from the more advanced users on their favorite gaming site. Almost always generating a need for assistance with something that already has limited support resources because its new. Just not something I would recommend for most. And if its your parents PC something you DEFINATELY must clear with them first. |

No no no its not my parents pc, like i said my dad gets lots of free stuff. So we built a shop outside just for computer and have about 20 of them sitting on the wall. Were just waiting to find a day when its not 150 degrees up in the attic to go up there and fix the internet problem so we have internet access out in the shop. but i have so many computer to mess around with :P

Just a quick chime in on how POTCO runs on Windows 7 RC. I'm running it on a spare drive on my laptop and it runs beautifully for me. No problems with POTCO or mIRC so far. It did take me some effort to get my video drivers working okay but wasn't too much trouble.
As Microsoft has stated with every Release Candidate of their future operating systems, they do not recommend its use for primary home systems and make sure you back up any and all data as a Windows 7 RC install will wipe the drive clean. As Zep has said above, be wary with beta software. Expect issues. Although Windows 7 RC does run a lot better than Vista, there are a few snags you may run into, such as driver support.

What's windows 7? Is it like vista but newer? If so... wow, I just spent a few hundred on something that's probably considered "old".

Windows 7 is Microsoft's newest operating system that will be released this October to the public market. It's very similar to Windows Visa. Well, it's pretty much like Vista except that it actually works well! I've never been a Vista fan but they've seemed to address a lot of Vista's faults in this version. I've been very impressed with it so far.

I am running Windows 7 and POTCO works perfectly! Most of my games are installed in W7, only the older ones are running under XP.

I have Windows 7 RC but on a separate partition. While it runs super excellent, since it isn't fully released, I don't wish to run it as my main OS. However, I am very impressed with it.
On my partition I installed POTC and it ran just fine (since Win7 is very much like Vista). I have had no issues with Win7, though I have not tried everything on it since I have less space on that partition. I don't suggest using it as your main OS, but if you can partition and dual boot, go for it. The RC is free to use, till March 2010, but it may not be available any longer for download from Microsoft. RC is for Release Candidate, not beta so its nearly the released version. |
