Hardware gamma?

In the game there's an option for hardware gamma. There's a little line by it that says intensity. So what does hardware gamma and intensity mean?

By increasing gamma, you basically lighten up the screen, similar to using brightness on your monitor. If the game is too dark, and hard to see things, you might try turning it up some.
